Youm-e-Takbeer: JI chief pays tributes to Dr A Q Khan

ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman Wednesday paying glowing tributes to the services rendered by Dr Abdul Qadeer (AQ) Khan, said Pakistan's nuclear capability, developed under the leadership of Dr Khan, is an unforgettable gift to the nation that has empowered Pakistanis to hold their heads high globally. JI chief said this here during JI leadership's visit to the grave of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan for offering prayers on the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer. Hafiz stressed that the country must not be intimidated by global powers seeking to divide and weaken Pakistan. 'If Modi fires bullets, we will respond with the Ghauri missile,' he declared. Hafiz said the youth must reject despair and unite against those spreading hopelessness and division. 'This country is ours, and we are its protectors. We still have to liberate Kashmir,' he stated, adding that any dialogue with India must include Kashmir on the agenda, otherwise 'there should be no talks at all.' Recalling the events of 1998, Rehman said that after India conducted nuclear tests, anxiety spread across Pakistan. 'While the government hesitated due to international pressure and threats of sanctions, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba held rallies across the country to press the government to respond,' he said. 'On May 28, Pakistan conducted nuclear tests and became invincible.' He noted that while major global powers continue to expand their nuclear arsenals, it was Dr Khan and his team who ensured Pakistan's place among the nuclear powers. 'Today, we are here to remember and honour this national hero, whose contributions made Pakistan strong and respected worldwide,' he said. Criticizing India, Hafiz said that despite never accepting Pakistan's existence, India has faced consistent defeat. 'When India bombed mosques and civilian areas, we responded strongly. The jets India boasted about were shot down now they're debating whether four Rafales fell or six.' He mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speeches as empty bravado aimed at misleading the Indian public. 'Modi is bragging, while 680 million Indians still lack access to basic sanitation,' he said. 'The more he blusters, the fewer votes he'll get.' Rehman also condemned India's treatment of minorities, especially Muslims, Dalits, and Sikhs. 'India is committing atrocities under the guise of Hindutva. The Sikh movement is gaining momentum, and India has lost credibility by targeting Sikhs in countries like the US and Canada.' On the situation in Kashmir, he decried the brutal violations of human rights and said India of trying to turn the Muslim majority into a minority. 'This is terrorism and the world must take a stand,' he said. 'Israel, India's close ally, is committing atrocities against children in Palestine. After the Pahalgam incident, Israel even assisted India.' He criticised the U.S. for its silence during Indian aggression against Pakistan, only stepping in for ceasefire talks once Pakistan retaliated. 'If peace is to be achieved, India must withdraw its forces from Kashmir and let Kashmiris exercise their right to self-determination.' Lashing out at the government's handling of Youm-e-Takbeer celebrations, Rehman condemned the exclusion of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan from official advertisements, saying the ruling PML-N prioritised images of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his family. 'It's shameful,' he said, noting that even former rulers did not attend the national hero's funeral. Responding to a question, he called the release of Jamaat-e-Islami's Dr Azhar by Bangladesh's Supreme Court a victory for justice. He urged the government to foster national unity and resolve the crises in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

'Primary adversary, ancillary problem': 5 things US intel report says about India's security threat from China, Pak

The US intel report has outlined that Pakistan continues to see India as a major threat and is upgrading its military and nuclear capabilities with help from China. The report also says that India's growing defence focus with the 'Made in India' initiative. Here are five key takeaways from the report read more Pakistani military trucks carry the long range nuclear-capable surface-to-surface 'Ghauri' ballistic missile during the National Day parade in Islamabad, Pakistan, March 23, 2005. File Image/Reuters The US Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), in its 'World Threat Assessment' report report, said Pakistan sees India as a serious threat and will continue efforts to modernise its military, including the development of tactical nuclear weapons, to counter India's stronger conventional forces. The DIA's World Threat Assessment report mentions India's Operation Sindoor against terror groups in Pakistan and the resulting rise in tensions. It adds that Prime Minister Modi's defence priorities are likely to focus on demonstrating global leadership, countering China, and enhancing India's military capabilities. India views China as its primary threat, while seeing Pakistan as a lesser security concern, despite recent cross-border clashes. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Pakistan is upgrading its nuclear weapons with assistance from China, which provides both military and economic support, while continuing to consider India its main threat, the report notes. It adds that Pakistan's military is expected to focus on border tensions—particularly with India—and will continue to modernise its nuclear arsenal over the coming year. 'Pakistan is modernising its nuclear arsenal and maintaining the security of its nuclear materials and nuclear command and control. Pakistan almost certainly procures WMD-applicable goods from foreign suppliers and intermediaries,' the report states. India is also strengthening defence ties with countries in the Indian Ocean region to counter China's growing influence and to bolster its global standing, according to the intelligence report. This effort includes joint military exercises, training programmes, arms sales, and intelligence sharing with regional partners. The report says India and China have agreed to withdraw troops from two remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh, easing tensions that have persisted since 2020. However, the long-standing border dispute remains unresolved. India is further pushing its 'Made in India' initiative to build a stronger domestic defence industry, reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, and modernise its military. Recent moves include tests of nuclear-capable Agni missiles and the commissioning of its second nuclear-powered submarine. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD This is a developing story.

