Slowdive at In the Meadows review: Forget Oasis, this sonic supernova is the perfect 1990s comeback
Slowdive In the Meadows, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin ★★★★★ Band reunions are in the headlines again ahead of this summer's return of Oasis – coming to a stadium near you at a premium price. But the Gallagher brothers will be doing well to have a comeback one-fifth as glorious as that of Slowdive , the early 1990s alternative pop underdogs whose reunion several years ago has seen them break out of their chrysalis and spread their wings gloriously. That victory lap ticks off its latest milestone at the In The Meadows festival in Dublin, where their headlining slot on the tented second stage is a wondrous serving of balmy space-pop. Back in the 1990s, the band – from the Thames Valley outside London – were derided by the then-mighty rock press for their lack of rock'n'roll swagger and all-round sense of artful dreaminess. Their unassuming, psychedelic music saw them lumped alongside Dublin's My Bloody Valentine as pioneers of a sound called 'shoegaze' – sniffed at in the moment yet hugely influential over the decades. Slowdive performed at the In The Meadows festival, at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin, at the weekend. Amidst the occasional rain shower and gathering twilight, it is a palate-clearing panacea, beginning with sonic supernova Shanty from their 2023 album, Everything Is Alive. Their voices have a mutually complementary, hazy quality and are well paired with the vast weather fronts of guitar, particularly on 1990s tracks such as Catch the Breeze and Souvlaki Space Station. Accompanied by a gently blistering light show, their set is beautifully overwhelming. Surreal, too, if you were that one audience member up front trying to get lost in the band's haunting soundscapes whilst also following, in real-time, the Cork-Limerick penalty shoot-out in the Munster Hurling Final. They finish with the gorgeous assault of Golden Hair – originally by lost Pink Floyd frontman Syd Barrett and accompanied by a video projection of his scowling, puzzled face. But there is another surprise as the music rises to an ear-splitting sob and the face of Carry On star Sid James fills the screen – a glint of humour mixed with the emotion-melting spectacle.

I witnessed the birth of Oasis first-hand. There was method in their madness
It's hard to think about the Nineties without Oasis. Not only were they the most successful British group of the decade, the Gallagher brothers came to define the so-called 'lad culture' of those high times. As standard bearers of a genuine working-class revolution, they were caricatured as the drinking, drugging, brawling 'supayobs' – but Oasis were far smarter, and artier, than they were letting on. They combined the majestic power of the Sex Pistols and the melodic nous of the Beatles to create their own 'Sex Beatles', just like Nirvana was doing. Yet, unlike Kurt Cobain, they were more about redemption than nihilistic self-destruction. They were renegade outsiders who believed in the power of rock'n'roll as a means of escape; their life-affirming songs soundtracked a youthful optimism for better times. I got to know a pre-Oasis Noel Gallagher on the Manchester band scene whilst attending gigs in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He seemed to be at every gig, the Haçienda or the all-night raves in squatted flats in the then-bohemian wasteland of Hulme. He already had an in-depth knowledge of bands and music history, and was as passionate about the classics as great lost Manchester bands such as World Of Twist or Yargo. Soon after, when he started roadying for the Inspiral Carpets, I would see him at their gigs or at the band's office at New Mount Street, the hub of the Eighties Manchester music scene. When he first formed Oasis in 1991, he gave me demos – which I still have – including one of the band's very first, which he handed me on Whitworth Street near his then-flat in Manchester city centre. It was a demo full of hope – of a band straining against a national music scene that had decided Manchester was over. Early Oasis rehearsed next door to my band in the Boardwalk rehearsal rooms around the corner from the Haçienda – the heart and soul of the Manchester music scene. Most of these bands would rehearse a couple of times a week, but Oasis seemed to be in there every day, grafting and plotting in the dusty damp of the cellar rooms. They were in there so much that they had even decorated their room, painting the brick walls white, adding a small pop-art Union Jack painting and two Beatles posters. These were the psychedelic April 1967 photoshoot with American photographer Richard Avedon, and the shot of the Fabs on the steps of Brian Epstein's London flat on the day of the launch party for Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. There was method in the madness. One of the smartest people I've met in bands, Noel always knew what he was doing. The three years on the road around the world with the Inspiral Carpets had been a crash course in how bands worked. He understood the dynamics and the graft as he sound-checked all the Inspiral Carpets' instruments, and had even tried out to be the band's singer when Stephen Holt, their original vocalist, had left. He also spent hours in the office on the phone or looking after the T-shirts. After Inspiral Carpets rejected his audition as frontman, he entered 1993 determined to make it with his own band. It wasn't easy – in the early days the band were overlooked despite his connections and drive. London bands like Suede were all over the music press, and it felt like Manchester bands were out of fashion. A few years later Noel said he felt like 'the last one of my generation to make it'. In that first year, it seemed like Oasis was a hobby built around Noel, with a quiet, 20-year-old Liam in tow. But Liam had rock-star looks and a wild self-belief. And both, growing up sharing a cramped bedroom on a council estate in Burnage, were united by the desire to escape the drudgery of life, the shadow of their errant, difficult father and their then-broken city. In fact it was Liam who had initially found a local band who made a great racket but needed a singer with star power. After coaxing Noel to join, they knew they had something powerful. The brother's dynamic was fascinating: Noel would write and Liam would deliver his brother's lyrics in one or two perfect takes, just minutes after learning them. It was this innate understanding of his brother's emotions that contrasted so dramatically with the pair's many fall-outs. The brothers' psychodrama was described perfectly in 1997 by an 18-year-old Pete Doherty: 'I subscribe to the Umberto Eco view that Noel Gallagher's a poet and Liam's a town crier.' Still reeling from the effects of the post-industrial meltdown, late Eighties Manchester was far removed from what it is today. The city's famous two Sex Pistols gigs in 1976 had sparked a post-punk revolution of the 'Manchester kids with the best record collections', as Tony Wilson once quipped, from the Buzzcocks, Factory Records, and the Haçienda to Joy Division, the Smiths, The Stone Roses, and the Happy Mondays. The young Oasis became the final chapter in the city's transformation.

