Glasgow Warriors fought tooth and nail to win the United Rugby Championship last season and they are not going to give up their crown easily. This 36-18 victory over the Stormers puts them into next weekend's semi-finals where they will meet the winners of the Leinster-Scarlets tie. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Glasgow were worth their win as they brought to an end a run of three successive defeats in the URC. They had Scotstoun rocking at times with some brilliant rugby, shaking off their recent indifferent form. They scored five tries, the pick of them being a brilliant team effort which was finished by George Horne. George Horne celebrates his try as Glasgow Warriors take down Stormers in the URC quarter-finals. | SNS Group The scrum-half was excellent but there were so many star performers on the night to suggest Glasgow are coming to the boil at just the right time. Henco Venter, returning from a six-game suspension, was everywhere and also bagged a try. Fellow back-rower Rory Darge opened the scoring for the hosts and was a menace throughout, making over 20 tackles. Tom Jordan was back to his very best and Kyle Rowe weighed in with two tries and justified his selection ahead of the unlucky Sebastian Cancelliere. For Stormers, it is an abrupt end to their URC season and a sense of deja vu: they were eliminated in the quarter-final at Scotstoun by Glasgow last season too. 'It feels class,' said Darge afterwards. 'This is potentially our last game here at Scotstoun [this season] so we wanted to put a performance and get a result. When we bring physicality we get it right mentally too. To a man, we were on it. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Stormers' fast start The Warriors had to work hard to wear down the South African visitors. The Stormers had the wind at their backs and made a lively start. Glasgow conceded an early scrum penalty and it was an area in which they would struggle during the first half. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu opted to take the three points but Glasgow took control thereafter, even if the scoreboard didn't reflect fully their dominance. They were lively and inventive and scored three first-half tries as the fates conspired against the visitors. They lost their captain, Salmaan Moerat, to a head injury and then winger Seabelo Senatla was yellow-carded for stopping a try illegally following a crisp break by Kyle Steyn. The first try followed immediately and it came from a clever lineout ploy. Scott Cummings leapt high in the air but hooker Gregor Hiddleston threw it short to Euan Ferrie who shipped it on to Darge to score. The Warriors got their second six minutes later when Sione Tuipulotu kicked a long, measured grubber into space. Rowe latched on to it to score. Horne made sure with both conversions to put Glasgow 14-3 ahead with 15 minutes on the clock. Sione Tuipulotu chips the ball through the Stormers defence. | SNS Group The Stormers stayed in touch with a second Feinberg-Mngomezulu penalty and they narrowed the gap further as Glasgow continued to struggle at the scrum. Feinberg-Mngomezulu hoisted a free-kick high in the air and the ball bounced off Senatla's knee on the way down. The winger had just returned from the sin-bin but gratefully latched on to the loose ball to score Stormers' first try. Feinberg-Mngomezulu converted to make it a one-point game. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Glasgow's response was immediate as they scored their third try from the restart. Again, it came from a lineout but this time via a more traditional driving maul, with Venter picking up from the tail to score. It was breathless stuff and there were casualties. Dan du Plessis departed on the half-hour to be replaced by Springbok Manie Libbok and two minutes later there was the sad sight of Murphy Walker trudging off. The Warriors prop was making his first start of the season after a succession of injuries but had to make way for Sam Talakai. Glasgow's strong defence The Stormers ended the half in the ascendancy but Glasgow's defence was resolute and when they won a turnover against Feinberg-Mngomezulu it was celebrated like a try. As befitting a knockout tie, both sides were throwing caution to the wind and there were three tries in the opening 11 minutes of the second half. The Stormers struck first, Senatla running in his second after an assist by Warrick Gelant and a lovely dummy from Libbok. Feinberg-Mngomezulu had the conversion to put the Stormers ahead but he missed and Glasgow led 19-18. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Warriors in full flow are a joy to watch and their next two tries were thrilling scores. Rowe finished the first after a brilliant surging run by the outstanding Jordan and then Horne scored the try of the night. It began when Glasgow pinched a Stormers lineout and continued with Jordan's brilliant looped pass to Josh McKay. The full-back shipped it on to Rowe and the winger was admirably unselfish as he tossed it back inside rather than go for his hat-trick. Horne grabbed it gratefully and then converted his own score to make it 33-18 to the hosts. It was the scrum-half's 13th try of the season and he added a penalty five minutes later to put the Warriors out of sight. Glasgow will find out on Saturday who they will meet in the semis. If it's Leinster they will travel to Dublin but if it's Scarlets Glasgow will have home advantage. Horne challenges Glasgow to display mindset of champions in title defence

