Chandigarh education department invites sports bodies to reignite school grounds

1 2 3 Chandigarh: The department of education, UT Chandigarh, has issued an expression of interest (EOI) calling on recognised sports associations to help revive structured sport in government and aided schools across the city. The move seeks partnerships with associations affiliated to national sports bodies to provide coaching, equipment, and technical support in 18 different sports disciplines. The officials noted that despite Chandigarh's strong sporting tradition and substantial infrastructure, including large school grounds and courts, most facilities remain underutilised due to a lack of trained coaches. The EOI highlights that while sports have grown significantly in the city, government schools in particular suffer from a shortage of professional trainers, leading to missed opportunities for nurturing young talent. To address this issue, specific schools have been earmarked for sports such as athletics, lawn tennis, football, handball, fencing, and kabaddi. Associations are invited to support these disciplines by deploying qualified coaches, conducting scientific performance monitoring, and helping organise competitions. The department will retain oversight, ensuring integration with school curricula and proper maintenance of facilities.
