Gilchrist focuses on vision for Michigan amid challenges from Trump administration
Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist at the Mackinac Policy Conference | Susan J. Demas MACKINAC ISLAND – With Independent candidate for governor and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan holding a 54% favorability rating among metro Detroit voters, and fellow Detroit resident Jocelyn Benson also seeking the Democratic nomination, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist said that his campaign would build off his record of work in all 83 Michigan counties. 'I think people from Detroit, just like people from all across Michigan, want to have a governor who is able to speak to the moment going forward. We are in an era where the economy is quickly evolving, where the support from the federal government, from [President Donald Trump's] administration, is dwindling and is causing danger for people, and I think we're going to need the kind of leadership that can speak to that forcefully. And I've demonstrated my ability to do that,' Gilchrist told the Michigan Advance at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Tuesday. Gilchrist pitched his vision of health, wealth and opportunity for the state, noting the shared anxiety of parents that their child will leave and never come home, while pointing to his own experience of growing up in Detroit, but then leaving the state for nine years to pursue a career in software engineering. With Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer unveiling the state's Growing Michigan Together Council at the 2023 conference, which later issued a report outlining strategies to help address Michigan's dwindling population and improve its economic competitiveness, Gilchrist said Michigan needs to be an answer for whatever any person's next step may be. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX He highlighted a need for affordable childcare, highlighting his work on the Caring for MI Future Program, which helped open and expand more than 3,600 child care programs in the state. For people with school age children, Gilchrist pointed to efforts to improve equity in the state's education budget, offering $10,000 in funding per student. He also noted the importance of exposure to different career paths through things like career and technical education and internships, noting how his own exposure to engineering eventually led to his career. For those looking to pursue education after high school, Gilchrist pointed to efforts to provide Michigan residents with a free or reduced-cost education at a local community college, four-year university or trade school. He also called for continued support for Michigan's higher education institutions. For those starting their career, Gilchrist highlighted his work to support entrepreneurship through the Michigan Innovation Fund. 'I think it's about making sure that whatever your next step is, you can say yes to it in the state of Michigan,' Gilchrist said. Moving from 2026 into 2030, Michigan is set to hit its first interim goal of 50% clean energy, building up to a 100% clean energy standard by 2040. However, with the federal government threatening to harm Michigan's clean energy industry by ending most tax credits, Gilchrist said he would continue to support businesses and entrepreneurs in the clean energy sector, where he can, through policy, programs and investments. However, the federal government does have a role to play, he noted. 'I am deeply concerned that members of the Michigan delegation, [U.S. Rep.] John James (R-Shelby Twp.), the Republicans, they voted for something to come out of the House that would be damaging to our clean energy future,' Gilchrist said. 'Michigan is going to need a governor going to continue to fight for that and prioritize it…That's what I'll do,' he said. The following are more excerpts from the interview: Michigan Advance: The governor has kind of sought to find common ground with President Trump. If you were to take the governorship, would you consider a different approach, or would you continue to try and find that middle ground? Gilchrist: I'm a solution builder and a problem solver, and the governor's job is to work with every and any person who can make something happen for Michigan. And so she's done that and has put points on the board as a result of it. So as governor, I will work with any and everyone to make sure that Michigan can make progress. And I recognize that when someone attacks Michigan, attacks Michigan communities, attacks Michigan universities, that it is my responsibility as the person who has the interest of the state of Michigan as my interest, have to make sure we stand up for that too, and I'll do that as governor. Michigan Advance: Is there a disconnect in the rhetoric that we saw in 2024 about Trump is this huge threat to democracy, to all of these different things, and then the rhetoric that we're seeing this year about finding common ground with him? Gilchrist: There is no disconnect from the reality that Trump has been an absolute, not just a threat, but has frankly, trampled on, is ignoring court orders, is accepting $400 [million] airplanes. I mean, like this guy thinks the Constitution is a joke. He treats it like toilet paper. I think we were, you know, right to call that out and I think that still remains true, and I'll continue to do that. At the same time. We also need to make progress in Michigan. I think you can protect our values, promote our values and make progress and that's the kind of thing that I'll do. Look, I'm an engineer. We find a way to make progress and make things work. And so that's the kind of posture I'll have. Michigan Advance contributor Andrew Roth contributed to this report.

