Rising star Gambu is ready to shake up the hip-hop scene
Port Shepstone-born rapper Siyabonga Brightman Memela, known to fans as Gambu, is carving out a powerful space in Mzansi's ever-evolving hip-hop scene and he's just getting started.
Hailing from KwaDweshula in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, Gambu is more than just another rapper with a mic and a dream. With a lyrical style packed with raw energy, sharp wordplay and unmistakable African rhythms, he's quickly become a voice for those who crave authenticity in the game.
Blending storytelling with social commentary, Gambu's music hits differently. 'I speak my truth and reflect my community. That's what keeps my sound grounded and real,' he says.
Back in 2019, Gambu made serious waves when he took top honours in a hip-hop competition hosted by the Umzumbe Municipality — a big moment that confirmed what his fans already knew: he's a serious force to be reckoned with. His standout performance in the KZN Cypher also earned him props from some of the province's most respected lyrical talents.
In the studio, Gambu has teamed up with a range of heavy hitters, including Maraza, Plan-B Fakumoya, Aubrey Qwane, X-Wise Beats, ZE2 and Young2unn Beats showcasing his versatility and ability to thrive across different styles and sounds.
With two solid EPs under his belt — Ingqalabutho (2016) and Umongo (2021) — Gambu has already shown remarkable growth, both sonically and lyrically. Now, with his much anticipated debut album on the way, fans can expect even more fire from this rising star.
