How Google showed presentation with OpenAI, Microsoft and Facebook parent Meta to prove options exist for users
Google has revealed in court, through an internal presentation from September 2024, that OpenAI, Microsoft and Facebook-parent company Meta Platforms have approached Samsung regarding potential deals to integrate their AI chatbots into Samsung phones, The Information reported. Google shared this information to bolster the company's argument that customers have a variety of choices available to them. Motorola to have multiple AI chatbots pre-installed According to a separate report, Google executive Peter Fitzgerald, the vice president of platforms and device partnerships at Google, later testified in Washington federal court as part of the Justice Department's antitrust case against Google that Motorola was also collaborating with several AI companies, including Perplexity, Microsoft and Google. Furthermore, Fitzgerald informed the court that Google had sent letters the previous week to phone manufacturers and US wireless carriers, explicitly stating that its contractual agreements do not restrict them from installing voice assistants or generative AI applications from other companies. Google paid Samsung to pre-install Gemin app The development comes after it was revealed that Google paid enormous sums to preinstall the Gemini app on Samsung phones. Fitzgerald disclosed during his testimony that the company initiated these payments to Samsung for Gemini in January of this year. As per the contract, which is slated to run for a minimum of two years, there's a fixed monthly payment to Samsung for each device that comes equipped with the pre-installed Gemini application. Fitzgerald also informed the court that Samsung receives a percentage of the advertising revenue generated by Google within the Gemini app. The precise monetary figure of Google's monthly payments to Samsung for Gemini was not disclosed in court, however, DOJ lawyer David Dahlquist emphasised that the search giant remits an 'enormous sum of money in a fixed monthly payment' to the South Korean electronics manufacturer.
