How social media reacted to UNC beating Oklahoma, advancing to Super Regionals
How social media reacted to UNC beating Oklahoma, advancing to Super Regionals Social media was extremely happy for the UNC baseball team after Monday's dominant victory. With their 14-4 drubbing of Oklahoma in Monday's Chapel Hill Regional winner-take-all game, the North Carolina Tar Heels (45-12) will host a Super Regional for the second-consecutive season – this time, against the 4-time College World Series champion Arizona Wildcats. With its victory over the Sooners, UNC also advances to the Super Regionals by beating an SEC team – in an elimination game – for the second straight year. North Carolina began its run through the Chapel Hill Regional with a closer-than-expected, 4-0 win over Holy Cross on Friday. The Diamond Heels won their first of two games against the Sooners on Saturday, lost a 9-5 rematch on Sunday, then finished their job on Monday. UNC started Monday's scoring party with a 2-run, first-inning double from first baseman Hunter Stokely, then added an insurance run thanks to Alex Madera's single. After giving up two runs in the second inning, North Carolina responded with a 4-spot in the third. It wouldn't be a Chapel Hill Regional unless Gavin Gallaher takes over, with the Diamond Heels' star third baseman saving his best postseason performance for Monday afternoon. Gallaher recorded four hits in six at-bats against Oklahoma pitching, including two home runs and four RBIs, while scoring four times. North Carolina has not made consecutive CWS appearances since 2006-2009, when it finished as the '06 and '07 runner-ups. Now, UNC is two victories away from a second-straight trip. As you can imagine, social media was buzzing after Monday's victory. Check out some of the reactions from across the college baseball world below: The Diamond Heels celebrate It Just Means the ACC! UNC star infielder named best player after Chapel Hill Regional
UNC star infielder named best player after Chapel Hill Regional Is Gavin Gallaher the next UNC baseball legend? The North Carolina Tar Heels finally pieced together another complete game on the baseball diamond, dominating Oklahoma on Monday, 14-4, to win the Chapel Hill Regional and advance to the Super Regionals this coming weekend. UNC (45-13), which won three of its four games in the Chapel Hill Regional, will face the Arizona Wildcats for a spot in the College World Series. Just like 2024, when the Diamond Heels advanced to the Super Regionals, there was a constant force behind this year's Regional run: third baseman Gavin Gallaher. When North Carolina needed a base hit, home run, a runner driven in or virtually anything offensively, its star sophomore at the hot corner delivered. Gallaher finished this year's Chapel Hill Regional hitting an unconscious 13-of-18 (.722 batting average), which included three home runs and 10 RBIs. Gallaher saved his best performance for last in Monday's winner-take-all game, hitting 4-for-6 with four RBIs, two home runs and four runs scored. It should come as no surprise to anyone, Sooners fans included, that Gallaher earned Most Outstanding Player honors. Gallaher rose to prominence as a clutch freshman during last season's Chapel Hill Regional, blasting a walk-off grand slam against Long Island University during the opener. UNC trailed during the ninth inning of that game and, saving his team from embarrassment, Gallaher blasted a no-doubt, bases-loaded grand slam that send Boshamer Stadium into a frenzy. The Diamond Heels will need every bit of Gallaher's offense during the Chapel Hill Super Regional, which will start Friday, June 6 against Arizona at a time TBD. UNC punches ticket to Super Regionals with win over Oklahoma
UNC punches ticket to Super Regionals with win over Oklahoma The UNC baseball program is headed to the Super Regionals. After losing on Sunday night in a championship matchup against Oklahoma, the Tar Heels faced a do-or-die game on Monday afternoon. The rematch between the Sooners and Tar Heels was everything a North Carolina fan wanted, with the Diamond Heels taking the win 14-4 in dominant fashion. After pitching ace Jake Knapp and starters Jason DeCaro and Aidan Haugh, Scott Forbes started freshman Ryan Lynch on the mound, who had seen one start previously all season. Lynch threw 5.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts. He threw 82 pitches, the most he had all season in a single game. Walker McDuffie closed out the game as he also does, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits with seven strikeouts. The pitching performance between Lynch and McDuffie played a mighty role in this win as both teams were forced to rely on a pitcher who wasn't a normal starter. The Sooners started Reid Hensley and ended the game having played seven different pitchers on the mound. However, it wasn't all pitching; Scott Forbes' lineup also put up 14 runs, led by the man himself, Gavin Gallaher. Gallaher went 4-for-6 at the plate with four runs, two home runs, and four RBIs. He is now batting .323 on the season, one of the best on the team. He had a dynamic weekend and is a large part of UNC's success this weekend. On top of Gallaher on Monday afternoon, Jackson Van De Brake went 3-for-6 with three runs, a home run, and two RBIs as the captain got it going. Only two batters went hitless in the game, and only two batters failed to knock in at least one RBI against Oklahoma. The Tar Heels will advance to the super regionals and, as the No. 5 seed in the nation, will host Arizona in what will now be the Chapel Hill Super Regional next weekend.
