Naresh Meena acquitted in '04 case of obstructing govt work
1 2 Jaipur: A city court Thursday acquitted former Rajasthan University student leader Naresh Meena in a 20-year-old case of obstructing govt work, citing insufficient evidence. The case dates back to Aug 5, 2004, when Meena allegedly led a group attempting to force their way toward a stage during a Ghoomar programme at the university campus. According to police, the incident resulted in violence when a stone thrown from the crowd injured a constable's eye at the women's gate. Trial court's presiding officer Khushoo Parihar delivered the verdict, highlighting the prosecution's failure to present any independent witnesses. Notably, the injured police constable, Man Singh, did not appear to testify during the court proceedings. "The accused is acquitted due to insufficient evidence provided by the prosecution," Parihar stated in her order. Meena, who contested the by-elections in Deoli-Uniara assembly constituency of Tonk district in 2024, was brought to the court from Tonk Central Jail, where he is currently imprisoned under separate charges. He was arrested earlier last year for allegedly disrupting peace and assaulting an SDM during the assembly bypoll.

Naresh Meena acquitted in 20-year-old case, Jaipur court cites lack of evidence
Jaipur: Independent candidate from the Deoli-Uniara assembly by-election in Rajasthan, Naresh Meena, was acquitted on Thursday by the Jaipur Metropolitan court in a 20-year-old case related to obstruction of government work. The court cited a lack of evidence and procedural lapses as reasons for the acquittal. Presiding Judge Khushboo Parihar noted that the prosecution failed to present any independent witnesses, and the injured constable who lodged the original complaint did not appear in court to testify. The case dates back to August 5, 2004, when Meena and his associates were accused of attempting to forcibly reach the stage during a Ghoomar cultural event held at a university campus in Jaipur. According to the prosecution, around 1 p.m., Constable Mansingh and other police personnel were posted at the women's gate when Meena, along with Man Singh Meena and others, allegedly tried to break through the barricade. The group reportedly resisted police efforts and incited a crowd, resulting in a stone being thrown from the gathering. A constable sustained an eye injury due to the incident, and a case was subsequently registered at Gandhi Nagar Police Station under charges of obstruction of duty and incitement of violence. However, during the trial, Meena's lawyer, Advocate Abdul Wahid Naqvi, argued that the prosecution relied solely on testimonies from police personnel, without presenting any neutral or independent witnesses, despite the event being held in a public, crowded setting. He further highlighted key procedural deficiencies, including the failure to produce a site map, the absence of a medical examination report for the injured constable, and the lack of entries in the police station diary -- all of which are required under Supreme Court guidelines. The judge, observing these omissions and the absence of the complainant's testimony, concluded that the prosecution had failed to establish the charges beyond reasonable doubt. As a result, Naresh Meena was acquitted. Meena, currently lodged in Tonk Central Jail in connection with other criminal cases -- including an alleged assault on an SDM during the by-election campaign -- was brought to Jaipur under police escort for the hearing.

Vances have an immersive Raj experience at Amber Fort
Jaipur: Bejewelled elephants, folk artistes draped in traditional Rajputi and Kalbelia dresses, and musicians, along with vibrant rangolis, created a ceremonial atmosphere as they greeted US Vice President JD Vance , his wife Usha, and their three children – Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel – Tuesday morning at the Amber Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site . Inside the 16th-century hill fort, the Vances visited Mansingh Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Khush Niwas, and Diwan-e-Aam, spending almost an hour and a half before heading back to their hotel in the city, 11km away. At the fort, chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and deputy CM Diya Kumari welcomed the Vances amidst a vibrant air of the welcome drum beating and melodious sound of the shehnai. As they walked on the red carpet to the fort, folk artistes performing Ghoomar, Kalbelia, and Kachi Ghodi dances welcomed them. The Vice President paused and took his time to thank them graciously. Madan Singh Shekhawat, one of the three tour guides assigned to escort the family during the visit, said, "Most visitors, including the state dignitaries, to Amber Fort complete the tour in an hour. But JD Vance and his family spent 1.30 hours, which showed that they liked the experience." Vance, along with his children, spent time with the caparisoned elephants Chanda and Pushpa, as they welcomed them. Shekhawat said Vance explained about the elephants to his curious sons. "As the elephants welcomed them with their gestures, Vance took quite a few minutes to have a better look at the animal and explain about it to his sons. He was seen answering a few queries from both children as well," said Shekhawat. Inside the fort, he was welcomed by folk artists playing instruments like Ravanhatta (a stringed instrument), shehnai, and flutes. Officials accompanying the VP in the fort said he seemed to have liked the Sheesh Mahal the most as he spent more time there. "It seemed as if he knew everybody as he waved to and thanked everybody while leaving," Shekhawat said.
