UN special envoy to combat Islamophobia: Pakistan greets appointment of Miguel Ángel Moratinos
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan warmly welcomed the appointment of the High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Miguel Ángel Moratinos, as the United Nations Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, pursuant to General Assembly Resolution 78/264, entitled, 'Measures to Combat Islamophobia.' This historic appointment marks a major milestone in the United Nations' efforts to combat the alarming rise in Islamophobia, hatred, intolerance, and discrimination against Muslims worldwide. Pakistan takes pride in having initiated, led, and successfully steered, on behalf of the OIC, the adoption of General Assembly Resolution 78/264, which established the mandate for the Secretary-General to appoint a Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia. This builds on Pakistan's earlier leadership in the adoption of General Assembly Resolution 76/ 254, which proclaimed 15 March as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia. The appointment of the Special Envoy is timely and essential, as Islamophobia continues to escalate to deeply alarming levels around the world. Pakistan observes with grave concern the organised campaigns of vilification against Muslims, attacks on mosques, assaults on Muslim communities, and unprovoked aggressions against Muslim-majority countries — often perpetrated by those who hypocritically claim to uphold democratic and secular values. Such systematic and deliberate acts, driven by supremacist ideologies and populist rhetoric, endanger international peace and security, and gravely undermine the foundational principles of the United Nations Charter. There is an urgent need for enhanced and coordinated global action to promote respect for religious and cultural diversity, foster mutual understanding, and uphold the dignity, rights, and freedoms of all peoples. Pakistan remains firmly committed to continuing its leadership role in the global fight against Islamophobia, promoting interfaith harmony, and advocating for the protection of all religious communities. Pakistan also eagerly anticipates the Secretary-General's forthcoming comprehensive Action Plan to Combat Islamophobia, which will provide a much-needed strategic framework to guide international efforts against this rising menace. Pakistan looks forward to working closely with the Special Envoy in fulfilling his important mandate and supporting efforts to advance a world anchored in tolerance, coexistence, and justice. Malaysia joins ICJ advisory opinion proceedings in support of Palestine
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will participate in the public hearings on the advisory opinion regarding Israel's obligations concerning the Occupied Palestinian Territory at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, beginning Monday (April 28). The public hearings on the "Obligations of Israel in relation to the Presence and Activities of the United Nations, other International Organisations, and Third States in, and in relation to, the Occupied Palestinian Territory' are scheduled from April 28 to May 2. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) said that Minister for Law and Institutional Reform in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic) will lead the Malaysian delegation, accompanied by senior officials from Wisma Putra, Legal Affairs Division, Attorney General's Chambers, and the Embassy of Malaysia in The Hague. Azalina is scheduled to address the Court on April 28 at 11.00 pm Malaysian time. "This marks Malaysia's third participation in ICJ Advisory Opinion proceedings related to Palestine, following previous engagements in 2004 and 2024. "The hearings aim to provide an advisory opinion on the legal responsibilities of Israel concerning its presence and actions in the territory, and the implications for the United Nations, international organisations, and third states. "Malaysia's involvement underscores its commitment to upholding international law and advocating for Palestinian rights,' the statement read. The Foreign Ministry stated that Malaysia stands firm in her principled stance of continuing to advocate for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State, based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as part of her commitment to justice, peace and respect for international law. This Advisory Opinion stems from the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 79/232 adopted on Dec 19, 2024. Malaysia co-sponsored and voted in favour of this Resolution and was part of the Core Group that initiated the Resolution. Malaysia will join 39 other States and four international organisations at the Oral Hearings. On Feb 28, Malaysia submitted a Written Statement to the Court, in pursuance of continued advocacy for Palestinian rights, and emphasised the urgent need for accountability for Israel's clear and blatant violations of international law, which undermine the Palestinian people's right to self-determination. In light of the renewed and ongoing offensive against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, Malaysia remains resolute in reinforcing these arguments during the upcoming Oral Hearings. Malaysia's participation for the third time at the Advisory Opinion Proceedings is a continuation of previous participations in 2004 and 2024, respectively. - Bernama

Saudi Arabia Calls for Strengthening Global Peacekeeping Capacity
Saudi Arabia emphasized the need to strengthen the international system's capacity to maintain global peace and security in line with the United Nations Charter, during a high-level meeting at the UN Security Council on Tuesday. Representing Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed Al-Khereiji said the growing challenges and ongoing violent developments facing the international community demand the utmost effectiveness from the multilateral system. The Security Council, as the central body, must engage impartially and objectively with all issues within its mandate, he urged. Saudi Arabia underscores the importance of combining effectiveness with multilateralism and proper representation in any genuine efforts for reform and global governance, he added. He reiterated Saudi Arabia's commitment to the importance of intergovernmental negotiations on reforming the multilateral system, emphasizing that it should take place through the General Assembly, in line with General Assembly Resolution 62/557, which was adopted by consensus. He highlighted the growing crisis of trust in the United Nations and its bodies, particularly the Security Council, in fulfilling their responsibility to maintain global peace and security and resolve conflicts through peaceful means. Al-Khereiji reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's call for reforming the Security Council to better reflect the current global reality, make it more effective in responding to international transformations, and boost its efficiency in addressing shared challenges. Saudi Arabia is fully prepared to work with other member states to achieve this goal, he stressed.
