Iraq's Development Road +$4B trade corridor finalized
Shafaq News/ Iraq completed the first section of the Development Road project and began the handover process, the General Company for Ports announced on Saturday. Company Director Farhan Al-Fartousi told Shafaq News that the road is being built with three lanes designated for heavy trucks and cargo. 'The first section of the road stretches from Grand Al-Faw Port to the submerged tunnel, covering 51 kilometers, and then continues from the tunnel to the main Safwan road for an additional 11 kilometers, bringing the total length of this segment to 62 km,' he explained. The project includes two major bridges—one measuring 805 meters and the other 300 meters in length. The road will also be equipped with a solar-powered lighting system implemented by Samsung, aimed at providing sustainable energy and advanced technology. Last month, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced that Turkiye plans to finalize an agreement with Iraq 'very soon' on the Development Road project. The Grand Al-Faw Port is a strategic megaproject located on Al-Faw Peninsula in Basra province, southern Iraq. It aims to transform the country into a regional trade hub by connecting it to global transport networks. The port project is estimated to cost around $4.6B and spans 54 square km. It is expected to have a capacity of 99M tons annually, positioning it among the largest ports in the Gulf and the tenth largest globally.

Iraq nears completion of major Al-Faw Port projects
Shafaq News/ Key components of the Grand Al-Faw Port project have reached advanced stages of completion, Iraq's General Company for Ports announced on Saturday. The company's Director General Farhan Al-Fartousi told Shafaq News that construction of the port's five berths had been finalized, while 85% of the navigation channel is complete and the submerged tunnel stood at 70%. Additionally, progress on the container yard had reached 89%, and the access road connecting the port to the highway network is 99% complete. 'These projects are expected to be fully delivered within this year, as part of a comprehensive execution plan developed by the company,' Al-Fartousi revealed, noting that a fully integrated electronic project management system had been deployed, covering modern protection and monitoring technologies in cooperation with major international firms such as Daewoo Engineering & Construction and Italy's Technital. The concrete wall for the berths was completed in 2024, foundations were laid, and work began on the container yard. Construction efforts are proceeding in parallel, with a focus on delivering the final five projects simultaneously. Earlier this week, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu stated that Turkiye plans to finalize an agreement with Iraq 'very soon' to connect the Iraqi port of Al-Faw to Turkish territory. Located on the Al-Faw Peninsula in southern Basra province, the Grand Al-Faw Port is a strategic development aimed at transforming Iraq into a regional trade hub by linking it to global transport networks. The $4.6 billion project spans 54 square kilometers and is expected to handle up to 99 million tons annually, making it one of the largest ports in the Gulf and the tenth-largest globally. The planned depth of 19 meters will enable it to accommodate the world's largest commercial vessels.

Iraq lays key installations at khor Al-Zubair port
Shafaq News/ The contractor for the submerged tunnel project began settling essential installations on the first tunnel segment in the Khor Al-Zubair navigation channel, Iraq's General Company for Ports announced on Monday. The Company's Director General, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News that these installations (flotation buoys, survey towers, and GPS devices) are key for accurately mapping the tunnel's path, ensuring precision in execution, pointing out, 'This submerged tunnel will enhance cargo transport capacity under the Khor Al-Zubair channel.' All technical aspects of the project are being 'meticulously' studied under the supervision of the company's engineers and an Italian consultant, given that this is the first project of its kind in the Middle East and requires exact calculations with no margin for error, he continued. The tunnel is a major component of the Grand Faw Port project in southern Basra, connecting Faw to the Umm Qasr area via an underwater passage. Earlier today, Iraq's ports authority also announced that the road linking the Grand Faw Port to Umm Qasr Port is 97% complete, a development expected to improve transportation between the two locations.
