Billionaire PGA Tour star's father sold stunning mansion with own ice rink for $35 million

Maverick McNealy earned close to $1 million at the RBC Heritage last week, but is accustomed to living a life of luxury . The PGA Tour star has climbed to 10th in the world rankings and finished T3 at the RBC Heritage, three shots behind Andrew Novak and Justin Thomas. McNealy, 29, has one professional win and is edging closer to a second title with five top 10 finishes in 2025. Despite his success on the golf course, McNealy considered leaving the sport to pursue a career in business before turning pro. His dilemma was likely influenced by watching his father Scott McNealy build a company worth $7.4 billion. The golf star grew up in lavish surroundings, with his unique childhood home being sold for $35M last year. The Bay Area mansion that was previously the McNealy family home was initially listed for $96M in 2018. The golfer's parents spent $11M to build the vast property in 2008. Tech billionaire McNealy, who has an estimated net worth of $1BN, co-founded Sun Microsystems and sold the company for $7.4BN in 2010. Having made their fortune, the family designed the five-bedroom and seven-bathroom mansion around Maverick and their other three sons. The Portola Valley home remarkably boasted an ice hockey rink, golf course, rock-climbing wall, poker room, and party room with a disco ball. Other notable features included the home theater and gym, as well as a hidden bunker with panic buttons to ensure the family's safety. Scott McNealy played alongside Maverick at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February (Image:) Previous listing agent Deepee Chattha explained to SFGATE that the family was not serious about selling the 13-acre mansion until 2019. The couple almost halved the asking price to $53M and later remodelled the house in their attempt to find a buyer. 'A lot of heart went into building this home. It was built from love,' Chattha told SFGATE in 2020. Four years on, the private listing was bought by an LLC named Zenith Property for $35M last July. Having access to a home golf course would have helped PGA star McNealy hone his skills. As a teenager, he was rated among the top golf prospects in the US and has since made his mark in the pro ranks, winning the RSM Classic in November 2024. Earning his first victory on the PGA Tour appears to have given McNealy added confidence this year. The 29-year-old had achieved two top 10 finishes before finishing runner-up by a stroke to Ludvig Aberg at the Genesis Open in February. A week later, McNealy collected $960,000 for his performance at the RBC Heritage. According to the PGA , McNealy has earned $4.8M so far this year. His overall career earnings stand at $17M since joining the tour in 2020. McNealy's upbringing around golf has also benefited one of his siblings. Since late last year, the world No.10 has been caddied by his youngest brother, Scout.

Phil Mickelson Fuels Speculation With Bold Comments on Tiger Woods' Golf League

There have been a lot of changes over the past few years in the world of professional golf, and more changes are expected as we head into the future. Many are hoping that the fracture between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf gets resolved, bringing the best players in the game back together. One of the other recent changes in the professional golfing world is the arrival of the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL), an indoor venture spearheaded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. The first season of the TGL wrapped up on Tuesday night, with the Atlanta Dream, led by Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, and Billy Horschel, beating the New York Golf Club in a thrilling final match. Advertisement In general, the first season of the TGL was a massive success, with fans turning out for the in-person experience at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, and ratings on ESPN looking strong. This success has led the infamous Phil Mickelson, one of the players who has further driven the division in professional golf by leaving the PGA Tour for LIV, to turn heads with some glowing compliments of the new league. Phil Mickelson: Fantasy Golf Picks for the Genesis Open 2019 "It would be great for golf if this were to succeed," Mickelson said on social media. "The golf fan is the most loyal fan in sports. Buy a ticket, walk miles and see a fraction of the action, but this could allow the golf fan to buy a ticket, sit down and watch 100% of the action just like other sports. It could really be good for the game if it's compelling." Advertisement For someone who has been in the headlines recently due more to negative things that he has said, rather than positive, this sort of response is definitely sparking some speculation amongst fans. Does Phil have an end-game here by throwing massive compliments at the TGL? He certainly could, be it trying to repair relationships with Woods and McIlroy amidst the ongoing rumors about an agreement between the PGA and LIV, rejoining the two sides. There is also a future where the TGL opens up its doors to LIV golfers, allowing players like Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Jon Rahm a seat at the table. If that were to happen, Mickelson would undoubtedly be in line to create his own team as one of the biggest names in the sport, so it makes sense that he wants to get it out there that he is a fan of the product, and sees a bright future. Whatever happens, it's clear that Mickelson is a fan of what his longtime rival Tiger Woods has helped create in the golfing world, and he wants to have a hand to play in the future of it. As spectators of the sport, Phil's inclusion would be a great development. Related: Phil Mickelson Faces Backlash for Controversial Statement About LIV Golf, Ryder Cup

Deal to unite golf 'not any closer'

Rory McIlroy says he does not think a deal to unite golf is "any closer" despite talks between the PGA Tour, LIV Golf and United States president Donald Trump. The sport has been fractured since Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf launched in 2022 and recruited some of the sport's leading players from the PGA Tour, including Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. Discussions over a possible merger started in June 2023 and, in February, the PGA Tour held "constructive" talks with LIV Golf chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and president Trump at the White House. At the Genesis Open, 15-time major winner Tiger Woods said he thought the divide would "heal quickly" following the talks. However, McIlroy doesn't believe the PGA Tour "needs" a deal to be struck, and said any plans to unify the sport are still far away from coming to fruition. "I don't think it's ever felt that close but it doesn't feel like it's any closer," said Northern Ireland's McIlroy. "I think the narrative around golf would welcome a deal in terms of having the best players together again. "But I don't think the PGA Tour needs a deal." PGA Tour holds 'constructive' talks with Trump and LIV Golf McIlroy said momentum in the PGA Tour is "pretty strong", adding "TV's been good and the TGL [McIlroy's and Woods' golf league] has been hopefully pretty additive to the overall situation". When asked why he felt a deal was not close, McIlroy said: "It takes two to tango." "If one party is willing and ready and the other isn't, it makes it tough," he said. "The landscape might have looked a little different then than it does now over these past couple of weeks. "I think a deal would still be the ideal scenario for golf as a whole, but from a pure PGA perspective, I don't think it necessarily needs it." McIlroy is only scheduled to play the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship before his latest bid for Masters glory from 10-13 April. He currently has a three-week gap in his schedule before the Masters, the only major McIlroy has yet to win. The 35-year-old said he has "still to make a decision" over whether he will play any additional events before lining out at Augusta. "I'm going to play these next two weeks and I'll see how they go, and then I'll re-assess," he said. "I don't like the idea of having three weeks off going into the Masters so I may add one event, but I'm still between what event that may be. "It really depends on how these two weeks go and how I'm feeling about my game. "I'd imagine I'll add an event leading into there, it just depends on whether it's Houston or San Antonio."
