7 recaptured after Bahawalnagar jailbreak

The suspects of a notorious dacoit gang who had escaped from the CIA police station lockup in Bahawalnagar were re-arrested after a search operation. Three of the seven fugitives were apprehended the same night, while the remaining four were captured three days later. The suspects, wanted for multiple cases of robbery and theft, had recently been detained under case number 122/25, section 395 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) in Bakshan Khan. However, instead of being held legally, they were allegedly kept in illegal custody at the CIA police station for ten days. Even after their re-arrest, police have remained tight-lipped about their identities, raising suspicions about the legitimacy of their capture. The escape occurred on Chand Raat, the night before Eid, when the in-charge of the CIA police station had left for home, leaving only two constables, Abdullah and Ghaffar, on duty. However, one of them, Constable Abdullah, was absent, leaving just Constable Ghaffar to guard the entire facility. Taking advantage of the lapse in security, the suspects managed to break out of the lockup and flee. Upon learning of the escape, Bahawalnagar police launched a search operation involving personnel from three different police stations. A police spokesperson confirmed that while three suspects were re-arrested the same night, the remaining four were caught after a three-day manhunt. Senior police officials have taken strict notice of the escape, ordering SDPO Chishtian Circle to conduct a thorough investigation. Preliminary findings highlight negligence on the part of the CIA police station in-charge and security lapses. Sources indicate that disciplinary action is expected against those responsible for the oversight. The escape and subsequent re-arrest of the suspects have exacerbated concerns over rising crime in Bahawalnagar. In the jurisdiction of Manchanabad police, near Pakpattan district, locals report being terrorized by dacoits who openly demand extortion. The gang allegedly uses gunfire and other threats to intimidate residents into compliance. Disturbing video footage from affected areas shows helpless citizens pleading for protection, painting a picture of lawlessness. Meanwhile, in Bahawalnagar city, incidents of violent crime continue to rise. On Chishtian Road, a citizen was assaulted and robbed of cash. Another robbery on Haroonabad Road left a victim without his belongings. In Mohalla Farooqabad, a resident was physically attacked during a mugging. The recent transfer of Bahawalnagar's District Police Officer (DPO) has further shaken public confidence. Since the new DPO's appointment, crime rates have surged, with station house officers (SHOs) and other officials allegedly engaging in bribery instead of tackling criminal activities. In 2025 alone, Bahawalnagar has reported over 100 cases of robbery and mugging, more than 200 motorcycle thefts, and over 100 incidents of livestock and mobile phone theft. Citizens attending open courts to lodge complaints face humiliation at the hands of bureaucratic mafias, who create hurdles instead of facilitating justice. Residents claim that these sessions are held merely for photo ops, with no real intention of addressing public grievances. Insiders reveal that a powerful group of officials, stationed in the District DPO office for years, wields considerable influence over police affairs. This entrenched lobby allegedly manipulates every incoming DPO, preventing genuine reform efforts and enabling a culture of corruption and inefficiency.