World should take note of Pak's nuclear bombs

As I complete this article on Sunday morning, a tense peace prevails on the Northern and Western borders of the country, but clouds of tension, uncertainty, and threat still haunt the western border regions of the country. People heaved a sigh of relief when on Saturday evening, a ceasefire was announced between India and Pakistan. However, the relief was short-lived as, within a few hours, Pakistani drones violated the ceasefire. Also Read | Indian drone makers see demand opportunity in border tensions, boost production I hope the situation normalises quickly. India's position, like always, is crystal clear. We don't want a war. Our fight isn't against a nation or its people, but a campaign against terrorism. The terrorists who have the blood of our citizens on their hands are now seeking refuge in their sanctuaries in Pakistan. We want to hunt them down and their masters who conspired and then gunned down 26 Indian citizens in Baisaran valley of Pahalgam, singling them out based on their religion. Their annihilation is our holy duty. New Delhi, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is pursuing this path with single-minded focus. Also Read | India to boost production of combat medicines While the Indian armed forces are conducting pinpoint operations, the Pakistani army is indulging in indiscriminate attacks across the residential areas, showing an opposite behaviour. I saw on a foreign TV channel that the Pakistani forces were lustily cheering religious slogans after firing every missile. They haven't been told that religion is meant to bring people together and not to tear them asunder. The Pakistani ruling elite, too, is beset by the same problem. Have a look at the names of their missiles – Ghazni, Ghauri, Abdali, etc. How can they forget that when these conquers from Central Asia entered India the first place they plundered, raped and ravaged was the land which we today call Pakistan. It's a tragedy that the rulers of Pakistan have been betraying every overture offered to them. Also Read | Insurance for RE, hydro projects in border states to rise amid conflict You may remember Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He once pompously claimed that Pakistan would fight with India for a thousand years. His friend turned blood-thirsty foe, General Zia-ul-Haq, wanted to bleed and weaken India with a thousand cuts. Today, that grandiose plan is biting Pakistan back. The expensive drones and missiles it fires on Indian targets are intercepted and destroyed mid-air. Indulging in such costly behaviour when within their country, people are ready to murder each other for a sack of flour, is not suicide; then what is it? Under the watchful eye of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our armed forces have conducted successful attacks on various Pakistani installations with precision and a well-thought-out strategy. With the help of attacks on terror camps and Pakistan's military bases, India has sent a clear message to the global audience that we don't want war. We can and do exercise restraint, but we will not tolerate any attack on us. New Delhi's position is clear: our fight is against terrorism and not with any country. I am sure that in the future, students of military science will study with pride how step by step India evolved a new security doctrine, by avenging Uri, Balakot, and the actions of May 2025. If Pakistan doesn't mend its ways at this juncture, the consequences would be dire. India will not be cowed down by the nuclear threats spewed by the Pakistani politicians or generals sitting in Rawalpindi. People in India and around the world are now sick and tired of listening to this loose talk for the last three decades. I think this is the point where the comity of nations will have to shed their interests and considerations and address a fundamental issue that should such an irresponsible nation be allowed to have nuclear weapons? Never forget that Pakistan created its nuclear weapon with the financial aid provided by Libya and a few other Gulf States. Bhutto and his aids would always claim that the 'Islamic world' needs its own 'atom bomb'. I don't want to look at terrorism and people through the prism of a religion, but the truth can't be brushed under the carpet. Israel had plans to blow up the Pakistani nuclear plant in Kahuta as early as the late 1970s and early 1980s. However, General Zia got wind of it thanks to the stupidity of some prominent Indian political leaders, and the operations had to be aborted. Tel Aviv still maintains its right to eliminate these facilities. On October 11, 2023, Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in an interview categorically said Israel's paramount mission is to stop any radical Islamic government from building or acquiring nuclear weapons or letting it fall into the hands of such forces. Their number one target is Iran, and the second one is Pakistan. Right now, fear pervades the top military brass in Pakistan that after establishing a decisive dominance over Hamas and removing Assad from Syria, it would now be easy for the 'Zionist-Christian coalition' to subdue Iran this year. Once they achieve their goal, Pakistan would be the next target. Pentagon strategist believe the way Taliban tendencies are rearing their head in Pakistani society doesn't augur well for its future. If in such a scenario their political system collapses, then there is every chance that Mr Bhutto's dream of an 'Islamic bomb' will become a reality. This does lead to an urgent need for the world to sit and take a call on Pakistan's nuclear assets and review its policies. The country has been fomenting trouble in India from behind the nuclear shield. The country that can offer sanctuary to Osama bin Laden, whose citizens have been found indulging in terror activities around the world, can't be left to plot mayhem by hiding behind its nuclear shield. It would be better if the world awakens to this threat immediately. Shashi Shekhar is editor-in-chief, Hindustan. Views are personal.

JUI-F to hold 'Defence of Pakistan and Gaza Martyrs March'

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has announced that the Gaza Martyrs Million March, scheduled for today in Peshawar and on May 15 in Quetta, will now be held under the banner of 'Defence of Pakistan and Gaza Martyrs Million March.' According to the JUI-F's central spokesperson, Aslam Ghauri, massive rallies will take place today (Sunday) in Peshawar and on May 15 in Quetta under the new title. Preparations for the Peshawar March have been completed, and participants from across the province—devotees of Islam and patriots alike—are expected to attend in large numbers. Ghauri stated that JUI-F workers would play a frontline role in the defence of Islam and Pakistan. He emphasized that the march would serve as a milestone in opposition to the India-Israel alliance. The party has also declared full support for the 'Operation Al-Aqsa Flood' (Bunyan Marsous), pledging all possible moral and financial assistance. "The people of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, known for their courage and faith, are urged to participate passionately", he said. The JUI-F reiterated its backing of every state decision against Israel and India and emphasized that the Million March would symbolize national solidarity with the Pakistan Armed Forces. Ghauri warned that the recklessness of Netanyahu and Modi could bring destruction to the region. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman is expected to deliver a special address at the march and announce the party's future strategy.
