Islamic State (ISIS) Supporter Online Recommends Encrypted Messaging App 'Status'
On April 11, 2025, a of an Islamic State (ISIS) online forum published a post recommending the Status messaging app, comparing it to encrypted platform Discord. He noted the downsides of using the app, saying it does not allow the sending of files and lacks advanced features. He concluded that it is faster that similar apps Session and SimpleX.
As jihadi accounts on platforms such as Telegram continue to face deletions, ISIS supporters continue to search for alternatives. One jihadi outlet promoted the SimpleX app – which ISIS supporters have recommended since 2023 – as a secure platform,. Facing a major crackdown on jihadi channels on Telegram in December 2024, ISIS media experimented with other platforms, including the Gem Space messaging app, although some supporters cautioned that Gem Space is not secure.
