Why cancelling Suits LA after one season is the best announcement in American TV history

American show Suits LA always faced the near-impossible legal burden of precedent — namely, Suits (the original), starring Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, and Meghan Markle. And unfortunately, this spinoff fails to meet the standard of proof required to justify its own existence. In fact, if television had a Supreme Court, Suits LA would be summarily dismissed for lack of merit, lack of charm, and lack of literally anything compelling. Honestly, the only thing more shocking than its cancellation after one season would've been if someone renewed it voluntarily. Ted Black (Stephen Amell), a former federal prosecutor with a traumatic past and some truly uninspired flashbacks to 2010, now runs a boutique entertainment law firm in LA with his friend Stuart Lane. There's a merger pending with a rival firm led by his ex (of course), and clients (many of them real-life actors) roll in with problems that sound more interesting than they are. There's office politics, unresolved tension, and a fair amount of posturing — none of which feels remotely compelling. Well, everyone looks fantastic. The wardrobe department deserves an Emmy for managing to make Stephen's jawline look even sharper. Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins brings a spark, managing to occasionally inject life into otherwise limp scenes. Her clashes with Rick (Bryan Greenberg) and moments with junior associate Alice Lee provide rare glimmers of watchability. There are also some attempts at witty repartee — the kind you'd expect in a Suits show — but they're more like dry coughs than zingers. Let's start with the obvious: it's not funny, smart, or fast-paced — the things that defined the original. The flashbacks to Ted's New York days feel like they were edited on Windows Movie Maker, and the mystery around his move is about as suspenseful as a parking ticket. Guest star cameos (including the late John Amos and Brian Baumgartner) feel like distractions from a script that knows it's running on empty. And worst of all? The banter. Suits ran on musical, sharp-tongued exchanges. Suits LA tries — oh, it tries — but every quip lands like a thud. Suits LA tries to repackage the original's magic in West Coast packaging but ends up delivering courtroom drama without the drama, cleverness without the clever, and charisma without, well, anything resembling charisma. The result is a show that's technically about lawyers, but mostly just about very good-looking people in very good-looking suits having very uninspired conversations. It's a spin-off that forgot to bring the spin — or the fun.

‘Suits LA' Canceled Ahead of Season One Finale

Suits LA is ending its run. Yes, already. NBC has canceled the spinoff series of the beloved USA Network courtroom dramedy. The first season will conclude with its forthcoming May 18 finale, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. More from The Hollywood Reporter How 'Suits LA' Lured Gabriel Macht Back to Playing Harvey Specter 'Suits LA' to See Rick Hoffman Return as Louis Litt TV Ratings: 'Suits LA' Premiere Shows Big Growth With Streaming The 13-episode NBC series brought back original stars Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter, David Costabile as Daniel Hardman and the remaining episodes are set to see Rick Hoffman return as Louis Litt. Suits LA, however, launched with a focus on a new set of lawyers, led by Stephen Amell as entertainment lawyer Ted. After the legal drama exploded on Netflix in 2023, creator Aaron Korsh decided to expand the Suits universe with the franchise's second spinoff, setting the story on the West Coast. The original Suits, which brought the world Meghan Markle, ran from 2011-2019 on USA Network. It did well for USA, but the show really exploded after heading to Netflix in a syndication (of sorts) deal. On Netflix, Suits became the undisputed show of summer 2023 — and really of 2023 as a whole. Suits was Nielsen's No. 1 streaming series for a record 12 straight weeks, passing Ozark. Suits was streamed for nearly 58 billion minutes in 2023. The show was also on Peacock during that time period, but almost all of the viewership came on Netflix. Suits LA did not share much in the resurgence of its source series. Netflix had an opportunity to purchase the spinoff show, but the streamer passed. NBC also canceled sitcoms Lopez vs. Lopez and Night Court on Friday — they ran for three seasons apiece — as well as The Irrational and Found. NBC will host its upfront on Monday at Radio City Music Hall, and the network is cleaning house for when the NBA returns to its airwaves this fall. Gabriel Macht talks 'Suits LA' return and Duchess Meghan's role in the show's resurgence

