Myrtle Beach officials talk CCMF safety protocols after Ocean Boulevard violence

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Myrtle Beach officials held a Carolina Country Music Fest news conference on Monday, after some residents and visitors expressed safety concerns with recent gun-related crimes on Ocean Boulevard. City officials say more than 30,000 people attended each day of CCMF in 2024. The event also brought $50 million to Myrtle Beach. Officials say to keep the event successful, they must keep people safe. 'You'll see several safety features throughout the venue, such as fencing, hydro-barricades, and meridian vehicle barriers will be installed tomorrow,' George Johnson, Myrtle Beach Special Events and Police Master Corporal, said. 'These are all in place to help guide traffic, protect concertgoers, and maintain a secure environment.' The Myrtle Beach Fire Department says dehydration has been the most common medical emergency at CCMF. The department responded to more than 200 heat-related emergencies at last year's festival. Travis Glatki, the city's Emergency Management Coordinator, says that since first responders started treating people at an on-site medical tent in 2022, they decreased the number of transports from CCMF to local hospitals by almost 90%. 'Depending on the time of day, we will feature between five to seven dedicated medical response teams, comprised of certified EMTs and paramedics, stationed exclusively at the event site,' Glatki said. 'This substantial medical presence ensures rapid response capabilities for any health emergency that may arise.' He also says two ambulances will be on standby for anyone who needs hospital care. But with recent gun-related crimes on Ocean Boulevard, some residents and visitors say they are worried about their safety at CCMF. Myrtle Beach police say their staffing and procedures this year will be the same as last year. The police department will still have help from other agencies, but roads around CCMF will have even more barricades this weekend. 'We have reached out not only to our local partners, but also to our federal partners to receive additional assistance,' Johnson said. 'So, for us, all hands will be on deck. We will all be working that weekend to ensure everyone is as safe as possible.' Dana O'Brien, a city Emergency Management Specialist, told News13 that if severe weather forces everyone to evacuate, CCMF officials will let people know through announcements, screen displays, and the CCMF app. 'If lightning or severe weather ever becomes a concern within an eight-mile radius of the event, the grounds will need to be cleared,' O'Brien said. 'So, it's good practice to know your exits and have a plan for where you would seek shelter.' A city spokesperson says 9th Avenue North is the main pedestrian walkway. There are two exits: one on 9th Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, and the other on 9th Avenue and Kings Highway. * * * Skylar Musick is a multimedia journalist at News13. Assembly Brewing Suddenly Closes its Doors on May 11

A beloved craft brewery in Oregon suddenly closed it doors on May 11 after being open for just over six years. The state's first and only Black-owned brewery, Assembly Brewing, which opened in March 2019 with owner and brewer George Johnson, came to an end, according to The New School. Johnson, a Detroit native, brought the region's iconic pizza style with him, and eventually opened a kid-friendly pizza joint while the brewery remained open to those 21 and older. 'After six incredible years, it's hard to put into words the emotions that fill our hearts. This journey has been one of passion, creativity, and community and we are immensely grateful to everyone who has been a part of it!" Johnson said in a statement after the closing. "From our very first brew, we aimed to create a space where friends could come together, share stories, and enjoy exceptional craft beer, booze and Detroit style pizza. We've welcomed countless faces and formed lasting friendships. We hope to cross paths again down the road," he added. "We extend our deepest gratitude to our dedicated staff, loyal customers, and the vibrant community that embraced us. Your support has meant the world to us, we couldn't have done it without you!" Johnson admitted the craft beer industry caused quite a few challenges along the way. "The craft beer industry is dynamic and ever evolving and we navigated through various hurdles, from heightened costs and market fluctuations to the impacts of global events. Each challenge taught us resilience and adaptability. Unfortunately, the hits kept coming and we no longer have a financial cushion to weather the storms ahead," he said while paying tribute to the patrons who populated the brewery in Portland. "Thank you for being a part of our journey. Cheers to new beginnings and the memories we've created together!'

Asheville Christian Academy football hires former NFL player George Johnson as head coach

Asheville Christian Academy has hired former NFL player George Johnson as its new head football coach, the school announced in a news release Thursday. Johnson, a defensive lineman, played nine seasons (2010-18) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints, also will serve as ACA's assistant athletic director. "Coach Johnson is a proven leader of young men through football and relationships," Asheville Christian Academy athletic director Joe Johnson said in a release. "He is a mentor and motivator, helping athletes reach their potential on and off the field. He is innovative and creative and will bring excellent leadership to our athletic program and football team. He has competed, trained, and coached athletes at all levels and is a great fit to our mission at Asheville Christian. Football at Asheville Christian is heading in the right direction with his leadership and our entire athletic program will benefit from his involvement and experience.' Johnson, 37, replaces Rusty Bradley, who left the Lions to accept an offensive coordinator position with Knoxville Catholic in Tennessee to move closer to his parents. The Lions began their football program during the 2020-21 season and are 14-28 over five years. Bradley led the team to a 9-18 record in three seasons, including a 2-4 mark in a 2024 season marred by the effects of Tropical Storm Helene in Swannanoa. Johnson becomes the program's third head coach. Johnson attended Glassboro High School in New Jersey before enrolling at Rutgers, where he played in 51 games over four years, recording 134 tackles, 33 tackles for loss and 13 sacks. After graduating, Johnson went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft before he was signed by Tampa Bay. NCISAA FOOTBALL: Christ School football coach Chad Walker hired at Pace University Prior to his hiring at ACA, Johnson served as the defensive coordinator at Christ School. He has also previously been a head coach in Florida. Three of Western North Carolina's six head football coach openings have now been filled. McDowell, Cherokee and Christ School each have openings remaining. Evan Gerike is the high school sports reporter for the Asheville Citizen Times.
