Abu Dhabi University hosts 12th Undergraduate Research and Innovation Competition

31 May 2025 21:34 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)Under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, Abu Dhabi University (ADU) hosted the 12th edition of the Undergraduate Research and Innovation Competition (URIC) at its main campus in Abu Dhabi. For the third consecutive year, the event was sponsored by RTX, demonstrating the company's ongoing commitment to supporting STEM education and fostering innovation in the UAE and beyond. The hybrid annual event brought together exceptional undergraduate talent from around the world to present breakthrough research and creative solutions across 27 academic disciplines, including engineering, business, education, law, and health year's competition drew 650 research submissions from approximately 1,300 students representing 105 universities across 14 countries, reaffirming URIC's position as the largest undergraduate research platform in the GCC and MENA event celebrated a diverse range of pioneering projects, including innovations in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Biomedical Engineering and Clinical Sciences, Cybersecurity, Finance, Fintech, E-commerce, and Digital Marketing, Sustainable and Renewable Energy, highlighting the breadth and depth of innovation led by undergraduate Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University, said: 'URIC continues to shine a spotlight on the ingenuity and research excellence of our youth. At ADU, we are deeply committed to fostering a culture of discovery that empowers students to drive meaningful change. Through initiatives like URIC, we bridge academia with real-world impact - nurturing young innovators who will shape the UAE's future as a knowledge-based, sustainable economy. The competition aligns closely with the UAE's vision to empower emerging talent, foster knowledge creation, and build a more inclusive and sustainable future. In 2024, URIC attracted nearly 600 research submissions spanning 27 disciplines, with participation from 1,400 students representing 78 universities across 16 countries in the MENA region and beyond. Delivered in a hybrid format, the competition continues to grow its global reach while cultivating a vibrant platform for students to innovate, collaborate, and lead.

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) successfully hosted the second edition of the International Conference on Global Sustainable Development (ICGSD 2025) on May 23–24 at its Dubai campus. Marking the conference's first edition in the region, the event convened leading academic scientists, researchers, policymakers, and industry experts from ten countries to exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions to today's most pressing sustainability in collaboration with Digambarrao Bindu College and Acadivate, the premier interdisciplinary conference brought together more than 130 global experts for high-impact discussions and cross-sector collaboration spanning health, business, environment, technology, and social sciences. Through a dynamic agenda of plenary sessions, panel debates, and over 100 research presentations, ICGSD 2025 explored critical themes including climate change, renewable energy, social justice, AI in education, and sustainable development practices. From Console To Classroom: Abu Dhabi Unveils Region's First Dual-Certified Video Game Design Degree

In a major move to boost Abu Dhabi's rising stature in the global gaming industry, the region's first dual-certified bachelor of arts degree programme in video game design will be introduced in the upcoming academic year at Abu Dhabi University (ADU). The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT – Abu Dhabi), ADU, and Rubika signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the programme. Saeed Ali Al Fazari, Director of Strategic Affairs at DCT Abu Dhabi; Prof Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University; and Dr Stephane Andre, CEO of Rubika, were the signatories. 'This agreement to launch the region's first bachelor of arts degree in game design aligns with DCT – Abu Dhabi's strategic priorities to elevate culture and creative industries in the emirate, as well as to inspire and empower youth,' Al Fazari said. 'By ensuring that aspiring game designers have access to world-class education and practical experience, we are enabling the growth of the gaming sector, regionally and globally, developing a highly qualified talent pool and positioning them to excel in this dynamic industry, right here in Abu Dhabi.' Internships, scholarships Through Abu Dhabi Gaming, DCT – Abu Dhabi will facilitate deep industry integration by offering structured internships, mentorship programmes, and connections with local game studios. The department will fund up to 140 scholarships over a six-year period to support access and participation in the programme. Rubika, a globally recognised French institution specialising in video game design, animation, and digital arts, will provide academic leadership, curriculum oversight, and faculty training. The school will also enable international exchange opportunities with its global campuses, bringing international best practices to Abu Dhabi. 'Our strategy is to establish ourselves in regions with a strong cultural heritage. By leveraging their creativity, the students in our programmes are encouraged to draw from their own cultural roots to contribute to the enrichment of global culture through video games and animated films,' Dr Andre noted. From August ADU will host the programme on campus and enrolment is set to begin in August. 'This partnership reflects our commitment to aligning education with emerging industry needs. By launching the region's first dual-certified game design degree, we're giving students access to specialised training that opens up career opportunities, both in the UAE and internationally,' Prof Aouad underlined.
