Man, 55, killed in Northland homicide named

Police have released the name of the 55-year-old man found dead in Parakao, Northland, yesterday. Geoffrey Wayne Ware was found by ambulance staff on his rural property off Mangakahia Rd, on State Highway 15, just before 4pm on May 9. 'We would like to extend our condolences to Mr Ware's whānau and loved ones at this difficult time,' Detective Senior Sergeant Michelle Harris said. A homicide investigation was launched yesterday, and police say the enquiry team are making good progress in response their appeal for information. 'We are following some strong lines of enquiry." "I would like to acknowledge the public for their assistance,' Harris said. Police were still asking for anyone with sightings of a 1999 blue and silver Mitsubishi L200 ute, and reports of a man seen walking along State Highway 14 on the same afternoon and evening. Police added it would particularly like any dashcam footage on the same route between 2pm and 8pm. People with information could make a report online or by calling 105. Information could also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers.

A homicide investigation is continuing into the death of a man on 9 May, at a rural property in Parakao. Police can today name the victim as Geoffrey Wayne Ware, aged 55, who lived at the Mangakahia Road address. 'We would like to extend our condolences to Mr Ware's whānau and loved ones at this difficult time,' Detective Senior Sergeant Michelle Harris, from Whangarei Police, says. A post mortem has been completed and the 'Operation Cossar' enquiry team is making good progress. 'We are following some strong lines of enquiry' Detective Senior Sergeant Harris says. 'There has been an excellent response to our appeal released on Monday and I would like to acknowledge the public for their assistance.' Police are urging anyone else with information to get in touch. 'We are particularly seeking information and sightings in the area of Mangakahia Road, Otaika Valley Road and State Highway 14 towards Whangārei, between 2pm and 8pm on Friday May 9, of a 1999 blue and silver Mitsubishi L200 ute and of a man reportedly seen walking along SH14 that afternoon and evening,' Detective Senior Sergeant Harris says. 'Our investigation team is working hard to establish what happened,' Detective Senior Sergeant Harris says. 'We want to reassure the community we are doing everything we can to hold the person responsible to account.' Anyone with information is asked to make a report online, or by calling 105. He was 55-year-old Geoffrey Wayne Ware. His death, at a rural property off Mangakahia Road, about 40 kilometres west of Whangārei, was initially treated as unexplained . However, police later believed Ware was the victim of foul play . In a statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Michelle Harris said police were "following some strong lines of enquiry". Officers are now seeking sightings and information regarding a 1999 blue and silver Mitsubishi L200 seen in the areas of Mangakahia Road, Otaika Valley Road and State Highway 14 towards Whangārei between 2pm and 8pm on Friday 9 May. They are also looking for a man reportedly seen walking along State Highway 14 around that time. Anyone with information is asked to make a report online, or by calling 105 and quoting the reference number 250509/6749. Information can also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. Ware lived at the address where he died on May 9. Police have launched a homicide investigation named 'Operation Cossar', into Ware's death. Ambulance staff located Ware's body just before 4pm last Friday at the rural property about 40km west of Whangārei. Whangārei Detective Senior Sergeant Michelle Harris said police were following strong lines of inquiry and a post-mortem had been completed.
