Sony has sold 77.8 million PS5s to date, but expects a downturn due to tariffs

Sony has sold 77.8 million PlayStation 5s since the console first went on sale in 2020 after shipping 2.8 million units in its latest quarter, the company announced. That figure lines up remarkably well with PlayStation 4 sales which hit 79.1 million units in approximately the same amount of time. However, Sony's full year fiscal 2024 PS5 sales of 18.5 million were down compared to the 20.8 million it sold in 2023. Game sales more than made up for that though, rising nine percent and helping push the division's operating income up 43 percent year over year. That was largely due to third-party sales, as first-party sales actually fell a bit. Sony has only released one first-party game so far this year with key titles like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yōtei still to come. Sony doesn't expect this growth to continue, though. The company is predicting a ¥100 billion ($700 million) hit to sales next year due to tariffs, given that most of its sales occur in the US — and the company had already forecast flat revenue for 2025. Another key blow was the delay of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI launch that was just pushed back to May 2026. During its earnings call, Sony said that it was considering "passing on" tariff hikes to consumers, though it didn't mention the PS5 or US specifically. The company has already raised the price of the console in other territories including Europe, but US increases are extremely rare. Sony CEO HIroki Totoki also brought up the possibility of building the PlayStation 5 in the US, saying it's something that "has to be considered going forward." Sony to increase first party games output as PS5 sales continue to fall

As Sony projects a decline in PlayStation 5 console sales over the next year, the company is hoping software will pick up the slack. Sony's first-party line-up for the PlayStation 5 has been an increasing disappointment over the past five years, with standouts like Returnal and Astro Bot, but too few new releases and too many remasters and failed live service experiments. The lack of first-party games is reflected in the company's financial report for the 2024 fiscal year (ending March 31, 2025). As outlined by Sony, first-party software sales dropped to 28.9 million in FY24, a 10.8 million decline from 2023's 39.7 million. While overall game sales were up over last year, at 303.3 million, Sony is expecting an increase in both first and third-party software sales over the 2025 financial year – which seems to indicate it has some surprises up its sleeve. Sony is set to release Ghost of Yōtei and Death Stranding 2: On The Beach in 2025, and according to Sony's definition of the term, the latter does count as first party even though it's not made by one of their internal studios. There are also projects like Bungie's Marathon and the Sony-published Lost Soul Aside, which are both slated for this year and also come under the definition of first party. While Sony will likely increase its first-party sales with these games alone, there's a chance another unannounced project might be lined up for 2025. Earlier this year, rumours claimed a new God Of War game set in Greece is planned for 2025, but nothing has been officially announced yet. It's also perfectly possible that other, current unguessed at, titles could be waiting in the wings. Despite these positive forecasts for software sales, Sony is less optimistic when it comes to hardware. The company is expecting PlayStation 5 sales to drop in the 2025 financial year, which isn't exactly surprising as we're over five years into the console's life cycle (and the next 12 months no longer has GTA 6 as a potential boost). More Trending Over the 2024 fiscal year, PlayStation 5 hardware sales totalled 18.5 million, selling 2.8 million in the last quarter. This is a small drop from the previous year's 20.8 million. This means total PlayStation 5 sales have hit 77.8 million, which is just 1.4 million units behind the PlayStation 4 at the same period in its life. However, whether that means it'll end up with a similar lifetime total, of around 117 million (making it the fifth most successful console of all time), is hard to guess. We'll likely have a better idea of Sony's upcoming software slate over the next month, if not through a State Of Play presentation, then at Summer Game Fest on June 6, 2025. GTA 6 release date sparks panic as rival companies fear new delay

