James Morrison performs for the first time since the tragic death of his ex-partner as he prepares to tour again

performed for the first time since tragic death of his ex-partner as he returned to the stage for In It Together Festival last week. The singer, 40, was left devastated when Gill Catchpole, with whom he shares two children, was found dead in January 2024 after suffering with mental health issues. Though the pair had separated in 2023, they were still living together at their home in Gloucestershire at the time. As he prepares to tour again in September, James said it was a 'joy' to sing at the music festival in Wales. In an update shared to Instagram on Monday, the musician uploaded a photo of himself on stage. He wrote: 'What a joy it was to perform at In It Together Festival a few weeks ago. I can't wait for the tour in September.' An inquest in June 2024 said James' found his former partner hanging at her home after finding a note on the front door which read: 'Don't come in – call police.' Gill had also written farewell notes to her two children and her ex-partner before taking her own life. The 45-year-old mother had suffered from mental health issues for several years and had previously talked about taking her own life, Gloucester Coroner's Court was told. James was not present at the inquest, which was attended by Gill's parents and sister and a number of friends who wept at the back of the court as the evidence into her death was read out by the coroner. The court was told that a friend had called round to her home in the village of Whitminster, in Gloucestershire, on January 5 to collect her for work. The friend went next door to contact James – who split from his partner the year before but lived in the same house – to alert him. Coroner Roland Wooderson said that Ms Catchpole's GP had been treating her for depression and anxiety since 2012. James and Gill became engaged in 2006 and wore rings but they never married. They first met when he was 17 and she moved into his mother's home as a lodger with her boyfriend. She became a muse for James, who is famed for his love songs. James described her as his 'hero' and their romance as a 'little fairytale', with the title of album You're Stronger Than You Know inspired by her strength after the premature birth of their daughter Ada. He said: 'When she moved in, I started singing all the songs off that album to her. I was playing all of that stuff on the acoustic guitar. 'I'm not like: 'I love romance.' But I do find certain things romantic and the fact that we met each other the way we did. It's like a little fairytale or something'. Her passing was yet another tragedy for James, who until his greatest hits album in 2022 had disappeared from the music industry after losing his alcoholic father Paul in 2010 and his elder brother Alexis and nephew Callum within three years.

The star was with his partner Gill Catchpole, 45, until her tragic death last year. She was found dead at the family home in Whitminster, Gloucestershire on January 5, 2024. A source at the time said: ' Gill was found dead on Friday at the family's home in Whitminster. 'James is devastated and is being supported by his family. 'He is holding it together for their girls but has asked for the family to be left alone to grieve in private.' James, who won the Brit Award for Best British Male in 2007, shared two children with his late partner. Now, the You Give Me Something chart star is starting a fresh chapter of his life as he returns to music. After taking to the stage at a festival, he posted a picture to Instagram and wrote: "What a joy it was to perform at @inittogetherfestival a few weeks ago. "I can't wait for the tour in September." Inside James Morrison's sweet love story with late wife Gill and unusual way they met as she's found dead at their home aged 45 One fan was quick to write: "Love this so happy to see you back!!" A second put: "Beautiful song ( can't stop listening to it ) So happy to see you back xx" A third then posted: "We miss you so much! hope you are feeling better now!" Another surmised: "Lovely to see you back doing gigs, when are you coming to Bath again, I hope it's soon. x" James has also worked as a songwriter for Kelly Clarkson and Demi Lovato. LOVE STORY Speaking on the White Wine Question Time podcast, the musician previously revealed how he met his late partner Gill. James met Gill when she moved in as a lodger at his mum's house, with her then-boyfriend. The singer explained: "It wasn't the easiest start, but I just still see it as a really romantic thing. I'm not very romantic. 'I'm not like: 'I love romance!' But I do find certain things romantic and the fact that we met each other the way we did. It's like a little fairy tale or something!" James and Gill's romance blossomed around three months after the boyfriend had left, but there was another twist in the tale. James explained: "He got me back. "My mum rang me one day. And she said: 'I'm out on a date. I wonder if you can pick me up? ''I said: 'Where are you?' And she said: 'I'm at John's house.' And I was like: 'John's house? Who's John? ''She said: 'You know, Gill's John. "Okay, so I have to go and pick my mum up from my girlfriend's ex's house, and it was the most awkward thing! ''But I didn't like the fact that she said that. So I was like: 'No it's not a date. They're just hanging out.' Yeah, it was awkward!" The singer also explained that the early connection with his partner came from music - because her dad was also a musician. He said: "We just had a connection straight away really. But I had to wait two years to find out if what I thought I felt was real. "Because I wasn't going out with her for the first year or so she lived there. She was with her boyfriend, so I was getting to know her. "And I didn't want to tell her that I fell in love with her the first moment I set eyes on her because I didn't know, I never fell in love before. "So I didn't really know if it was that. So it was like a massive moment for me to even tell her that I liked her." 5 5