George Horne has challenged Glasgow to display the mindset of champions all over again as they bid to defend their United Rugby Championship title. The scrum-half believes last year's success can have an inspirational effect on his side as they prepare for Friday's quarter-final at home to Stormers. But he insisted they can take nothing for granted as they try to successfully negotiate the play-offs for the second year running. 'We'd done a lot of losing big games in the past and that kind of probably gave us the experience to work out what was needed to be done to win it last year,' said Horne. 'But you can't just expect that to happen again, we've got to make it happen. We've got a good, experienced team now. We've been there and done it, but it's going to have to be done again if we want to keep going further in this competition.' Glasgow won 27-10 at home to Stormers at the same stage of last year's championship before pulling off famous away wins over Munster and Bulls to claim the silverware. 'We can learn from it, obviously playing the same opposition, but it means nothing in terms of going into this year,' Horne said of the upcoming visit from the South Africans. 'We've still got to put out a performance this weekend. 'We can't just rest on the laurels of what we did last year. We'll use the experience of winning those tight games, but we know we've got to turn up on Friday if we're going to do it again.' Glasgow go into the play-offs on the back of a three-game losing streak and having lost four of their last five matches. Horne admitted their form was 'not ideal' but was heartened by the way they performed in their most recent outing, a 13-5 defeat at Leinster on the final day of the regulation campaign. 'Look, it's not ideal, we want to win every game we go out there and play,' he said. 'I think from a performance point of view, we were well off it against Treviso (in a 33-7 defeat), but certainly against Leinster, we showed what we're about. 'Going into this part of the season, you definitely want to be at your best and we've maybe not hit those straps yet, but hopefully we've left it until the right time.' Glasgow announced on Tuesday that Sebastian Cancelliere, JP du Preez, Sean Kennedy and Facundo Cordero would be leaving the club this summer along with Henco Venter, Tom Jordan and Jack Mann, whose impending moves to Brive, Bristol and Gloucester respectively had already been confirmed earlier in the season. Glasgow will have to 'do it hard way' to win URC

George Horne says Glasgow Warriors will have to "do it the hard way" all over again if they are to retain their United Rugby Championship are chasing a second-place finish in the regular season behind Leinster, the reward for which would be a potential home semi-final in addition to a home quarter-final, which they have already a 26-19 defeat at home to the Bulls on Friday night saw the South Africans close to within a point of Glasgow in the URC face tough away matches at Benetton and Leinster in their final two matches, with the Bulls having a more favourable run-in with home matches against Cardiff and Smith's side produced fantastic away play-off wins over Munster and Bulls en route to winning the title last season, and Horne believes they are capable of more end-of-season heroics."It's still in our hands," Horne told BBC Scotland."We're still ahead (of Bulls) in the table, but we're going to have to keep getting better coming into the last two games."You would back Bulls to win both their games at home, so we're going to have to do it the hard way. We've got a bit of experience doing that now, but that counts for nothing this year."We're just going to have to knuckle down and just go out and give it everything. We're going to probably need 10 points from the last two games."

George Horne has signed a new contract with Glasgow Warriors just days after becoming the club's record try 29-year-old scored Warriors' fourth try in Saturday's 42-0 win over Lions to take his club total to 55, which saw him overtake DTH van der Merwe as the United Rugby Championship club's record try scrum-half says it was an easy decision to sign a new contract at "exciting" Glasgow Warriors, with the club announcing he he signed on "for the foreseeable future"."That's the main thing, everyone's been so delighted for me, a lot of congratulations online and stuff, so it's been nice to see," he said."The boys have been great, they recognised it after the game. I'm just thankful to play in a team that gets me on the end of a lot of tries, it's been a cool couple of days."[I've] Just signed up for another couple of years here, and I think I said after the game, I'm really proud to represent Glasgow, the club and the city as well and obviously delighted to be staying on."It's a club where I've played my whole professional career at, I love being part of it - the boys, the backroom staff, everyone involved with the club - it's a great place to come into work every day."Obviously, coming off the back of last year, we're in a pretty good place, but we're desperate to achieve more. It's an exciting club to be a part of at the moment, and I can't wait to see what the rest of this year and the next couple of years have in store."
