Lady Vols stay alive with 3-2 win over Nebraska

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – A trip to Oklahoma City is on the line for Tennessee softball after picking up a 3-2 win over Nebraska in game 2 of the Super Regional. Nebraska picked up the victory, 5-2, in game one. Karlyn Pickens pitched a complete game and picked up the win. She struck out 11 batters, allowing two runs on five hits. Pickens made history in the first inning, throwing the fastest pitch in NCAA history, clocking on at 79.4 mph. The junior broke her own previous record of 78.2 which she recorded earlier this season. Karen Weekly changed the lineup for today's elimination game. Safe to say it worked out early. Tennessee had its leadoff batter reach base in the first, as Gabby Leach was hit by a pitch. Ella Dodge, who usually hit in the bottom of the lineup, was in the clean up spot and hit a two-run shot over the right field wall to give Tennessee a 2-0 lead. It marked Dodge's first home run of the postseason and her sixth of the year. However, Nebraska tied things up in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back singles from Jordy Bahl and Samantha Bland put two runners on, and then Hannah Camenzind brought them both home on a single up the middle. Karlyn Pickens bounced back with a pair of strikeouts to leave Camenzind stranded on first and keep things even heading into the second. Laura Mealer sent a single up the middle with one out, but Gabby Leach grounded out into a double play to end the inning. Pickens had a strong showing in the second inning, striking out three Nebraska batters, including Jordy Bahl. Tennessee regained the lead in the third. Gabby Leach started things off with a walk, and then she advanced to second on a Sophia Nugent single. Leach slid over to third base on a fielder's choice and then scored on a McKenna Gibson sacrifice fly to give UT a 3-2 lead. Pickens pitched another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the third, picking up her sixth strikeout of the day. Alannah Leach reached second base in the top of the fifth, but back-to-back flyouts left her stranded. Pickens pitched back-to-back three up, three down innings in the fifth and the sixth to preserve the one-run lead. UP NEXT: Tennessee and Nebraska will battle for a spot in the College World Series tomorrow. First pitch time is set for 2 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
