Hanekom has been phenomenal with his carries, tackling and steals at the breakdown this season. Bulls eighthman Cameron Hanekom has fuelled much of the union's success in this URC. Picture: Sydney Seshibedi/Bulls eighthman Cameron Hanekom has been awarded the United Rugby Championship's Next-Gen Player of the Season award, while seven South Africans have been included in the tournament's prestigious Elite XV. The winners were announced on Wednesday after votes from media from all five playing nations, following the regular season. Hanekom, 23, joined Stormers lock Ruben van Heerden (Tackle Machine) as the first two South Africans to receive recognition. Tom Farrell (Playmaker), Ioan Llyod (Gilbert Golden Boot), Harri Millard (OFX Top Try Scorer), and Cam Winnett (Ironman) were also awarded. Hanekom has been exceptional for the Pretoria franchise this season, particularly with his carries, tackling and steals at the breakdown. He's also added three tries to his tally in this URC. He's helped the Bulls finish second on the URC log and set up a home quarter-final first against Edinburgh, before a home semi-final against the Sharks. He has also been nominated for the URC's SA Player of the Season award. The category was open to players who were aged 23 or under at the start of the season, and had earned no more than five international caps at the beginning of the 2024/25 season. Young Springbok receives top award

Bulls forward Cameron Hanekom was officially unveiled on Wednesday as the 'Next-Gen' Player of the Season, which was voted for by members of the media across all five URC nations. He joins Ruben van Heerden (Tackle Machine), Tom Farrell (Playmaker), Ioan Llyod (Gilbert Golden Boot), Harri Millard (OFX Top Try Scorer), and Cam Winnett (Ironman) in winning individual awards for their monumental efforts this season. When it comes to the award claimed by Hanekom, a statement read: 'This category is open to players who were aged 23 or under at the start of the season, and had earned no more than five international caps at the beginning of the 2024/25 season. They must also have played at least nine games in the 2024/25 URC season. In voting for Hanekom, a member of the media said: 'Cameron Hanekom is supremely powerful in a thoroughly focused way, whether ripping the ball off the opposition or carrying it up. He has learned to be more selective at the breakdown and has a massive engine. A thrilling runner in space as well. Previous winners of his award include Munster's Jack Crowley (2023/34), Ulster's Tom Stewart (2022/23) and DHL Stormers forward, Evan Roos (2021/22). In what is effectively a 'Dream Team' for the season, Hanekom has also been named alongside several other South Africans. Elite XV 15. Jamie Osborne (Leinster Rugby) 14. Munster's Tom Farrell wins 'Playmaker' award in the URC Awards

MUNSTER'S TOM FARRELL has added his name to the history books as he has been awarded the Playmaker prize in the United Rugby Championship Awards. The Awards is a means of recognising individual achievement within a team sport, with others such as Ioan Lloyd of Scarlets winning the Gilbert Golden Boot and Harri Millard of Cardiff picking up the OFX Top Try Scorer award. With 158 points for the category, the Playmaker award is an innovation this season, but the citing awarded to Farrell reads; 'Adaptability, creativity and composure under pressure define a true playmaker. The Playmaker Award is given to the player who creates chances and tries for his team, with three key metrics used to decide the winner – try assists for his team, successfully completed offloads, and defenders beaten on the pitch. 'A player is awarded three points for each try assist, 2 points for each offload, and 1 point for each defender beaten. Advertisement 'Farrell's tally of 158 points comes from 5 try assists (15 points), 41 offloads (82 points) and 61 defenders beaten (61 points). 'He finishes ahead of DHL Stormers fullback, Warrick Gelant (118 points), and Emirates Lions star, Quan Horn (111 points).'
