The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Is All New, But No Matter Which Version You Pick, It's a Hybrid
These days, it seems like the Toyota RAV4 is on a mission to overtake its sedan sibling, the Corolla, for the title of best-selling passenger vehicle ever. It's long cemented itself as a staple of the lineip, selling nearly 500,000 units in the U.S. last year (and by one count passing the Ford F-150 as America's most-registered vehicle). And as of Tuesday evening, it's receiving a serious overhaul for the 2026 model year — one that may help push the RAV4 to even loftier sales heights. There's a lot to cover with the new RAV4, but the core change is one that Toyota has been teasing for a long time: the lineup consists of nothing but hybrids. Hybrid-electric vehicles have largely defined Toyota's approach to electrification thus far, with company executives consistently pledging their support to the gas-electric powertrain — and the new RAV4, which offers both conventional and plug-in hybrid powerplants, is the latest iteration of this promise. Toyota is offering the 2026 RAV4 in three design variants with a series of trim levels inside these categories. All of these versions are bolder-looking than the last model, improving on a historically soft-spoken design language. The base model is known as the Core Design and is offered in three trim levels (LE, XLE, and Limited), while the mid-range model is known as the Rugged Design, which only carries the Woodland trim. Topping the model lineup for the RAV4 lineup is the Sport Design variant, bringing along SE, XSE, and GR-Sport trim levels. That makes for eight different RAV4 models available for 2026. All new RAV4 models will be powered by a 2.5-liter inline-four that's part of Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid-electric system. AWD variants of the regular hybrid-electric RAV4 put down 236 hp, while the FWD versions run on 226 hp‚ both offering an increase in horsepower from the previous generation. (It's worth noting that this is the first time a RAV4 hybrid has been offered in a FWD configuration.) Opting for the plug-in hybrid-electric version, in turn, adds EV range capability, thanks to two electric motors and a high-capacity traction battery. It also has the pleasant effect of raising the power figure to an impressive 320 hp. All-electric range tops out at 50 miles for PHEV models; charging can be done through a fast-charging-capable CCS charging port on the Woodland and XSE trims, while GR-Sport and SE models are stuck with Level 2 charging. PHEV XSE and Woodland grades will be able to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. Core Design models are only available as traditional hybrids, while Rugged Design and Sport Design models can all be optioned with PHEV or HEV drivetrains. Towing capacity is divided not by battery size but by drivetrain; most AWD models will be capable of towing 3500 pounds, while FWD models (and the LE AWD version) can only haul 1500 pounds. Similarly, wheel sizes vary by trim level, starting at 17 inches and growing up to 20. Woodland Edition models receive a suspension raise of half an inch, all-terrain tires, and standard roof rails, to boot. The GR-Sport edition is an exciting addition for the 2026 model year, though it is more akin to the now-defunct TRD Camry than a true Gazoo Racing product like the GR Corolla. (You can read all about the 2026 RAV4 GR Sport in our separate story here.) The interior of the new RAV4 has also been greatly improved. Toyota has added a new 10.5-inch infotainment screen as standard, though a 12.9-inch touchscreen is available, and is launching a refreshed version of its proprietary multimedia system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and all trim levels of the RAV4 offer a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Six-speaker audio is standard, but an expected JBL collaboration is available on select trims, too. SofTex seating is the norm, with a variety of improved upholstery options on offer, including perforated Brin Naub microsuede. Pricing and production details have yet to be announced, but Toyota says you can expect the new RAV4 to arrive at dealers later this year. We expect the new RAV4 to only improve on its hotcake sales rates, especially when all RAV4 buyers will benefit from a more efficient hybrid electric drivetrain, an improved interior, and more power. It's a big day for Toyota, and we're happy to celebrate the continuation of this highly competent Might Also Like You Need a Torque Wrench in Your Toolbox Tested: Best Car Interior Cleaners The Man Who Signs Every Car
