Dine with the animals at Ross Park Zoo
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Dine with the animals of the Ross Park Zoo as it raises money for conservation and animal education programs. Ross Park Zoo is hosting its annual Feast for the Beasts fundraiser on Thursday, May 22. The event allows guests to support the animals as they enjoy food from seven local eateries, adult beverage samples, raffles, and live music from local band Finding Bigfoot. Executive Director Phil Ginter says the animals are more active in the evening, so the event is a neat opportunity to view them after hours. Ross Park Zoo is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Ginter says the community's unwavering support and love for the animals is what has made the zoo so successful. 'We wouldn't have made it 150 years without the tremendous outpour of support from the community, and events like Feast are a perfect example of it. Whether it's the local restaurants and caterers that are coming in and giving up their time and talents, or the countless number of individuals who are donating items for our raffle baskets. So, it's just great to see the community really rally behind the zoo in this kind of way,' said Ginter. The event will kick off the zoo's opening weekend. The zoo will open for the season the following day, May 23, with special events throughout the weekend. Admission to Feast for the Beasts will begin at 5 p.m. Tickets are $65 for nonmembers and $50 for members. Commissioners continue push for sales tax renewal
(WKBN) — Voters in Columbiana County shot down the renewal of a sales tax levy back in November, but county leaders are taking a second crack at it this May, hoping to clear up some confusion that may have led to its defeat in the fall. Words matter — whether they're included or excluded — and last November, when voters in Columbiana County stepped into the voting booth, it was what they didn't see that caused a fuss. 'This was submitted to the board of elections. The BOE doesn't write the language,' said Dave Johnson, Columbiana County Republican Chairman. 'It was submitted and it didn't say renewal last time, for whatever reason.' Voters shot down the permissive sales tax levy renewal — not an additional tax. In fact, it's a levy that has been on the books for decades in Columbiana County. 'When I went to vote and I read that on the ballot, it wasn't what we had spoken of,' said Roy Paparodis, Columbiana County Commissioner. 'We believed it was to say renewal.' But how did it miss that key piece of language on the ballot? County officials say there was miscommunication — something lost in translation — to not include it, which they ultimately attribute to its defeat. 'When they look at a ballot and they're going down through making decisions and they see any wording that might indicate this is an additional tax, it's understandable that they would vote no,' said Tim Ginter, Columbiana County Commissioner. But the levy itself, or more so the money it brings in, is critical. One penny of every dollar spent in the county helps fund a $26 million budget, making the sales tax responsible for 54%, orroughly $14 million, of that $26 million total. 'This is the funding stream that funds all of the needed, necessary items for the citizens of Columbiana County. This is for essential services,' Ginter said. Should it fail again in May, county officials say they'll be faced with some difficult decisions. 'Those steps are going to be cuts that would be very difficult for us. They'd be agonizing to us, quite frankly,' Ginter said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Business of the Week: Ross Park Zoo
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Ross Park Zoo is the Greater Binghamton Chamber Business of the Week. The zoo is committed to preserving wildlife and is home to 50 different species, half of which are in a species survival program. This year, Ross Park Zoo is celebrating its 150th anniversary. In 1875, Erastus and Cornelia Ross donated the land for Ross Park and the zoo which is the 5th oldest in the country. Executive Director Phil Ginter says the zoo has been creating cherished memories for generations. 'There are a lot of really fond memories that people share with us when we're talking with them about what it was like growing up, and it's giving us a lot to think about and to focus on as we work on a new master plan for the zoo and what we can do to capture that next generation of residents in our community and inspire them to be conservationists moving forward,' said Ginter. Ginter says the zoo is about to break gorund on the first phase of its new Nature Play Space called First Encounters located between the zoo and the Discovery Center. When it's completed, visitors will be able to enjoy exploring Park Creek, take a treehouse walk, explore a cave and climb up to an eagle's nest. There will also be three campsites for overnight programming. The zoo is hosting its annual Eggstravaganza event on April 18 and 19. Ross Park Zoo kicks off 150th Anniversary celebration
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – America's fifth oldest zoo, which happens to be in Binghamton, has a lot in store throughout the next year, to celebrate its 150th anniversary. The Ross Park Zoo kicked off its 150th anniversary yesterday with its annual meeting at the Double Tree in Binghamton, and the theme was 'charting a new path forward.' Since Ross Park is a member-based organization, zoo members get to elect six people to the board of directors. The executive director, Phil Ginter, says the meeting is an opportunity to share some of the changes coming to the zoo this year. Including its new $300,000, creek side play and learning center, which is expected to break ground in early Spring. 'We're looking forward to engaging with the community and kind of getting a sense of what people would like to see happen with the zoo moving forward so that we can incorporate community ideas into our new master plan. So, stay tuned for opportunities for the community to work with us and share their ideas about what the next 150 years of Ross Park Zoo will look like,' said Ginter. Ginter says they've been meeting with engineers to create the zoo's new master plan, which will be unveiled by the end of July. He reminds the public that the zoo is open all year round, and if anything, the animals are more active and comfortable in the cooler temperatures.
