Nagpur: The civic body's abject failure to act decisively on illegal commercial activities inside residential premises led to Saturday's deadly fire in Mahal, which killed two and left two others injured. Sources said the flat where the blaze erupted was long used as an illegal godown to stock fireworks and electrical material. Despite repeated complaints by residents and several notices by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), no concrete steps were taken to remove the dangerous material. The flat owner, Girish Khatri, who died in the fire, was warned multiple times by civic officials but continued to ignore the orders. Assistant commissioner of Gandhibagh zone, Ganesh Rathod, confirmed that NMC issued multiple notices and even levied a Rs10,000 fine on Khatri in February. "We also imposed a daily penalty of Rs100 until the fine was paid. But he didn't comply and instead moved court," Rathod said. The fire, which broke out on the first floor of a G+4 building, led to panic as fireworks began exploding. Fire tenders had to park on the main road and manually carry hoses into the narrow lane where the building stood. "Fortunately, the building was not too deep inside the lane. Had it been located further down the lane, the consequences could have been far worse," a fire department official said. Fire officials then, too, faced immense difficulty accessing the site. The Mahal fire has reignited concerns over the unchecked commercialization of residential properties and the NMC's repeated failure to act with urgency, even after being warned. With many such ticking time bombs in the city's crowded commercial zones, Saturday's tragedy is a chilling reminder of the consequences of civic inaction. Man who promised to ‘make it rain money' kidnapped by his victims for ransom of Rs 45 Lakh, rescued
1 2 3 4 Nashik: A man from Chalisgaon in Jalgaon district, who, after promising two Mumbai residents that he could make it rain money with a puja, took Rs 11 lakh from them, was kidnapped by his victims. The kidnappers even sought Rs 45 lakh as ransom The Chalisgaon man was eventually rescued by the Jalgaon police from a jungle near Manmad on Friday. The Jalgaon police said Ganesh Rathod, a resident of Waghle in Chalisgaon taluka, was kidnapped from his hometown by some unidentified people on April 30. His son, who registered a complaint with the police, said that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs 45 lakh for Ganesh Rathod's release. Police said the kidnappers also sent a video to Ganesh Rathod's son, in which they were seen beating Ganesh. Taking serious note of the situation, Jalgaon SP Maheswar Reddy guided the local crime branch (LCB) officials to detect the case at the earliest and rescue the victim. During the investigation, police identified Jayesh Shinde and Shravan Bhagore from Nandgaon, Nashik, as potential suspects in the abduction case. Upon tracing their location, they were found in the Nandgaon area. After the LCB personnel reached Nashik, they received a tip that the suspects were riding a bike towards the Manmad railway station. The investigating team soon reached Manmad, and after spotting the suspects, the team started following them. The LCB team chased them for over 5km and then detained them. The suspects told police that they had kidnapped Rathod on the behest of their two friends and sent the video to Ganesh's son to demand Rs 45 lakh. The suspects said they beat up Ganesh Rathod, tied him up, and abandoned him in a forest area at Vinchur Lasalgaon. The victim was found tied and injured in the forest on Friday. Police said Ganesh Rathod had taken Rs 11 lakh from two people from Mumbai, promising that he could make them a lot of money through a ritual. When his victims realised they had been conned by Ganesh Rathod, they decided to kidnap him for a ransom. The Chalisgaon taluka police are investigating the case.
