West Bengal BJP MP and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata Saturday after complaining of abdominal pain. Gangopadhyay, 63, is being treated in the intensive care unit for acute pancreatitis with gastrointestinal sepsis. A Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital official stated that the MP was admitted after he experienced slight discomfort. Investigations are ongoing to evaluate his condition and a team of doctors is closely monitoring him, said the official. 'Member of Parliament and former Calcutta High Court judge Mr Abhijit Gangopadhyay, 63, got admitted at Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital on Saturday, with complaints of vomiting, abdominal pain, and abdominal distension. Investigations have indicated acute pancreatitis with gastrointestinal sepsis. Currently, Mr Gangopadhyay remains under close observation in the ICU. He is stable but critically ill and under continuous monitoring. A multidisciplinary medical board, comprising internal medicine and critical care specialist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist and GI surgeon, has been formed to ensure comprehensive and coordinated management of his condition,' read a statement issued by Rupak Barua, managing director and CEO Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital. Gangopadhyay resigned as Calcutta High Court judge in March last year and joined the BJP later. He won the 2024 Lol Sabha election from the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat in the East Medinipur district of Bengal. Even before his resignation as a judge, Gangopadhyay had several run-ins with the ruling Trinamool Congress (BJP) government for almost two years. A high court judge since May 2018, Justice Gangopadhyay sparked rows by ignoring orders of larger nenches, giving an interview to a television channel, and issuing directions to the Supreme Court registry. From 2022, he passed several orders directing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the alleged school jobs scam in West Bengal. The alleged scam saw Justice Gangopadhyay order CBI investigations and terminating more than 32,000 appointments of teachers. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express.
