Samsung Galaxy G Fold may not go on sale in the US — what we know

We've all heard about the Samsung Galaxy G Fold, the new tri-fold phone, that's coming later this year. Details on the phone itself have been a little scarce, especially in terms of release details. But a new leak claims to shed some light on when the phone will arrive — and where. According to Yogesh Brar, the Galaxy G Fold will launch in Q3 of this year, but will only be available in two markets, Like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold SE, the tri-fold will apparently only be available in South Korea and China. On top of that, the leaker claims that the phone will be available in "limited quantities" with a price tag between $3,000 and $3,500. It's not clear how limited the numbers will be, sadly. Obviously that is not the news a lot of people wanted to hear. The fact the phone is expensive isn't a huge surprise — foldables are already pricey without the extra hinge. But there will be plenty of people upset at the fact they're not able to pick one of these new phones up in the U.S. or Europe. Of course the Galaxy G Fold is a very niche device that probably isn't going to sell in huge numbers anyway. The price tag alone will be enough to put all but the most dedicated (or wealthy) foldable fans off the phone altogether. But if the release of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is anything to go by, fans may just have to be a little more patient. The Z Fold SE never made it out of Asia, not officially anyway, but it is rumored to be the basis of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. So a lot of the same benefits coming to the Special Edition, like the 200MP camera and lightweight titanium hingeplate, will be available on the flagship model. Almost as though Samsung was using the Special Edition model to see if it could offer those things, without risking things going wrong on the flagship release. I'm not saying that the Z Fold 8 will magically have a tri-fold design. But it's possible that Samsung wants to use the Galaxy G Fold as a trial run before offering a wider release of tri-fold phones. Both to ensure the design is sound, and up to scrutiny, and to see how well they'll sell. That's just speculation, but it would certainly help avoid any embarrassing launches — like we saw with the original Galaxy Fold. But we'll have to wait and see what Samsung actually does, and whether the limited G Fold release actually goes smoothly or not.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 dimensions leak — this really could be the world's thinnest foldable

The Galaxy Z Fold 7's official announcement is on the horizon, but a new leak has seemingly unveiled the full dimensions for what could be one of the next best foldables early. The leak comes from known tipster IceUniverse, who shared a table on X that compares the upcoming phone with other recent Samsung foldables. The table states the Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 158.4 x 143.1 x 3.9mm when open. Comparing this with the other phones' measurements, there's not much of a difference between the Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition which was exclusive to Korea and China. But on the brighter side, it looks like it'll be much wider than the original Galaxy Z Fold 6, giving users more screen space. However, while the display might not be much bigger than previous models, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 could be thinner. The table claims that the phone will only be 3.9mm thick when unfolded, thinner than even the Z Fold Special Edition. We've seen this same detail from IceUniverse in the past, and not all leakers agree, so it's worth taking this with a grain of salt. However, if it is true, then Samsung's next foldable would be the thinnest foldable phone in the world when it releases. For reference, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is around 5.6mm thick, while the Oppo Find N5, which is the current thinnest foldable, measures 4.21mm when unfolded. This isn't the only recent rumor we've had from IceUniverse about the new phone, as it appears Samsung is also reducing the size of the bezels. According to a second post, Samsung has reduced the bezels on the inner display down to 1.0mm compared to the 1.9mm seen on the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Meanwhile, the outer screen bezel is stated to only be 1.2mm. While the thinness of the phone is impressive (if the rumors are accurate), it appears there might be a pretty unfortunate drawback. According to several rumors, Samsung will not be changing the battery for the Z Fold 7, keeping the same 4,400 mAh battery seen in the prior device. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Not only that, we've also heard that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will again feature 25W wired charging, which is the same as previous generations and lower than the Galaxy S25 Ultra's 45W. However, both of the new foldables will allow for 25W wireless charging, which is a needed improvement. On the plus side, we recently saw a list of some of the major changes coming with the Z Fold 7, including a 200MP main camera and the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 could also feature an upgraded under-display camera on the inner display and a bigger vapor chamber to help control heat. For now, we'll have to wait until Samsung unveils the Galaxy Z Fold 7 officially to see how thin it really is. Currently, it seems that the announcement will happen at a Galaxy Unpacked event in July. Until then, we'll keep you updated on all the Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 rumors as we see them, as well as our initial impressions of the device when we see it.

