Grammy Hall Of Fame Gala Expands Into Major Fundraiser

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA - MAY 16: John Mellencamp performs onstage during the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame ... More Gala at The Beverly Hilton on May 16, 2025 in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo byfor The Recording Academy) As NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) CEO Harvey Mason told me a few years ago, one of the biggest issues the organization behind the Grammy Awards needs to fix is making people aware they are active year-round. The Grammy Awards are just part of what NARAS does. Holding a gala in May with an awards worthy lineup of performers, including John Mellencamp, Jon Batiste, Conan Gray, Susanna Hoffs, Emmylou Harris with Daniel Lanois and many others, is one sure way to attract attention. The Grammy Hall of Fame Gala, celebrated a diverse selection of works – JAY-Z's Reasonable Doubt, Cat Stevens' Tea For The Tillerman, Santana's Supernatural, and classics from Big Star, Clara Ward, Eddie Floyd, Emmylou Harris, Fela Kuti & Afrika 70, Geeshie Wiley, Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine, J.D. Crowe & The New South, Linda Martell, and Luther Vandross – inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, as well as honored Batiste with the first annual Ray Charles Architect of Sound award and honored Republic Records, which is what brought out Mellencamp and Gray. The Grammy Hall of Fame was created in 1973 and now currently includes over 1100 records, from Steely Dan, Kraftwerk and the Grateful Dead to Cole Porter, Louis Armstrong and the Budapest String Quartet, but the gala is a new endeavor, begun recently. This year saw it expand in size and scope to the Beverly Hilton as a fundraiser for the Grammy Museum. Given the success of this year's event, the talent involved, and attention this one garnered, plans are already underway to continue the gala in 2026. Like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where artists are eligible 25 years after their debut effort, the Grammy Hall of Fame also has a 25-year waiting period for eligibility. One thing the Grammys have always done right is atone for past errors in judgement by presenting lifetime achievement awards and hall of fame honors to deserving records and artists overlooked the first time. So, yeah, as much as I love Steely Dan, if you felt Eminem deserved that Album of the Year, there is a damn good chance his work will be in the Grammy Hall of Fame sooner or later.

Billie Eilish's New Single Matches The One That Made Her A Star

Billie Eilish's 'Wildflower' ties 'Bad Guy' as her second-longest-charting song on the Hot 100, ... More hitting 49 weeks on the tally. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 02: (FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Billie Eilish performs onstage during the 67th GRAMMY Awards at Arena on February 02, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by) Billie Eilish's most recent album Hit Me Hard and Soft recently celebrated its first birthday. The singer-songwriter released her third full-length in May 2024, and it was immediately welcomed as both a commercial and critical success. As the album continues to overperform across the Billboard rankings, two of its most popular songs are still present on the Hot 100, the most important tally for individual tracks in the U.S. Thanks to one more stay on that list, Eilish's current single reaches a very special milestone. "Wildflower," the current focus track from Hit Me Hard and Soft, is still charting on the Hot 100. At the moment, it marks 49 weeks on Billboard's ranking of the most-consumed tracks in the country. As "Wildflower" reaches 49 frames on the Hot 100, it ties with "Bad Guy" as her second-longest-charting track of all time on the competitive tally. While both "Wildflower" and "Bad Guy" have spent 49 weeks apiece on the Hot 100, their chart journeys have been quite different. "Bad Guy" debuted in April 2019 and reached No. 1 by August, becoming Eilish's first – and so far, only – leader. "Wildflower," however, opened at what turned out to be its peak, debuting on the Hot 100 in June 2024. Despite its longevity, "Wildflower" has only ever climbed as high as No. 17. This week, "Wildflower" declines more than 10 spaces, dipping from No. 44 to No. 58 on the Hot 100. That's a relatively low position for a cut that's nearing a full year on the roster, and it's not even Eilish's highest-rising smash at the moment. "Birds of a Feather" remains the longest-charting tune in Eilish's catalog on the Hot 100. Last frame, it became her first one-year charter. Now, it has collected a total of 53 appearances somewhere on the list. Currently, "Birds of a Feather" drops from No. 12 to No. 17 after peaking at No. 2, where it became one of Eilish's most successful releases to date – and one of two to stall in the runner-up space, joining 'Therefore I Am.'

