Gateway Arch Park reveals $380M transformation

'It's a $380-million project that is the largest public-private partnership in the history of the national park service.' On Wednesday, FOX 2 got a media preview tour of the new features at the Old Courthouse at Gateway Arch National Park in downtown St. Louis. 'It's built in phases between 1839 and 1862 and built wing by wing,' said Jeremy Sweat, Gateway Arch National Park superintendent. 'It wasn't built in one construction phase.' May 3 is the grand opening festival. The project has resulted in the revitalization of the Gateway Arch Park grounds and visitor center, the Museum at the Gateway Arch and much more. 'We didn't know we'd be part of the rebrand and opening in May.' A number of upgrades, from revitalized courtrooms and exhibits to new glass railings for safety, are not always visible to the naked eye. 'One of the things I like to talk about in the gallery designed for justice is that's what it was designed for,' said Pam Sanfilippo, Gateway Arch National Park Program manager. Located at 200 S. 4th St. adjacent to the noteworthy St. Louis Gateway Arch, the Millennium Hotel's redevelopment project aims to become an exciting destination for locals. 'We are delivering on our promise to take swift action to bring vibrancy once again to this critical downtown location,' said Ryan McClure, executive director of Gateway Arch Park Foundation. 'By selecting a developer before closing on this property, we are continuing momentum with purpose and dedication.' Cordish's project also looks to strengthen notable connections around the St. Louis area, including the Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium, Ballpark Village and the Mississippi River. Greater St. Louis Interim CEO Dustin Allison expressed in the news release about how this project can establish a vibrant spot in downtown St. Louis. 'The Cordish Companies is honored to have been selected by the Gateway Arch Park Foundation for this transformative project in downtown St. Louis,' said Blake Cordish, principal for Cordish Companies. 'This development is a once-in-a-generation moment to reimagine and continue to reinvigorate downtown's urban core. By linking new and existing assets to thriving corridors, this project will act as a catalyst for further revitalization, bringing more residents and visitors, attracting new businesses, and driving long-term growth and vitality for St. Louis and the region.' St. Louis' historic Old Courthouse to reopen this spring after renovations
ST. LOUIS – After two years of extensive renovations, the historic Old Courthouse in Downtown St. Louis is now set to reopen this spring. The Gateway Arch Park Foundation has announced the Old Courthouse will reopen on May 3, 2025. The Old Courthouse represents nearly two centuries worth of St. Louis history. The new upgrades include its first elevator, improved HVAC and fire suppression systems, more office space and new historical exhibits. At town hall, Missouri congressman tells apoplectic crowd, 'God has a plan' 'The Old Courthouse has been the site of some of the most pivotal moments in American history, and now it will offer visitors an even deeper connection to its past,' said Jeremy Sweat, Superintendent of Gateway Arch National Park. 'With the new exhibits, enhanced accessibility, and structural updates, the Old Courthouse will continue to be a vital educational and cultural resource for generations to come.' Crews are putting the finishing touches on the Old Courthouse's second major renovation project, which came with a $27 million price tag. Developer picked to demolish Millennium Hotel, revamp site
ST. LOUIS – A long-vacant landmark in Downtown St. Louis is one step closer to a major transformation as a new developer steps in to revitalize the grounds of the Millennium Hotel. The Gateway Arch Park Foundation has selected The Cordish Companies, a Baltimore-based firm, to lead the redevelopment. The initial $670 million plan includes demolishing the existing hotel and transforming the site into a dynamic mixed-use development. The Millennium Hotel has sat vacant for more than a decade. Originally opening in 1969, it was once the largest hotel in the City of St. Louis. The hotel had 780 rooms, 19 suites, and a signature revolving restaurant at the top of the tall 28-story tower. However, years of declining conditions led to the property's closure in January 2014. New plans call for luxury residential spaces, public spaces, an amphitheater, a food hall, event space, and a potential home for Gateway Arch National Park's archives. 'We are delivering on our promise to take swift action to bring vibrancy once again to this critical downtown location,' said Ryan McClure, Executive Director of Gateway Arch Park Foundation. 'By selecting a developer before closing on this property, we are continuing momentum with purpose and dedication. In November 2024, the Gateway Arch Park Foundation requested development proposals after securing a contract to purchase the Millennium Hotel site. Last month, it reviewed submissions from several local partners and independent experts to evaluate plans based on feasibility and community impact. Leaders sought a plan that either called for adaptive reuse or demolition of the vacant hotel. Many proposals recommended demolition. Cordish's plan stood out for its vision to enhance connection to St. Louis' nearby landmarks, most notably the Gateway Arch and Busch Stadium, while celebrating the city's natural and cultural heritage. 'This development is a once-in-a-generation moment to reimagine and continue to reinvigorate downtown's urban core,' said Blake Cordish, Principal of The Cordish Companies. 'By linking new and existing assets to thriving corridors, this project will act as a catalyst for further revitalization, bringing more residents and visitors, attracting new businesses, and driving long-term growth and vitality for St. Louis and the region.' There is at least one formality that awaits before the plan can officially take effect.
