People fear student favourite Gassy's in Cardiff is set to close but the truth is different

People fear student favourite Gassy's in Cardiff is set to close but the truth is different Eagle-eyed patrons spotted a sign at the much loved pub, suggesting that they were closing - but all was not as it seemed There was speculation that Gassy's would be closing its doors for good (Image: Rob Browne/Walesonline ) Speculation swirled this week after a sign spotted behind the bar at popular student haunt, Gassy's, led many to believe that the venue was shutting down for good. The message, which read: "Due to closing down, we have reduced draught stock," sparked concern from regulars who feared the end of an era for the well-loved pub in Salisbury Road, Cathays. ‌ Known for its themed nights, student deals and famously lively drag queen karaoke Thursdays, Gassy's has long been a staple of the student social scene. ‌ For over three decades, Gassy's, (formally known as Gassy Jacks) has been more than just a pub - it's been a part of the fabric of life at Cardiff University; a familiar setting on nights out, society socials and post-lecture pints. One disheartened student shared: "It's always been somewhere fun that you could wind down after a long day at the library, or to stop off on the way to Misfits! I'll miss their £3 Moretti on the student deal." Another added: "Life at Cardiff Uni wouldn't be the same without Gassy's!" A spokesperson from Stonegate Pub Partners, which owns the venue, confirmed that Gassy's would be returning under new management following a brief transition. ‌ "So, Gassy's will not be closing permanently," they stated. "The site will be transitioning to our Publican Partners division from 26th June and will re-open shortly afterwards under the management of a new publican. "We understand that Gassy's has been a popular fixture for Cardiff University students over the years, and we're confident it will continue to serve the local community under its new publican." Over the decades, Gassy's has cemented its place in Cardiff nightlife. The venue's rich history even includes a surprise visit from Welsh music legend, Tom Jones. In October, 1992, the Sex Bomb singer dropped in after midnight to watch his backing band for a late night "jamming" session. ‌ Welsh singing superstar Tom Jones pictured during a gig by his backing band at Cardiff pub, Gassy Jacks. Pub promoter Alan Jones said at the time: "It was a brilliant night. Tom sang for almost an hour, belting out all his big hits. "Tom sang 12 songs and he obviously didn't want to leave the stage. He told me afterwards that he was thrilled at the fantastic reaction he received from such a young crowd." Article continues below
