Giants' chaotic draft-day maneuvering for Jaxson Dart trade included mystery team ‘backing out'

The Texans might not have been Joe Schoen's first choice in the Jaxson Dart trade. Behind-the-scenes footage released by the Giants from draft night shows Schoen on the phone with an unnamed general manager during the first round asking, 'Are you still good to do this?' It then cuts to Schoen telling the rest of the Giants brass that the mystery GM backed out on the deal. Advertisement 'All week he said he would do this deal and now he's backing out on us,' Schoen says. Joe Schoen's wheeling and dealing at the 2025 NFL Draft included one mystery team backing out of a supposed trade. Giants/X The ensuing series of cuts leave it deliberately unclear whether what comes next is part of the same conversation, but it's clear Schoen was stressed about how the 2025 NFL Draft might fall from there. 'Does that tip the hand, New York's now trying to move up?' he says at one point. Advertisement 'Leading up to the draft, it feels like there were rumors out there that the Giants wanted to move back up into one and just all that was going on,' Schoen said in an interview for Giants Life, the team's all-access show that released the footage. 'So, I was getting calls from every GM from pick 18 all the way back just because everybody assumed that we wanted to move up. 'Then once we get to draft day and you get into the 20s, now all of a sudden there's players there that the general managers didn't think were going to be there. So if they go from, hey, we want to move back, there's not going to be anything there we like, nah, we're not going to take your deal because we're going to take our players. Advertisement 'It can definitely become stressful from that standpoint because you thought you'd be able to get up and now all of a sudden these teams are staying and they're not willing to move back. That's when it really gets stressful, like you thought you're going to have an opportunity to make a deal for a week or so because these teams are clamoring to get out of the first round and back into 34, and then now suddenly the phone's getting hung up, nobody's making a deal, and you're on to the next team.' Finally, the footage shows Schoen taking a call from Texans GM Nick Caserio and completing the deal, in which the Giants received the 25th pick for the 34th and 99th picks along with their 2026 third-round pick. Advertisement Interestingly, Schoen was already on the phone with another GM, the Rams' Les Snead, when Caserio called. Schoen put Snead on hold while agreeing to terms with Caserio, then informed him the Giants would move up with Houston. Schoen then daps up coach Brian Daboll and gets a 'Good going' from co-owner Steve Tisch. 'When we got the 'yes' from Houston, we were all ecstatic,' Schoen said, per 'We were able to finally get our guy that we had identified late in [round] one that we'd be willing to trade up for.'

New York Giants took 'one more swing' at No. 1 overall pick on draft night

New York Giants took 'one more swing' at No. 1 overall pick on draft night New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen is always working, trying to find ways to make his team better. Two weeks ago, on the first night of the 2025 NFL draft, Schoen was holding the third overall pick in the first round but was antsy. Anything could happen. The fate of his night -- and future -- hinged on what the two teams drafting in front of him did. The Tennessee Titans had the first pick, followed by the Cleveland Browns. The consensus was that Tennessee would take Miami quarterback Cam Ward first overall and were not budging. In a recent video released by the Giants, as part of their "Giants Life" series, Schoen is seen lobbing a call into Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi with seven minutes remaining on the clock during the first selection. "Were you waiting for this?" Schoen said to Borgonzi on the phone. "I had to it. I had to it." Borgonzi told Schoen he would not be trading the pick. "Well, good luck to you, man," Schoen replied with a smile. "I thought I'd give one more swing." Schoen was exhausting all avenues once again to move up in the draft. Which player he was angling for is still unknown. Was it Ward? Or Colorado's Travis Hunter, who went second to Jacksonville after a trade with Cleveland? This is the second straight year Schoen attempted to trade up in the first round. Last year, he had the sixth overall pick and tried to get into the top three to select a quarterback but found no takers. Instead, he landed LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6. That worked out well. This year, Schoen landed Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter. That could be another great consolation prize. Schoen did make his Day 1 trade, however, when he moved back into the first round to take Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Giants took ‘one more swing' on Cam Ward with last-second NFL draft call to Titans

Joe Schoen knew what the outcome of this phone call would be. But as the general manager of a Giants team searching for a long-term answer at quarterback, he had to do his due diligence. As shown in the team's 'Giants Life: 2025 NFL Draft' show posted online Thursday, Schoen stood up from his seat to call Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi to take one last crack at moving up from No. 3 to No. 1 in an attempt to get Miami quarterback Cam Ward. 'Were you waiting for this? Are you gonna pick?' Schoen says to Borgonzi before breaking out in laughter. 'I had to do it, I had to do it. All right, man. Well, good luck to you man. I was gonna wait and just call you now on the clock, so I figured you guys were picking. But thought I'd give it one more swing.' Giants GM Joe Schoen calls Titans GM Mike Borgonzi at the start of the 2025 NFL Draft. YouTube/New York Giants Schoen then sat back down between owner John Mara and head coach Brian Daboll, telling the room, 'Tennessee's gonna pick. I think Ward's going here.' The top two went as expected for the Giants, as they anticipated Ward going to the Titans and Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter going No. 2. Schoen says in 'Giants Life' he team caught wind about a week before the draft that a team other than the Browns would be picking at No. 2; the Jaguars traded up to take the two-way star. The Giants then took Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter at No. 3 and traded up to take Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart at No. 25. The Post's Paul Schwartz reported hours before the first round of the draft that the Giants would make a last-ditch effort to trade with the Titans, but that they understood Tennessee was extremely unlikely to trade down. Shedeur Sanders, once projected as a top-three pick, fell all the way to the Browns at No. 144 in the fifth round.
