Gears Of War: Reloaded confirmed for PS5 but fans are divided over one thing
The game, originally released in 2006, has gone multiplatform and multiplayer with a "remaster from the ground up"
A much anticipated video game will be landing on PlayStation 5, but despite exciting new features that allow multiple people to get involved on multiple platforms, the drop has left many fans divided over what is yet another remake.
Gears of War: Reloaded will be released this summer in honour of the 20th anniversary of "the game that started it all" - Gears of War - which comes next year in 2026. Hailed as "a celebration of one of gaming's most iconic franchises," the game will be multiplayer and multiplatform, promising to deliver "the most complete version of the original game to date".
With the original game released in 2006, Gears of War: Reloaded introduces the franchise to a new generation of players. However, some gaming enthusiasts have been left frustrated and not hugely impressed by the remake element.
Many took to X, previously Twitter, to express their annoyance. One wrote: "Is any company capable of making a new game or IP??? I am SO SICK of remakes.
"This is the SECOND remake of the same game now. Why not do 2 or 3? You could have ported the original REMAKE to PS5.
"Coalition really needs to get their priorities straight. I'm calling it right now, they are gonna remake two and three later down the line and charge you $40 for each of those games also. So that with Gears 6 will be $200 total. And Gears 6 surely will be riddled with micro transactions."
Another said: "Gears of War on PlayStation… I guess Halo is up next soon, strange era of gaming we are in." A third chimed in :"Another remaster? Was expecting a complete remake from the ground up".
A fourth wrote: "This is just the 1st game remastered yet again? Or the original trilogy?" A fifth wondered: "Is this just a remaster of the first game..."
Others didn't share in the rage, though, and were thrilled by the details. "This is awesome," one enthused, while another simply commented: "Let's go!"
Microsoft unveiled a remaster of the original Gears of War game from the Xbox 360 in what has been dubbed one of the platform's most important exclusives. The game will be released for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
Rumours suggested that all three initial games would be getting a remaster but there's no sign of the other two yet, although Microsoft is already hinting at further releases, or game announcements, for the series' 20th anniversary.
Reloaded doesn't have a reveal trailer as of yet, with the news only being announced on Xbox Wire at 5pm on Bank Holiday Monday (May 5).
The game will feature support for 120 fps and 4K resolution, with cross-progression and cross-play on all formats and extensive new multiplayer options.
Reloaded will include split-screen and online options for two-players with eight-player PvP also available. The remaster also includes new HDR, Dolby Vision & 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos, and 7.1.4 3D Spatial Audio options.
Plus, the promise of zero loading screens, improved shadows and reflections (but no specific mention of ray-tracing), and 4K assets and remastered textures.
It'll include all the content ever released for the game, including previous remaster Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition, with all DLC, maps, modes, bonuses. A "full roster of classic characters and cosmetics" is promised as unlockables.
The remaster is set to cost £39.999 in the UK and will launch on August 26, 2025.
There'll be no additional charge to play it via Game Pass, but it's also a free upgrade for anyone that already owns Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, in other words, if you bought a digital version before 5pm BST on May 5.
"No matter where you play, Reloaded has been re-engineered to look and feel incredible," Xbox added.
