Delhi Tests Air Siren Day After India Strikes Islamabad, Lahore
Last Updated: Mock drill was conducted in Delhi today in the wake of heightened tensions with Pakistan on the borders. An emergency siren testing was conducted as part of a mock drill in the national capital on Friday in the wake of military tensions with Pakistan, officials said. Ahead of the testing, the Delhi government had issued a notice stating that the Directorate of Civil Defence would test air raid sirens that are installed at the Public Works Department Headquarters at ITO, and said that there is no need to panic. 'The testing will commence at 3.00 PM and be carried out for a period of 15-20 minutes. Accordingly, it is requested that adequate publicity may be made through social and electronic media so that general public are advised to stay calm and not to panic during the said exercise," the statement said. The drill began at 3 pm and was conducted for around 10 minutes. District Magistrate (Central) G Sudhakar had also urged residents not to panic and stay calm as the sirens are sounded. The mock drill was conducted a day after Indian military struck deep inside Pakistan in its capital city, Islamabad, Punjab province's largest city, Lahore, and Sialkot. India's action came in retaliation for the barrage of drone and missile attacks by Pakistan into Indian territory late last evening. All their projectiles were successfully shot down by Indian air defence systems — S-400 and Akash — except for one drone, which managed to hit the Jammu Civil Airport. Pakistan targeted their attacks in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Rajasthan, leading to the local authorities adhering to the standard SOPs and executing a complete blackout in the border districts. Delhi prepares for emergency, trials on air raid sirens to be held across 11 districts today
Amid rising tensions between Indian and Pakistan, all the district magistrates in Delhi have been directed to deploy air raid sirens, including manual and electrical, at important and critical locations and conduct trials on Friday. The 11 district administrations in Delhi will conduct the trials at different timings in the evening and check the response from the departments concerned. The development comes following reports of attacks in Jammu and along the international border via Pakistani drones, said officials. G Sudhakar, District Magistrate (DM) of Central Delhi, said that the Directorate of Civil Defence will be testing air raid sirens installed at the PWD headquarters at ITO. 'The testing will commence at 3 pm and be carried out for a period of 15-20 minutes,' Sudhakar said in a statement. The DM also advised the general public to stay calm and not to panic during the exercise. Another senior revenue district officer said that they have already installed air raid sirens at several locations, including Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport. Officials said the Delhi government has decided to procure 500 sirens to be installed across the city and train 1,800 Aapda Mitras (friends for disaster management) through an agency suggested by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). New Delhi district will conduct similar testing of air raid sirens at the NDMC Palika Kendra building in the evening between 6 pm and 7 pm, said an officer. The South West district, meanwhile, has installed manual and electrical sirens at BPCL, Bijwasan, Vegas Mall Dwarka, Uttam Nagar police station, Dwarka More Metro station, India Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka Sector 10, Dwarka Sector 21 Metro station, and Najafgarh SDM office. Further, the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), district, and state-level control rooms have been directed to monitor the ground situation 24 hours with backup communications. Delhi Services on Thursday evening also cancelled the leaves of all government officials and staff following the emergency situation. Officials said those who have already gone on leave or whose leave grants were approved and have been withdrawn, and those staff on leave have been asked to rejoin duty immediately.