Gabriel Macht talks 'Suits LA' return and Duchess Meghan's role in the show's resurgence Show Caption Hide Caption 'Suits LA': Gabriel Macht takes these steps in becoming Harvey Specter How does Gabriel Macht become the character Harvey Specter? He explains his "Suits LA" reprisal to USA TODAY's Ralphie Aversa. NEW YORK ‒ Gabriel Macht is thrilled with the resurgence of the USA Network legal drama "Suits," which aired from 2011 to 2019. The actor talks about clips of the show going viral on social media. He marvels at how the series took off when it hit Netflix in 2023. He even mentions that "Suits" was one of the most illegally downloaded TV shows of its time, according to rankings from a website that publishes news on copyright and file sharing. And yes, the fact that his paralegal on the show was played by an actress then known as Meghan Markle, now Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, might have played a role, too. "I don't know the logistics; I don't know the numbers," Macht, 53, tells USA TODAY. "But possibly. I mean, she's quite known around the world these days, right?" Macht says "never in a million years" did he think he'd be fielding questions about the royal family because of a former colleague. Thankfully, for "Suits" fans, they didn't have to wait a million years to see him back as Harvey Specter. The actor reprises his role as the fast-talking lawyer on NBC's spinoff "Suits LA" (Sunday, 9 ET/PT). Macht says returning to the character, which he played in all 134 episodes of the original series, was like figuratively hopping back on a bike. "There's a couple different stages; one is putting the suit on," he explains. "You feel like, 'Oh, I'm back in it.' Another is, 'Let me get in touch with all the stuff that I'm not crazy about myself.' That's pretty easy. And then the third is learning the lines. Once you sort of absorb the double negatives and all the rhythms, then you're good to go." New coast, same Harvey Specter on 'Suits LA' The original series, set in New York, starred Macht and Patrick J. Adams, who played Mike Ross, a chronic underachiever with a photographic memory who never attended law school. Despite this, Specter is impressed with Ross and brings him on as an associate in his law firm. The new series shifts the action to Los Angeles. Macht was first seen in the March 16 episode, "Batman Returns." Through flashbacks, we learn of Specter's friendship with the lead of the new show, Ted Black (Stephen Amell). Over drinks at a bar, Specter insists that he is Batman to Ted's Robin. "I think it's probably the narcissistic element that Harvey's got, where he's gotta be the one and center," Macht says. "I don't think Harvey ever sees himself as a sidekick, whether it's Mike being Robin or Ted being Robin. (Harvey's) definitely not Robin." April 13's eighth episode, "Acapulco," continues a three-part story arc for Specter in the present world of "Suits LA." It's the second time he's reprised the role: He also appeared in the short-lived 2019 spinoff "Pearson," which centered on the law firm's co-founder Jessica Lourdes Pearson (Gina Torres). "There was so much banter in the original," he says of "Suits." "You get an audience in by making it light and witty. People like that interplay. And then you bring out slowly but surely their personal histories that have some darkness. And you punch them in the gut with that and then you make them feel like, 'Oh, I gotta care for this person.' I think 'Suits LA' has more of that." Where does Macht live? 'I'm a citizen of the world' Macht was born in the Bronx and lived in New York's Westchester county until he was 5 before relocating to Los Angeles. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, the actor bounced between the two coasts. He and his wife, Australian American actress Jacinda Barrett, share two kids. The actor is coy about his home base. And while he won't rule out a return to Hollywood, he says he's satisfied with his professional role: co-founder and creative director of Bear Fight Whiskey. Seth MacFarlane is also a founding investor. "Harvey likes whiskey and I like whiskey," he notes of his character, while clarifying that Specter's weapon of choice is Macallan scotch. "I'm able to create some of the storylines and the narratives and what the messaging is. What's your bear fight? Everyone has one." But when it comes to extending his stay in the "Suits" universe, there doesn't seem to be much conflict in Macht's mind. "I had a really wonderful time," he says of his role as a guest actor. "They all welcomed me. It was really sweet. Never say never, but I think they've got their legs."
