(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Former MIC president G Palanivel passed away at Kuala Lumpur Hospital this morning. Bernama reported MIC vice-president T Murugiah as saying that Palanivel, 76, died at 8am. Advertisement Palanivel, a former Cameron Highlands MP, joined MIC as an ordinary member in 1968. He took over the leadership of the party when long-serving president S Samy Vellu stepped down in 2010 after helming MIC for 31 years. The Penang-born Palanivel served as minister in the Prime Minister's Department from August 2011 to May 2013, and natural resources and environment minister from May 2013 to July 2015. He also held deputy ministerial positions in the rural development ministry (1999-2004), women, family and community development ministry (2004-2009), and plantation industries and commodities ministry (2009-2011). Apart from serving as Cameron Highlands MP from 2013 to 2018, he was also the Hulu Selangor MP from 1990 to 2008. G. Palanivel, who led MIC and served four terms as MP, dies in HKL at 76
KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — Former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel died today. He was 76. MIC vice-president Datuk T. Murugiah, when contacted by Bernama, confirmed that the former Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 8 am. Born on March 1, 1949, in Penang, Palanivel began his career as a research officer at the National Museum for the Bujang Valley Project in 1973, before joining the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as a senior journalist in April 1977. In 1984, he was appointed as the editor for domestic and economic news at the agency before being seconded as press secretary to then Works Minister, Tun S. Samy Vellu, from 1987 to 1990. He had been actively involved in politics through MIC since the early 1970s and contested in the general election for the first time in 1990. He won the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat in the 1990 General Election and served as the MP for four consecutive terms before losing the seat in 2008. Palanivel returned to Parliament in 2013 as Cameron Highlands MP. — Bernama