Samsung could reinvent the S Pen for its next foldable phone

Samsung is reportedly making a major stylus input change for its next book-style foldable device as it moves forward in pursuit of slimmer phones. According to a report from ET News, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will switch the stylus input to a format similar to that of the Apple Pencil. Citing industry sources, the Korean outlet mentions that Samsung has decided to remove the digitizer element from the upcoming phone's display assembly. The digitizer is a pressure-sensitive layer that converts the physical input from a stylus and converts those strokes into digital information. Removing the digitizer layer has reportedly allowed Samsung to shave 0.6 millimeters from the phone's cross section. The report mentions that the thickness profile of Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be under 10 millimetres, and that it has been modeled after the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. The latter is slimmer than the current-gen Galaxy Z Fold 6, and packs a larger inner display. For the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, the company is eyeing a slightly bigger 8-inch inner foldable screen, but one without a digitizer element to trim the phone's waistline. So, how is a stylus going to factor in the equation without a digitizer? Samsung is reimagining the entire stylus stack, it seems, and will reportedly adopt the active electrostatic (AES) system. Instead of a digitizer layer, the AES tech requires specialized sensors integrated within the display to produce an electrostatic grid. These grids interact with the stylus, which comes fitted with its own transmitting unit, among other innards. Here is Wacom's explanation of the interaction process for an AES stylus: 'One sensor grid and the pen act as the transmitting unit that generates an electrical field; the other grids act as receiving units. The pen's position is identified based on differences in the charge amount detected on each sensor grid receiving unit.' This approach reduces input latency to milliseconds, without sacrificing input accuracy or niceties such as pressure sensitivity. On the flip side, the stylus gets heavier. That's not necessarily a bad sign, as the likes of Apple Pencil work just fine for basic note-taking as well as advanced sketching. It has found widespread acceptance in the creative community that uses an iPad on a daily basis. The only major hassle is that the stylus will have to be charged on a regular basis to top up the battery inside. How Samsung manages that, remains a mystery. Apple's stylus options rely either on magnetic charging, or use a wired USB-C format to juice up the battery pack fitted inside their cylindrical chassis. So far, Samsung has sold a custom stylus under the 'Fold Edition' label for the Galaxy Z Fold series phones, which is thicker and more rounded than the one it offers with the Galaxy S series, or the erstwhile Galaxy Note series phones. It would be interesting to see what design language (and pricing model) Samsung implements for its new foldable-friendly stylus. And yeah, it's quite likely that a price hike is in the pipeline.

Samsung's ultra-thin Galaxy S25 Edge might get a monster camera

This year, thin is in, for the smartphone industry. Oppo will soon drop the world's thinnest foldable phone in the market. Apple's rumored iPhone 17 Air continues to be a topic of hot speculation. Samsung, on the other hand, has already given a live demonstration of its Galaxy S25 Edge. Thankfully, it seems there won't be as many compromises as we initially expected for such a thin phone. According to a fresh leak that touts a 'confirmed' status for the hardware details, the sleek phone will come armed with a 200-megapixel rear camera. That's quite a fascinating choice, as camera sensors with such a high-megapixel count are usually reserved for the top-tier Galaxy S Ultra series phones. But more than the value debate, it's also quite an ambitious feat of engineering to fit a 200-megapixel sensor on the Galaxy S25 Edge. It won't be entirely shocking, however. A few months ago, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, its thinnest foldable phone yet. Despite its slimmer profile, the phone upgraded the main camera to a 200-megapixel sensor. It's also worth noting that, unlike the flat looks of the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which also offers a 200-megapixel camera, there is a camera island bump on the Galaxy S25 Edge. Moreover, the camera lenses protrude atop that hump, so there's that accommodation. Oppo has also managed to fit a triple-rear camera array on its upcoming Find N5, complete with a periscope-style folded lens zoom system, despite the phone measuring barely over four millimeters in thickness when unfolded. Samsung hasn't shared any details about the upcoming phone, except for a hardware showcase at its Unpacked event. As per the latest leak, the Galaxy S25 Edge will employ an armor aluminum frame, while the display will be protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The screen is said to serve Samsung's adaptive refresh rate tech, adjusting its fluidity between 1-120Hz for a smooth and energy-efficient visual experience. A vapor chamber kit is reportedly fitted inside to manage heat dissipation, while battery top-up duties will be handled by 25W wired charging. Given the phone's metallic looks and its slim side profile, it doesn't appear that wireless charging will be part of the package. But Oppo has managed to deliver 50W wireless charging on the upcoming Find N5 foldable phone, so we just might get a pleasant surprise from Samsung later this year. On a side note, the Galaxy S25 Edge is not a value-centric or flagship phone that will set the specifications sheet on fire. Instead, it's more like a showcase for smartphone innovation and engineering acumen. Needless to say, temper your expectations fittingly.
