Stepping into a captain's shoes is a tough task, especially in high-pressure sports like golf, where the weight of responsibility, combined with the expectations to perform at the highest level, is on top. And nobody can know it better than the 15-time Major winner, Tiger Woods, who led the U.S. team as playing captain during the 2019 Presidents Cup. Under his guidance, the U.S. team retained the cup with a narrow 16-14 victory. This dominance is nothing new for the Americans, who have been setting the standard at the Presidents Cup since its inception in 1994, having won 13 of the 15 events played. The 2026 Presidents Cup will be held at Medinah Country Club, and with have a new captain. The event is set to take place from September 25-28 at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, adding another layer of complexity to his role. When Snedeker learned about his new position, he was, "Just very humbled, kind of shocked, to be honest with you," he said during a conference call with reporters on Tuesday. "I got the call a couple weeks ago. Trying to wrap my head around what this is going to look like and then what this is going to entail," he added. "Just super honored, super humbled to be leading this team and be part of this great history of the Presidents Cup and the captain that came before me." PHOTOS: REUTERS CHICAGO - Brandt Snedeker and Australia's Geoff Ogilvy have been named as captains of the US and International teams, respectively, on April 29 for the 2026 edition of the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago. Snedeker, a nine-times winner on the PGA Tour who was the US-based circuit's 2007 rookie of the year, was a captain's assistant at 2024's Presidents Cup and will serve as one of Keegan Bradley's vice-captains for the 2025 Ryder Cup. The 44-year-old American represented the US Team in the 2013 Presidents Cup, where he compiled a 2-3-0 record, and played in the 2012 and 2016 Ryder Cups. "I'm looking forward to leading our guys into Medinah for what will certainly be an amazing week of golf," said Snedeker. "Representing my country in team competition has been a highlight of my PGA Tour career, and I will lean on those experiences to ensure we are prepared and ready to compete against what I know will be a unified and determined International Team." Ogilvy, who counts the 2006 US Open among his eight wins on the PGA Tour, takes over at the helm of the International Team after serving as a captain's assistant in the last four iterations of the Presidents Cup. The 47-year-old Australian played on three consecutive International Teams (2007, 2009, 2011), where he amassed a 7-6-1 record. "Since Ernie Els debuted the shield in 2019, the International Team's spirit has intensified and grown as we have rallied around this symbol which embodies our shared ambition and unifies both players and fans," said Ogilvy. "I intend to carry that momentum forward, just as the captains before me have, to build strong support for our international players in the lead up and throughout the event." The 2026 Presidents Cup will be held Sept 24-27, 2026 on Medinah Country Club's Course #3, site of the 2012 Ryder Cup where Europe overcame a four-point deficit on the final day to retain the Cup in what is known as the "Miracle at Medinah". The United States prevailed in Montreal in September 2024 for a 10th consecutive Presidents Cup triumph, improving to 13-1-1 in the biennial match play event against a line-up of international players from outside Europe. Presidents Cup: Geoff Ogilvy named International Team captain

Don't miss out on the headlines from Golf. Followed categories will be added to My News. Geoff Ogilvy is hopeful and confident the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will have aligned closely enough for him to consider picking Australian stars including Cameron Smith when he captains the International Team at the 2026 Presidents Cup. Ogilvy, the 2006 US Open champ, has been given the 'humbling' role, filled in the past by some of the game's greatest players, including Greg Norman, Ernie Els and Gary Player, who was the Australian's first captain when he played in 2007, for next year's event at Medinah. While LIV players including Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau played Ryder Cup for team USA in 2023, and are in line for selection again this year, there was no LIV presence at last year's Presidents Cup, an event run by the PGA Tour. But with 'reunification' high on the agenda of PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, Ogilvy said having the chance to pick the likes of Smith and Chilean star Joaquin Niemann, who has won three LIV events this year, would be a massive bonus. 'Absolutely, having Jaco and Cam and Herbie (Lucas Herbert) and Leish (Marc Leishman) to pick would be great for us,' Ogilvy said from the US after his role was confirmed. 'There's a bit to play out and the two tours would obviously need to become more closely aligned.' Cameron Smith playing in the 2019 Presidents Cup. Picture:Ogilvy has a long history with the Presidents Cup having been part of seven teams dating back to 2007, three times as a player and the past four as a captain's assistant, including at Royal Melbourne in 2019. He conceded there was some 'meandering' during the early 2000s as the US dominated the event, but a renaissance launched by former captain Ernie Els in 2019, and the emergence of the first generation of players who grew up wanting to be on the team, has created a new energy. The 'motivation' of Korean star Tom Kim and Australia's own Min Woo Lee to topple the US could be one of the key elements to end the winning drought. 'It's great to have those young personalities who are flamboyant and excited. Enthusiasm is contagious and the more enthusiasm you get inside the team the better,' Ogilvy said. 'It's an important ingredient. Anytime you see any team win in any sport there's usually a lot of enthusiasm behind that, whether the players are the catalyst or the coach or the captain. Geoff Ogilvy (right) has been a Presidents Cup assistant four times, including in Melbourne in 2019. Picture: Michael Klein 'Everyone has to turn up, play well. You need things you go your way, the US team is always tough to beat. 'But our guys, every single time we do this, they are getting more and more motivated and they want to win it more and more. 'It's coming. A win is coming.' While the young crop of players loom large as the core of the team, Ogilvy said veteran Adam Scott, who has played on the past 11 teams, was also high in his plans. 'He's still a very active player and highly focused on his golf. I'm hoping he's playing,' he said. Ogilvy said the prestige of the role he'd been given was not lost on him. 'Gary Player was my first captain, just an absolute legend of the sport,' he said. 'To even be considered, it's very humbling and really exciting.' The US team will be captained by Brandt Snedeker, who will get his eye in as vice-captain for this year's Ryder Cup. Ogilvy has a long history with the Presidents Cup as a player and now as captain. The 16th Presidents Cup will be contested at Medinah Country Club's Course No.3, a layout Ogilvy's design firm OCM renovated more than two years before it was reopened in mid-2024. But Ogilvy said that knowledge might not be much of a factor. 'These are the best players in the world and they work out a golf course pretty fast,' he said. Ogilvy drew high praise from Monahan as well, labelled the 'perfect captain' for the 2026 event. 'Geoff will capitalise on the upward trend of the International Team,' he said. 'With his pedigree as a major champion and experience in the team room, Geoff was primed to take on this role.'