Singapore's billiards player Peter Gilchrist wins European Open, eyes world No. 1 spot
Singapore's world No. 2 Peter Gilchrist won the European Open on May 21 after beating England's top-ranked David Causier. PHOTO: ST FILE SINGAPORE – Even at 57 and boasting a trophy collection that includes five World Billiards Championship crowns, Singapore's Peter Gilchrist is still chasing perfection. On May 21, he beat England's world No. 1 David Causier 938-618 in the European Open final for his third title of the year, but the second-ranked player insists that he is 'still a work in progress'. In a phone interview from Belgium, where the tournament was held, Gilchrist said: 'At the moment, I'm turning down the more difficult shots for an easier shot. 'There are a few shots I'm not comfortable with, and if I can get that right, I'll be tough to beat.' At The Trickshot in Bruges, Gilchrist was certainly hard to crack. After easing through the group stage, he beat 29th-ranked Phil Johnson 784-327 in the last 16, and world No. 7 Jonathan Marwood 990-418 in the quarter-finals. He then had to summon his best billiards in the semi-final to edge world No. 3 Robert Hall 630-624, before riding the momentum to overcome Causier. World No. 2 Gilchrist said: 'Rob played well in the first two hours and I was losing by about 500 points, when I managed to make an unfinished break of 320 to win. It's nice to be able to make a break when you really need it. That's when all the practice comes in. 'I also played quite solid against David. I had a good run, made a 300-plus break to go about 700 ahead, so it was all over and I could relax in the last hour. 'Any win against David is a good win because he's been playing so well and been so consistent over the year, and this will give me confidence going into the next one.' While Causier has dominated the scene and beaten Gilchrist at the World Matchplay Championship semi-final, as well as the UK Championship and Belgian Open finals, the Singaporean has three titles to his name in 2025 with the European Open, World Billiards Club 200 Open and Sydney Open. This sets him up nicely for the season-ending Australian Open from June 10 to 13, which could send him back to the top of the world rankings if he wins. Also on his calendar are the World Billiards Championship (Oct 13-16) and SEA Games (Dec 9-20) in Thailand, where the eight-gold champion is gunning for his first singles title since 2021. He said: 'This time, I was good in patches, whereas for the Club 200 Open in Manchester, I was really consistent all the way and won every game by 300 to 400 points. I'm looking to get back to that when I'm back on the practice table in Singapore for about 10 days. 'Obviously, I want to get back to world No. 1, I want to win the World Billiards Championship in October and I want to get the SEA Games gold medal back in December. It's going to be tough because there's a lot of good players, but I'm in it to win it.' Cuesports Singapore president Christopher Chuah hailed the recent performances of the local athletes in Europe, which include pool star Aloysius Yapp's UK Open victory and Nicholas Tan's last-16 finish at the World Nineball Tour major event. He said: 'Peter has once again done Singapore proud. Winning his third title of the season is a remarkable feat and testimony to his consistency and dedication to the sport at the highest level. 'This result comes in the wake of Aloysius' win at the UK Open and their achievements will no doubt spur our cuesports athletes to greater heights.' Rishabh Pant not enjoying cricket, under price and captaincy pressure: Adam Gilchrist
Legendary Australia wicketkeeper batter Adam Gilchrist feels Rishabh Pant isn't enjoying his cricket in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) and is missing the spark. Pant was sold for a whopping Rs 27 crore in the mega auction and became the most expensive player in the history of the he has failed to justify his price through his performance so far in the tournament. In the ten innings played in the season so far, Pant has scored 128 runs from ten innings at an average of 12.80 with one half-century to his name. Recently, Gilchrist shared his thoughts on Pant's poor form and said that the wicketkeeper isn't being seen at his jovial best in the ongoing him, you always feel that he enjoys his cricket. We haven't seen that this time around. Haven't seen him smiling, laughing, being jovial, being relaxed. Maybe it is the responsibility of the captaincy, coming into a new franchise with that highest price tag over his head. I don't see him being his true personality. People may see hang on there, his batting has been too carefree,' Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz. Furthermore, Gilchrist stressed that the spark seems to be missing in Pant as his usual chirping personality hasn't come through in the ongoing season.'I think there is a happy balance in his strokeplay and stroke selection. Don't see the spark in him. Just don't see that spark in him. I am just making this observation 10-11 games in. He's one of the most enjoyable and entertaining cricketers to watch when his natural colour is coming through. He is a certain personality; he has a vibrant body language. Something is missing there, something is missing,' he LSG suffered their third consecutive loss against Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 37 runs and slipped to the seventh spot with five wins from 11 matches, having ten points to their name. The Rishabh Pant-led side desperately needs to win all of their remaining matches to keep their playoffs hopes alive. Rishabh Pant is paying the price for joining LSG and the pressure of INR 27 crore: Gilchrist says ‘spark' is missing
Having been picked for INR 27 crore at the mega auction, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant was expected to set the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on fire. However, the story is turning out to be completely different as it seems the left-hander cannot buy a run at the moment. The southpaw, managed 18 runs off 17 balls against Punjab Kings as he saw his side go down by 37 runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. In the 11 matches Pant has played so far, the 27-year-old has managed just 128 runs at an average of 12.80 and a strike rate of 99.22. Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist feels that Pant is feeling the pressure of the price tag and joining a new franchise as the captain. Gilchrist also reckons that the spark is missing in Pant's game of late, and one cannot see the youngster being the jovial self for which he is known for. 'Watching him, you always feel that he enjoys his cricket. We haven't seen that this time around. Haven't seen him smiling, laughing, being jovial, being relaxed. Maybe it is the responsibility of the captaincy, coming into a new franchise with that highest price tag over his head,' Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz. 'I don't see him being his true personality. People may see hang on there, his batting has been too carefree. I think there is a happy balance in his strokeplay and stroke selection. Don't see the spark in him,' he added. In the IPL 2025 season, Rishabh Pant has gone past the half-century mark just once and it came against the Chennai Super Kings at the Ekana. However, this knock went in vain as Lucknow stumbled to a loss. Batting at No.4, Pant has failed to strike big and it is no surprise that his strike rate this season is well below the 100 mark. When Mitchell Marsh missed a fixture against Gujarat Titans, Pant came out to open the batting alongside Aiden Markram. However, this shift in batting position did not pay off. 'Just don't see that spark in him. I am just making this observation 10-11 games in. He's one of the most enjoyable and entertaining cricketers to watch when his natural colour is coming through,' said Gilchrist. 'He is a certain personality; he has a vibrant body language. Something is missing there, something is missing,' he added. With the loss against Punjab Kings, LSG are currently at the seventh spot in the points table. The franchise need to win their remaining three matches to have any chance of making it to the playoffs.