How ‘Homes That Never Sleep' Makes Everyday Objects Tell a Story

How 'Homes That Never Sleep' Makes Everyday Objects Tell a Story What if the objects that fill our homes could tell stories? That's the question at the heart of Art D'Egypte's newest exhibition, 'Homes That Never Sleep'. Running until February 26th at Maison 69 in New Cairo, the exhibition centres around familiar domestic items as they are turned into layered reflections on personal and collective memory. 'Often, we take household items for granted, but this exhibition highlights how they silently witness and adapt to the constant rhythms of life, whether it's moments of joy, struggle or resilience,' Nadine Abdel Ghaffar, Founder of Art D'Egypte/CulturVator, tells CairoScene. 'By recontextualising these objects, the exhibition encourages visitors to see them not just as static pieces of décor, but as active participants in our daily narratives.' The exhibition marks a collaboration with the Forset Hayah Foundation to raise funds for the medical treatments of children with rare diseases. For art enthusiasts and collectors, pieces acquired from the collection will mean not just taking home art, but contributing to life-saving care. 'Integrating Forset Hayah into 'Homes That Never Sleep' was a deeply intentional decision. The name itself reflects the reality of families who stay up at night caring for a sick child - so one can only imagine the endless nights when a child has a rare disease with no clear cure or treatment,' Ghaffar says. 'This collaboration is about standing in solidarity with these families and supporting an organisation that makes a real difference.' The community-oriented approach is a recurring theme for Art D'Egypte, known for its site-specific contemporary art exhibitions across the region. From repurposed chairs to reimagined frames, each installation challenges viewers to reflect not only on the stories that the daily items in our homes might tell about us, but how they speak to a larger narrative of memory and shared human experience. The exhibition showcases works by Pance Ahmed, Al Shaimaa Darwish, Omar Senada, Ahmed Shaaban, Heba Tarek, Jamal Bassiouni, Eman Abdou, Karim El Hayawan, Mahmoud Hamdi, Agnes Michalczyk, Aya El Fallah, Akram El Halwagy, Hossam Zaki, Fatma Abo Doma, Dina Fahmy El Rouby, Hesham Abdel Moaty, Yara Hatem, Ahmed Farid, Shahd Osman, Iman El Gammal, Yara Hassan, Amal El Gindi, and Mahmoud Bakar.

Egypt, South Korea launch $9mln initiative to enhance emergency medical services

Egypt - Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, has met South Korean Ambassador to Egypt, Kim Yonghyon, to discuss bilateral cooperation in healthcare, human resource development, and South Korea's biomedical investments. A key outcome of the meeting was the launch of a $9m grant project aimed at improving emergency medical services in Upper Egypt, particularly in the Nag Hammady and Luxor region. This initiative aligns with Korea's ongoing railway signal modernization projects, including the Nag Hammady–Luxor Corridor Signaling System Modernization Project (active since 2021) and the upcoming second-phase Luxor–High Dam Corridor project. The new healthcare initiative seeks to enhance emergency response capacity for railway-related accidents and other medical emergencies. Starting next year, the project will introduce mobile clinics, upgrade emergency rooms, provide advanced medical equipment, and offer specialized training for emergency medical personnel. These measures aim to improve healthcare accessibility and strengthen Egypt's overall emergency response, particularly in rural areas. During the meeting, Ambassador Kim also highlighted the Dr. LEE Jong-wook Fellowship Program, named after the former WHO Director-General, and invited Egyptian healthcare professionals to participate. Organized by the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH), the program has trained 1,500 professionals from 30 countries since 2007, offering courses on clinical expertise and health policy. This year marks Egypt's first participation, focusing on infectious disease response and health policy leadership. Further strengthening Korea-Egypt biomedical collaboration, Ambassador Kim announced a joint $10 million investment by Korea's ChoonAng Vaccine Lab (CAVAC) and Egypt's Global Pharmaceutical Industries (GPI) to establish a poultry vaccine production facility in Al-Sadat City's Industrial Polaris Area. Set for completion by June, the facility will operate under an OEM model, contributing to Egypt's export market. Ambassador Kim also invited Deputy Prime Minister Ghaffar to a reception on April 13 celebrating 30 years of diplomatic relations. The accompanying economic conference will serve as a platform to discuss biomedical and healthcare cooperation, underscoring Egypt's growing role as a medical hub in the Middle East and Africa. As part of broader efforts to boost Korea-Egypt healthcare collaboration, KOTRA's Egypt office is organizing a Korean Biomedical Business Delegation visit in September. The delegation will engage in B2B meetings with Egyptian companies to foster investment and expand healthcare partnerships. Additionally, Ambassador Kim proposed B2G discussions with Egypt's Ministry of Health, including a policy seminar on key healthcare initiatives. Deputy Prime Minister Ghaffar welcomed these initiatives and reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Korea. Both sides also explored potential collaboration on health insurance policy development to support Egypt's Universal Health Coverage goals.
