Researchers Eyeing Options Beyond US Can Look To This Country

With former US President Donald Trump back in power, the American research community is facing renewed uncertainty. Visa cancellations, abrupt funding cuts, and restrictive policies are pushing scientists and researchers to seek opportunities elsewhere. Amid this exodus, Germany has stepped in as a welcoming alternative-especially through its Max Planck Society. The Max Planck Society, one of the world's leading research networks, has seen a huge surge in applications from US-based researchers for its Spring 2025 intake. Notably, 81 women scientists from the US have applied this year, up from just 25 last year. The rise in applications from the US contrasts with stable numbers from other parts of the world, signalling a significant shift in researcher sentiment. Max Planck Society President Patrick Cramer revealed that nearly half of these new applicants are affiliated with leading US institutions such as Harvard University, Stanford University, MIT, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the University of California system. Funded by the German government, the society comprises 84 research institutes and operates on an annual budget of 2 billion euros. It currently hosts 39 Nobel laureates, and 20 new researcher positions are now open. The exodus of researchers is largely linked to the Trump administration's crackdown on international scholars. A controversial directive sought to ban institutions like Harvard from admitting foreign students. Although a federal court has temporarily blocked this move, the uncertainty has already triggered panic in academic circles. The broader global education and research community has taken notice. High-profile scholars such as Yale historian Timothy Snyder have resigned in protest and relocated to institutions abroad. Anticipating this wave of displaced researchers, Germany has launched a national initiative called "1000 Brains" to expand its research infrastructure and absorb global talent.

UniCredit gains German cartel office nod for Commerzbank stake hike

The German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) has approved UniCredit's plan to increase its direct stake in Commerzbank to 29.99% of its share capital and voting rights. UniCredit remains focused on the second phase of its UniCredit Unlocked strategy, considering Commerzbank an investment with 'economic downside protection'. The bank will only proceed if it meets strict financial metrics and improves its base plan. This enables UniCredit to increase its stake in Commerzbank from its current holding of about 9.5%. Last month, UniCredit received approval from the European Central Bank (ECB) to acquire a stake of up to 29.9% in Commerzbank. The latest approval could pave the way for UniCredit's cross-border banking consolidation in Europe, following a lengthy process. However, significant obstacles remain, as Commerzbank's management, unions, and the German government—its largest shareholder with approximately 12%—oppose the takeover, reported Reuters. Last year, UniCredit revealed it had established a network of financial transactions through derivatives to acquire a 28% stake in Commerzbank, pending regulatory approval, with the goal of ultimately reaching a 29.9% stake. Recently, UniCredit received approval from the ECB and the Bank of Italy to move forward with its takeover of Banco BPM. This acquisition will enable UniCredit to directly control Banco BPM and indirectly oversee other entities within the Banco BPM Group and Anima Group, contingent on the successful completion of their public exchange offer. UN: Infrastructure Project in Anbar and Sinjar Enters Fourth Phase

Baghdad - INA The United Nations confirmed on Thursday that the Infrastructure Reinforcement Project in Anbar and Sinjar has entered its fourth phase. While noting that it will contribute to the rehabilitation of 260 housing units, it identified development and reconstruction priorities and the provision of basic services to citizens. The Country Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services, Anil Jandrika, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "There are approximately 466,000 people from Sinjar, most of whom have lost their homes. Therefore, an initiative has been launched to restore life to those areas, funded by the German government." He added that "the project targets minorities, but it faces many challenges, including the difficult terrain and the complexities surrounding it, as well as the large number of returnees living in harsh conditions." He explained that "a third of the displaced families have been unable to return due to the difficult conditions." Jandrika pointed out that "the return phase began in 2020, when the United Nations assessed the situation and services began to gradually return. Basic needs were identified, particularly in the areas of development and reconstruction, the provision of drinking water, sanitation services, schools, and power plants, and connecting them to the national electricity grid to restore electricity supply to the areas." He explained that "strengthening the infrastructure in Sinjar aims to improve the standard of living of citizens, rehabilitate 260 housing units, create a sustainable environment, and improve the level of services provided." He noted that "this new phase, funded by the German government, focuses on Sinjar after previous phases included both Anbar and Sinjar." For his part, the Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy in Iraq, Roland Westbe, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), "The signing of the launch of the fourth phase of the project represents another sign of success in the cooperation between the German government, the German Development Agency, and the United Nations Office for Project Services, which is of paramount importance." He added, "The genocide and massacres committed by ISIS terrorist gangs against the Yazidis in Sinjar, and the destruction witnessed in Mosul, all led to massive infrastructure losses and the killing of thousands of innocent people.". Westbe explained, "This phase will build on the successes achieved in the previous three phases, in cooperation with the Iraqi government, and we look forward to achieving tangible progress that will contribute to the return of normal life in these areas."

Germany central to Russian LNG imports, environmentalists say

The state-owned German energy company SEFE continues to play a central role in the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia into the European Union, according to analysis released on Tuesday. A report by Environmental Action Germany and other environmental organizations found that SEFE imported more than six times as much LNG into the EU in 2024, compared to 2023. Based on data provided by trade intelligence company Kpler, 5.66 billion cubic metres of LNG imported by SEFE arrived in Dunkirk, France, on the English Channel. Since Moscow launched its war on Ukraine in February 2022, EU countries banned imports of coal and, with some exemptions, crude oil from Russia and pledged to reduce other fossil fuel imports. According to the EU Commission, a total of 20 billion cubic metres of Russian LNG were imported in 2024, compared to 18 billion in 2023. Most of the liquefied natural gas in the EU originates from the US, according to the Brussels-based commission. Kpler's data suggests it was nearly 22 billion cubic metres in 2024, compared to 18.41 billion cubic metres in 2023. SEFE is a former subsidiary of the Russian energy group Gazprom, which is now owned by the German government. The abbreviation stands for "Securing Energy for Europe." As Europe had not placed sanctions on the imports of Russian LNG, there was no legal basis for cancelling or suspending an existing contract, SEFE said. The LNG import in Dunkirk are sold at two trading venues in France and Belgium, SEFE said. "SEFE does not deliver Russian LNG to Germany nor has it attempted to deliver it there," the company said.
