Erie families plant their own veggies at new community garden
The property adjacent to the former Burton Grade School in the City of Erie was alive with activity Wednesday morning. Dozens of people from the surrounding neighborhood were pitching in to plant a community garden. Shoppers say this retailer gets it right, J.D. Power agrees The Urban Erie Community Development Corporation purchased the property two years ago. Since then, there have been efforts to invest in the neighborhood that's one-third single-family households and 50% children. One thing they all have in common is the desire to grow their own food. Breeze Airways flight to Tampa makes return three months earlier than 2024 'We've got about 40 families cultivating a community garden. They're from different countries. They speak different languages, different cultures. They're Christian and Muslim. It's just a feat to behold,' said Gary Horton, founder and CEO of the Urban Erie Community Development Corporation. MCIC awarded $149K for Savocchio Opportunity Park projects
(WJET/WFXP)– Erie's Minority Community Investment Coalition (MCIC) has been awarded more grant funding to help continue improving Savocchio Opportunity Park. MCIC announced they received $149,492 in funding Monday to help improve the park's sidewalks and walkability with the funds coming from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED). Progress on new facilities, greenhouses almost complete at Savocchio Opportunity Park This marks the third round of funding for the park with the other two coming from the Department of Agriculture as expansion continues at the park with the construction of greenhouses wrapping up in December 2024. 'We are very grateful to the CFA for this grant. This will allow us to extend sidewalks around the property, improving access to the Grow Erie commercial and community greenhouses,' said MCIC Board President Shantel Hilliard. More supported needed as Savocchio Opportunity Park construction continues 'The improvements to this site and the opportunities that will come from both the community and commercial facility are immense. UECDC is located nearby and this grant will allow our neighbors to benefit from additional sidewalks and safe access to the Savocchio campus,' said fellow board member and co-founder Gary Horton. Aspiring job seekers head downtown for Urban Erie Community Development Corporation job fair
Aspiring job candidates made their way downtown hoping to land a new job. The Urban Erie Community Development Corporation (UECDC) held a job fair campaign on Friday. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., job seekers can come to the Warner Theatre and meet with a variety of potential employers who are currently hiring. The goal of this event was to build a pipeline to employment and help younger generations find a career path. 'Today not only are the seeds of hope planted to find quality people who want to work but to also push back against that wave that seems to be coming to somehow reduce the talent skills and opportunities of new Americans of people of color of young people and of women,' said Gary Horton, director of the Urban Erie Community Development Corporation.
