Govt withdraws Covid advisory, 3 days after issuing it

Vijayawada: The state govt has withdrawn its Covid-19 advisory just three days after issuing it. According to information, the director of public health and family welfare issued an advisory on May 24, warning against mass gatherings, including prayer meetings and public events, while also advising public to avoid crowded places. The order was based on increasing Covid cases in many states, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. Even though Andhra Pradesh has reported only a few cases, the advisory urged caution to prevent any possible outbreak, and asked district medical and health officers to restrict all social gatherings including prayers, social gatherings, parties, and functions. The advisory also asked to ensure that Covid protocols are followed in railway stations, bus stations, and airports. Elderly people above 60 years were advised to stay indoors, people were told to wear masks in all high-risk zones, and get themselves tested if they experienced any Covid symptoms. Health commissioner G Veerapandian has now asked the director of public health to withdraw the advisory, within three days after it was issued. He said a review was conducted by the special chief secretary with all heads of depts following clarifications sought by the district collectors with regard to the advisory issued on Saturday. "It is observed that around 257 cases have been reported across India since May 12. Around 95 cases were reported in Kerala, Tamil Nadu reported 66 cases, Maharashtra 55 cases, Karnataka 13 cases, Puducherry 10 cases, while Andhra Pradesh reported three cases. It is ascertained from the above states that there is no significant hospitalisation of the patients. The cases are mild in nature and advised for home isolation only," he explained. He further stated that there was no official communication or advisory from the Centre regarding imposition of any restrictions or regulations in view of Covid-19 at this point of time. "The director of medical education has also reported that there is no spike in fever cases in any hospital and only sporadic Covid cases are being reported. All HoDs have been directed to monitor the situation closely and ensure the availability of oxygen, testing kits, medicines, PPE kits, N95 masks, and isolation rooms and alert all staff to be prepared to tackle the situation as warranted. In view of the above, it is decided to withdraw the advisory. All DMHOs are instructed to keep monitoring the situation closely, report all cases promptly, take immediate action as per medical protocol in coordination with all concerned," Veerapandian said. Meanwhile, YSRCP alleged that the advisory was withdrawn only to facilitate TDP's Mahanadu.
