Coweta County Schools targeted by ‘apparent cyberattack,' incident under investigation
The Coweta County School System announced that its computer network had been targeted in an apparent cyberattack on Friday night. According to the district, the incident is now under investigation by its security partners and was reported to the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency. As a result of the 'intrusion,' the district said some of its network processes 'will be hampered in the coming days, and school system employees have been advised not to access desktop devices while the matter is being investigated.' Milestones Testing will also proceed as planned on Tuesday, officials said. Officials added that it did not appear any personal information was compromised during the reported intrusion, though the investigation is ongoing. Officials said the system was alerted to unauthorized network activity on Friday night around 7 p.m. When the intrusion was found, the IT department and security partners immediately took the system offline to stop the activity and find the source. Now, access to the school system's internal network will be restricted as authorities investigate and monitor the situation. Georgia Gov. Kemp declares State of Emergency ahead of severe weather threat Sunday
Gov. Brian Kemp issued a State of Emergency in anticipation of severe and potentially damaging weather expected to hit the state overnight Saturday into Sunday. The order authorizes the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency to activate the State Operations Center and mobilize any needed resources to address potential impacts. Gov. Kemp stated in a social media post: 'This storm will hit at the worst possible time, as people are heading to or already in bed. Before they retire for the evening, I'm urging everyone to be prepared ahead of time and to remain weather aware as long as this system is in the state. Given the uncertainty of this storm and the fact it will move through Georgia overnight, individuals and families should prepare now and make plans to stay safe. Just as we've made all necessary preparations on the state level ahead of the system's arrival, Georgians should get ready now and not wait until the storm is already here.' Gov. Kemp declares state of emergency ahead of severe storms this weekend
Governor Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency across Georgia ahead of severe storms moving in late Saturday night and overnight Sunday. The state of emergency went into effect at Noon on Saturday and runs until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday night. The order allows Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency to begin moving resources to impacted areas as well as establish crews to respond to reports of damage and power outages. Multiple strong tornadoes are possible in the early morning hours of Sunday. During thunderstorms, damaging wind gusts could reach 70 mph or greater, which could bring down trees or power lines. Kemp appoints new GEMA/HS director
ATLANTA (WSAV) — Governor Brian Kemp announced the appointment of the new director of the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) on Wednesday. Lieutenant Colonel Josh Lamb will assume the role of director following the departure of Chris Stallings. 'I'm honored to welcome Lt. Col. Lamb to GEMA/HS and thank him for stepping into this important leadership role that is critical to the safety and recovery of Georgia's communities, especially as we continue to rebuild from Hurricane Helene and other storms,' Kemp said. 'I know Lt. Col. Lamb is committed to that mission and will provide the leadership necessary to ensure our state is prepared to respond to disaster and proactively keep Georgians safe.' Lamb served as assistant commissioner for the Department of Public Safety and has held various leadership positions within the Georgia State Patrol. He has also served as a SWAT team commander and played a key role in major public safety operations, including the 2018 National College Championship Game and Super Bowl LIII, the GEMA press release said. The new director is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has a master's degree in public administration from Columbus State University. 'I am deeply honored to be entrusted with this responsibility of leading GEMA/HS,' said Director Lamb. 'Ensuring the safety, preparedness, and resilience of our state is a mission I take seriously. I look forward to working with Governor Kemp, our state and emergency management partners, and the people of Georgia to strengthen our ability to respond to disasters and protect our communities.'
