Flags mark graves of veterans in Boardman ahead of Memorial Day

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Memorial Day weekend is underway and people all across the Valley are paying their respects to our veterans. On Friday morning, dozens of volunteers gathered at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boardman to place American flags on the graves of military veterans. This is just one of 50 cemeteries in Mahoning County to have graves decorated before Monday. The group placed more than 2,000 flags and cleaned up some resting spots as well. The flags will stay in place until after the Fourth of July when volunteers will return to gather them. Those flags will be properly retired. Gerry Ricciutti contributed to this report. Humane agents find 56 cats in Boardman home

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — Humane agents rescued 56 cats from what they described as a hoarding situation in Boardman. The cats were taken from a home on Glenwood Avenue on Tuesday afternoon. The cats are now in the care of Animal Charity. According to a post on Animal Charity's Facebook page, the shelter is now in 'extreme need' of various items, including clumping cat litter, litter boxes and Purina Cat Chow. A full list is on the agency's page. The agency also urges people to reach out if they notice a friend, neighbor or family member is struggling with an inability to care for too many animals. Hoarding is often due to underlying mental health issues, and while most people have good intentions, it can quickly become overwhelming and unsafe, according to the agency. Large manhunt result of domestic threat: Report

BEAVER TWP., Ohio (WKBN) — A large police presence in Beaver Township Friday was the result of a domestic incident that turned into an hours-long manhunt for the alleged suspect. Police were called around 4 a.m. Friday to the Davis Motel for reports of a woman who ran from a domestic violence situation involving a knife. The woman ran from the motel to a nearby gas station, where she told officers an argument between herself and a man had turned violent, saying he pinned her to the ground, put a knife to her throat and threatened her. She told police she was able to break free — but not before the man bit her hard enough to leave a bruise — and then ran. Additional officers responded to the motel on Market Street where the alleged assault took place, but the assailant, whose name is redacted in police reports, was no longer there. Reports state he then began texting the victim, stating he was running and not going back to jail. The victim told police the man was recently released from prison, where he was incarcerated for sex crimes, reports state. An anonymous tipster then got in contact with police, claiming the suspect had texted pictures of himself in a wooded area with his wrist cut open, stating he was 'laying in a field to die.' Reports state the suspect also claimed to have taken fentanyl. This sparked an extensive search to locate the man, covering multiple open fields and wooded areas around the motel. While police tried to trace a location from the man's phone, they had little luck, stating the phone was shut off after he sent the previous texts. The search for the man spanned many hours, stretching into the afternoon. After another attempt at tracing the man's phone, reports state it appeared to be back near the motel. Police converged on the area with extra caution, stating in reports that the man had threatened police and mentioned 'performing suicide by cop.' The suspect was spotted inside a kitchenette-type area in the office of the motel and was told to come out with his hands up. Rather than obey police commands, the man stepped behind a stool, partially concealing himself from view. Police then drew their firearms, shouting for the man to surrender peacefully, but reports state he became argumentative and continued to resist. Officers, along with a K-9, then began to advance, at which point the man surrendered, albeit with some continued verbal and physical resistance. Reports state that while escorting the man from the building, he made multiple comments about wanting to die and complained about his earlier suicide attempt failing. Police noted deep gashes on his wrists. When asked what drugs the man had taken so that he could receive treatment, reports state he replied that he had taken fentanyl, along with a number of pills. Emergency crews arrived to care for the man. At the time of this report, it is not stated if he is facing charges. Gerry Ricciutti contributed to this report. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