The Most Joyful Live Show In America Right Now Might Be Cory Henry's

Cory Henry at the 67th GRAMMY Awards held at the Arena on February 2, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Michael Buckner/Billboard via Getty Images) Cory Henry is clearly going through something—and it sounds amazing. After winning his first Grammy this year for his roots-gospel album, Church, the organist and singer, known for his work with Snarky Puppy and Vulfpeck, appears to be in communion with something bigger than the stage. Last night at The Miracle Theater in Inglewood, California, Henry presided over a three-and-a-half hour celebration of his Grammy win with a soul-food dinner party and performance that felt as much like a revival of the spirit as a record showcase. Henry says he wants to make it a regular community gathering. You set yourself a high bar when you open a show like this by priming the audience with Aretha's live Amazing Grace, the centerpiece of the best-selling church album of all time. But Henry isn't competing with the past or trying to recreate it. He's on his own path, paying homage to the greats who came before him—James Cleveland, Billy Preston (perhaps you spotted Henry playing in Saturday Night as a member of Preston's band), Stevie Wonder, Prince. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 02: (FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Cory Henry accepts award for Best Roots Gospel Album for "Curch" onstage during the 67th GRAMMY Awards Premiere Ceremony at Peacock Theater on February 02, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by) Henry grew up performing gospel at church in Brooklyn. He was playing the piano and Hammond B3 at age two, and was on the Apollo stage at six. And while his career put him on tour with Bruce Springsteen, The Roots, Boys II Men and others, he's often voiced frustration with the music industry writ large. Two years ago, I spotlighted Henry's social media posts about no longer wanting to tour for a living and being fed up with the pittance of returns for musicians from streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. 'It'll be amazing if musicians got deals with music companies like pro sport players do with shoe deals...' he wrote. I still don't see Air Henrys but Church feels like a take-back. In his Grammy acceptance speech, he was ecstatic: 'It's literally my life history on record. This is a testimony for me to follow God.' That's what last night at the Miracle felt like. I don't need to spell out what the message or the mood is on tracks like 'Praise God," 'I Get Joy," 'Joy Reprise," and 'Musicians Praise.' You already know. This is music built to lift up hands, spirits, heads and maybe even whole communities. In addition to oxtails and fried chicken at the pre-show dinner, there was an open-mike after-party next door after the show that went late into the night). Call it a block party, call it 'Shoutin Music' (another track on Church). Whatever you call it, it's not nostalgia and it might not even be performance. Henry is reclaiming purpose, reclaiming joy and reclaiming space for all the musicians who want more than algorithmic crumbs. That's what I love about Church and about the spirit of church Henry brought to Inglewood. It somehow doesn't feel like a product but rather like a proclamation. And last night, with dinner plates still warm and the Hammond ringing, that proclamation rang loud and clear. ALSO ON FORBES

Ed Sheeran's New Single Is Experiencing An Odd Chart Run

Ed Sheeran's "Old Phone" debuts at No. 25 on the Digital Song Sales chart, marking a slow start in ... More the U.S. and a quick fall from the Hot 100. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 04: (FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Ed Sheeran attends the 66th GRAMMY Awards at Arena on February 04, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by) Ed Sheeran typically scores a hit whenever he drops a new single in the United States and promotes it with all his might. The English singer-songwriter remains one of the most successful artists in the pop space over the past decade or two, and his discography is already filled with well-known tunes — more than most musicians manage across an entire career. Sheeran's current era is proving to be less successful than his past ones, and his most recent single is struggling on the Billboard rankings. Sheeran recently released "Old Phone" as the second single from his upcoming album Play. The tune dropped in early May and has not earned a stellar reception in the U.S. Last week, it opened on several Billboard tallies, and while it disappears from some this frame, it manages to debut on another — but only barely. This week, "Old Phone" enters the Digital Song Sales chart, narrowly finding space on the list of the top-selling tunes in the country. It lands at No. 25, in last place. Luminate reports that the track sold just 1,700 copies. Interestingly, "Old Phone" debuts on the Digital Song Sales chart a week after it reached other lists, such as the Hot 100. Typically, a new tune by a pop star starts with what may turn out to be its largest sales sum, as that's when fans are most excited to head to platforms like iTunes and Amazon to purchase the cut. "Old Phone" performed better last week in the U.S. than it did during its second frame when it comes to sales, as pure purchases dropped by 3.5%. The tally was busier last time around, which meant there wasn't room for Sheeran's latest. As "Old Phone" arrives on the Digital Song Sales chart, it concurrently falls away from the Hot 100. The single debuted at No. 89 last week, which may turn out to be its peak. After just one stay on the list of the most popular tunes in America, it has vanished. "Old Phone" may be gone from the Hot 100, but its predecessor is still present. "Azizam" dips to No. 54 in its sixth frame on the ranking. Radio is largely keeping that tune afloat, as it appears inside the top 10 on two of Billboard's pop radio lists and approaches that highest tier on another. It can also be found on the all-genre Radio Songs tally, as DJs are usually keen to keep Sheeran's music in rotation due to the large audience for his work.