LIAM Gallagher has hit back at fans who raised concerns about his vocal health ahead of the Oasis reunion gigs - telling one to 'shut up'. The former feuding brothers have now put their differences aside as they get ready for the tour of the decade which kicks off next month. Oasis star Noel Gallagher's Bentley goes on sale for €1.4 million
Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher's red 1997 Bentley Turbo R has gone on sale priced at £1.2 million (€1.4 million). The four-door saloon car listed on Auto Trader was previously owned by the 58-year-old, despite the fact he cannot drive, once telling Zoe Ball on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show that he gave up learning after being mobbed by children when he was told to park close to a school for a lesson. Advertisement Speaking about the sale, Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader, said: 'Cars listed by music legends don't come around very often, and Noel Gallagher's Bentley Turbo R is certainly one for the Auto Trader history books. The Gallagher brothers are to reunite for an Oasis tour this year (Zak Hussein/PA) 'With over 80 million visits to Auto Trader every month, we expect this rock 'n' roll ride to strike a chord with music lovers and car collectors alike.' The car also has the number plate 'OASI6 2', in reference to his Britpop band, who will reunite to play a run of gigs this year in the UK and Ireland, featuring stops at Manchester's Heaton Park, London's Wembley Stadium, and Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, throughout July, August and September. Despite not being able to drive, Gallagher was ordered to pay a court £1,000 and was handed six penalty points in April 2023, for failing to tell police who was driving his Range Rover, when it was clocked speeding at 41mph on a 30mph stretch of the A40 in Edgware Road, West London. Advertisement Speaking about his driving lesson in the 1990s, Gallagher told Ball in 2023: 'I have had one driving lesson in the 90s and I was driving round a housing estate in Slough and she (the instructor) said to me, 'if you just indicate and pull over here' then I pulled over. 'She got out the car she said, 'I'll be back in a minute', she came out with her mum, she drove me to her house. 'Then the local comprehensive bell went and they all came out. 'This is at the height of Oasis-mania and I was like, 'never, never again'.' Liam picks up the gong, and thanks everyone except Noel. He later says this was misinterpreted as a dig. 2011 - Liam tries to sue Noel after he claims in the interview they cancelled their V Festival performance due to Liam being hungover. Liam disputed it said the comment "questioned my professionalism". He later apologised and the lawsuit was dropped. 2011 - Noel admits regrets at quitting before the Paris gig, telling Absolute Radio and admits if he did "we may never have split up." 2011 - 2014 - Liam and the other bandmates continue under new name, Beady Eye, while Noel forms new band, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. 2015 - After years of jabs online, especially through media and Twitter, Liam teases he's buried the hatchet with Noel by sharing an All Areas pass from a High Flying Birds gig. However, the fight would recommence two months later after Noel publicly dismissed suggestion Oasis would reunite for Glastonbury 2016. 2017 - Liam performs at Manchester's One Love concert after the bombing at Ariana Grande's show, with Don't Look Back In Anger becoming a unifying anthem for the incident. He then slams Noel for not attending. Noel later tells Sunday Times: "Young music fan were slaughtered, and he, twice, takes it somewhere to be about him. He needs to see somebody.' 2018 - Liam suggests a reunion for the 2018 World Cup on Twitter, writing: 'let's get the big O back together and stop f***ing about the drinks are on me'. When it fell on deaf ears, he added: "I'll take that as a NO then." 2019 - Noel speaks out after Liam sends 'threatening messages' to Anais after a comment made about then wife Sara McDonald. Liam later apologises publicly to Anais. 2020 - Liam urges Noel to reunite for a one-off charity gig. 'They said they thought he would be receptive, so she then asked Liam to reach out to his brother to lend support. 'Liam's always wanted Oasis back together so he got in touch.' The source said: 'It was all very slow-going behind the scenes to get the brothers talking again. 'Anais spending so much time with her dad allowed her to realise how much he missed his brother, despite the jibes they both made. 'It enabled her to plant the idea of a reconciliation on both sides. Thanks to her close relationship with Liam, she was able to call him. 'She worked hard to make sure they didn't look back in anger, if you like. 'Once Liam called Noel, the rest was left up to them.' The Gallagher brothers announced the big Oasis reunion in August last year, which sent fans into meltdown trying to get a tickets.
