World University Games: 11 athletes from Alva's College selected
Mangaluru: As many as 11 athletes from Alva's Education Foundation's Sports Adoption Scheme, representing Mangalore University, were selected to represent India in the forthcoming World University Games 2025. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The event is scheduled to be held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, from July 16 to 27. With this, the total number of athletes from the foundation participating in the games over the years has risen to 32. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, M Mohan Alva, president of the foundation, said the selection was a matter of great pride for the institution and the state. The athletes were selected during the trials held at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar. In the men's category, the selected athletes are Gagan (5,000m run), Sachin (20km walk), Balakrishna (400m run), and Taufique N (decathlon). In the women's category, Deekshita (400m hurdles), Basanti Kumari (half marathon), Manju Yadav (steeplechase), Sindhusree (pole vault), Sakshi (javelin throw), Jyoti (half marathon), and Shalini (20km walk) secured their spots. All the selected athletes represent Mangalore University and trained under Alva's Sports Adoption Scheme. Each athlete will require a financial outlay of Rs 2.5 lakh to participate in the event. While Mangalore University has assured a contribution of Rs 75,000 per athlete, the remaining expenses are being borne by the foundation. Athletes from the Foundation participated in previous World University Games, with a total of 32 individuals selected, including this year. In the 2015 games held in Croatia, one athlete participated; in the 2017 games in Taiwan, two athletes participated; in the 2019 games in Italy, 10 athletes participated; and in the 2023 games in Chengdu, China, eight athletes took part.

3 held for kidnapping minor girl in Gurugram
Gurugram: The Gurugram police have arrested three accused, including a woman, for allegedly kidnapping a 10-year-old girl, police said. The minor girl was rescued within three hours of operation, police added on Thursday. The suspects were identified as Gagan and Sandeep, residents of Badarpur, Delhi, and Zahida, a resident of Kiranki, located in Sohna block of Gurugram. According to the police, on Wednesday, a man filed a complaint at the Sohna Sadar police station regarding the kidnapping of his daughter. Upon receiving this complaint, a case was registered under the relevant sections in Sadar police station in Sohna, Gurugram. Police took prompt action in the matter and recovered the kidnapped girl safely from Badarpur within three hours and nabbed the kidnapper. During police questioning, it was found that the accused Gagan kidnapped the girl with an intention of getting the victim married to his younger brother, police said. Apart from this, the crime branch team of the Manesar police have also arrested three accused with illegal weapons. According to the police, the accused were wanted in the case of kidnapping and attempting to murder a person from Jhajjar with the intention of killing him. The accused were identified as Nitin, Arjun, and Devender, all residents of Jhajjar district in Haryana. The police team has recovered a pistol and four live cartridges from the possession of the accused. A case was registered against them under the relevant sections of the Arms Act at Gurugram's Sector-10 police station, police said.

Neil Nitin Mukesh on preparing for ‘Hai Junoon': ‘Music runs in my blood'
Streaming giant Jio Hotstar is all set to premiere the musical drama series Hai Junoon! Dream. Dare. Dominate on its platform on May 16. Directed by Abhishek Sharma, the series stars Jacqueline Fernandez and Neil Nitin Mukesh in the lead. Centred around themes of passion, individuality and friendship, the series revolves around a musical competition in which two arch rivals — Misfits and Supersonics — collide. Neil plays the role of Gagan, who, according to a press release by the makers, 'serves as the soul of Supersonics and embodies music itself, channeling rhythm, emotion, and raw intensity.' Speaking about preparing for the role, Neil, son of playback singer Nitin Mukesh and grandson of late veteran singer Mukesh, said, 'Music runs in my blood. When I was young, I had the privilege of training under my grandfather's Guruji. That passion for music never left me, even after I chose acting as my profession. So, when I was offered the role of a pianist, I immediately jumped at it. It's the first time I'm playing a character so closely aligned with who I am, at least when it comes to passion.' Neil added that he closely worked with director Abhishek to develop Gagan's style as well as his emotional arc. 'I also drew inspiration from a number of artists, including my father, Nitin Mukesh, and other legendary singers,' he added. Interestingly, 'Hai Junoon' was the title of a song in Neil's 2009 film, New York, co-starring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Irrfan Khan. The cast of Hai Junoon! Dream. Dare.
