New ‘I Voted' sticker honors City of Washington's bicentennial
WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The Tazewell County Clerk and Recorder of Deeds Office is honoring bicentennial celebrations for communities across the area.
Over the next several years, a series of stickers will be released for communities celebrating their 200th anniversary. On Tuesday, a press conference was held at the Washington Bicentennial Office to announce the second sticker in the series.
The Washington Bicentennial 'I Voted' sticker was unveiled for the upcoming 2025 General Consolidated Election. Early voting for the election begins Thursday, Feb. 20.
Along with the sticker, Tazewell County Clerk, John Ackerman, has also released an 'I Voted' booklet to collect all the celebratory stickers until 2041. The stickers include commemorations for the City of Pekin, the City of Washington, the United States of America, the Tazewell County Bicentennial, the Village of Mackinaw, the Village of Tremont, and the City of Delavan.
Washington will continue to hold celebrations for its bicentennial from Aug. 13 until Aug. 24. John Amdell, a committee member with the Bicentennial Committee, said he's excited to get the community involved with the events. The committee has several events that have already been planned, including; a parade, tractor pull, art events, and more.
Local businesses will also be offering commemorative merchandise like Christmas decorations, mugs, Holland's popcorn, wine, and t-shirts from Washington Community High School.
Amdell said he has lived in the community for 27 years, and he is still surprised by the city's rich history.
'Going through the preparations has really opened my eyes to just what a wonderful historical city this is— with this rich history and wonderful traditions,' Amdell said. 'I feel really, really proud to be able to help others be able to go down the same learning journey and be able to also learn about Washington's history.'
