‘It's remarkable how far we've come': Taking transit celebrations on the road

(Gerry Dewan/CTV News London) What better way to celebrate 150 years of a transit service than by taking the festivities on the road? Members of the LTC team were at the new transfer station at Wellington Street and King Street from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon. They were out there handing out cake and commemorative stickers to formally kick-off a year of transit service celebrations. LTC spokesperson Caroline Roy was part of the team handing out goodies. Roy told CTV News the transit service continues to go through remarkable changes. 'We started off in 1875 with a horse drawn carriage down Dundas and grew from there,' said Roy. (Gerry Dewan/CTV News London) Roy said the biggest evolution has been in recent years with the introduction of the Bus Rapid Transit service, which includes dedicated bus lanes and priority traffic signals to help improve service times. The roving celebrations will be visiting various shopping centres throughout the rest of the week: Tuesday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Cherryhill Mall food court Tuesday, May 27 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Masonville Place transit terminal Wednesday, May 28 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at White Oaks Mall transit stop Thursday, May 29 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Argyle Mall transit terminal Friday, May 30 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Westmount Mall transit terminal According to LTC, the service carried 158,154 riders in its first year and now carries 19.2 million people annually. The service is planning celebration events throughout its anniversary year.