Rockstar's newly announced launch date for GTA 6 has led to panicked meetings at other studios, as they try to dodge its blast zone. You may have already heard, but after originally being slated for autumn 2025, Rockstar has pushed back the launch of GTA 6 to May 26, 2026. We already knew publishers were trying to avoid the game's release date, with the likes of Ghost of Yōtei and Marathon now no longer in the firing line, but the delay has reportedly caused a new wave of panic for those that were planning to launch games next year. In theory, announcing the May date, over a year in advance, should give companies plenty of time to pivot, but uncertainty around whether GTA 6 could be delayed again has led to some 'emergency meetings'. In a report on Bloomberg, the delay of GTA 6 is likened to a 'massive game of 4D chess' which is 'playing out across the entire video game industry', as business executives try to assess whether Rockstar 'will actually finish the game in time'. According to the report, various unnamed studios working on games slated for autumn 2026 are 'praying that Rockstar doesn't slip again', while others are hoping for the opposite 'so they have an excuse to delay to 2027 and score more time'. One developer on a 'big multiplayer game' previously delayed their release date from autumn 2025 to spring 2026, a decision partially made to 'get far away' from GTA 6. Now, however, it is 'caught in a vice' due to the costs of delaying the game for a second time. During its latest earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson seemed newly positive about the release window for the next Battlefield, in light of GTA 6's delay. The shooter is set to launch at some point before March 2026, at least two months clear of Rockstar's juggernaut. However, others aren't quite so scared. Publisher Devolver Digital said it is planning to launch a game on the same date as GTA 6, although given the studio's history it's unclear if it is just a stunt for internet giggles. While GTA 6 is inevitably going to suck up attention when it is released, it's unclear whether it will have detrimental impact on other games releasing around the same time. When GTA 5 came out on September 17, 2013, FIFA 14 was still released a week later, with Nintendo's The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and The Wonderful 101 on the Wii U also out within days of the game. However, Activision previously released 2018's Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 roughly a month earlier than usual to avoid Rockstar's last game, Red Dead Redemption 2. The latter went onto to become the best-selling game of that year, beating Black Ops 4, so there's good reason to avoid Rockstar's blast radius. The unprecedented success of GTA 5 (210 million copies sold, as of February this year), coupled with a less stable industry than 2013, means GTA 6 will launch in very different circumstances, when compared to its predecessor. For some within the industry, the impact of GTA 6 doesn't represent a much-needed boost in general interest, that will be good for everyone, but another 'forever' title which will suck away attention from all the other games in the years to come. It's so strange how people talk like GTA 6 is going to be the shot in the arm that the game industry needs. How does a GTA 6 release benefit any game company other than Rockstar? Trickle down theory doesn't work. I don't care if "the industry" makes $6b, I care whether a wider variety of games sell. — Brandon Sheffield (@ 2025-05-06T18:03:19.073Z In a post on Bluesky, Brandon Sheffield, director at Necrosoft Games, wrote: 'It's so strange how people talk like GTA 6 is going to be the shot in the arm that the games industry needs. More Trending 'GTA 6 releasing does the opposite of helping the industry in my view – it will become another forever game like Fortnite that draws eyes away from new releases, and becomes one of the only games the general public plays, to the exclusion of all else. Delay it forever as far as I'm concerned!' As for whether GTA 6 could be pushed back again beyond May 2026, Rockstar has often delayed its games several times before launch. In the past, it has typically launched new games in the second half of the year, but there are some exceptions to the rule, with the original Red Dead Redemption launching in May 2010 and GTA 4 in April 2008. The delays aren't unusually as long as a year though, which gives some hope that this will be the only one for GTA 6. Following the announcement of the delay, Rockstar released the second trailer for GTA 6, which features a wealth of hidden details. All signs point to GTA 6 dropping in November after strategic launch moves

Source: Rockstar Games The stars could finally be aligning for Grand Theft Auto VI. With a number of big game developers shifting their release calendars and fresh marketing arrangements becoming clearer, the buzz in the industry is intensifying over the possibility of Rockstar's next big title debuting in November 2025. Strategic maneuvering by Take-Two and Sony indicate that the runway is being cleared for GTA 6 to own the fall gaming window. GTA 6's November release appears more certain than ever GTA 6 speculation for a November release is picking up steam following a series of scheduling changes and corporate maneuvering. Most prominently, Take-Two Interactive advanced the release date of Borderlands 4 to September 12, leaving a visible gap in its fall lineup. The early September timing means the publisher sidesteps opening a big title too close to GTA 6's projected window. Also, PlayStation scheduled an exclusive State of Play for Borderlands 4 on April 30, hinting at a potential marketing alliance. Sony's record of locking up marketing deals with Rockstar for previous GTA titles fans the fire of speculation that something major is being planned. These steps indicate that both Sony and Take-Two are setting themselves up to provide GTA 6 an unimpeded run to the limelight. Major titles move aside, making room for Rockstar Joining the increasing evidence is the October 2 release day of Ghost of Yōtei, which is another AAA title. As Borderlands 4 is being moved to September and Ghost of Yōtei to early October, November's calendar has a surprisingly limited slate, frequently one of the most crowded for big-budget release months. It may be a deliberate industry wide maneuver to make sure not to conflict with the behemoth game of Rockstar. While Rockstar and Take-Two themselves are yet to make the official GTA 6 launch date confirmation, these release re-schedules and marketing news points strongly toward an active clearing of the schedule. For as gigantic an IP as Grand Theft Auto, it goes without saying that other publishers would want to keep away from its gravitational influence. Though nothing is yet formally confirmed, the elements are coming together for a November 2025 release of GTA 6. With Take-Two and Sony apparently paving the way and competing titles now shifting their release schedules, there might finally be a legitimate reason to think that the wait could finally be over later this year.
