Furious Spice Girls row erupts as Geri accused of 'rubbishing band's legacy'

Geri Halliwell Horner's comments that the term 'Girl Power' is 'irrelevant' has angered some members of the Spice Girls, it has been reported Geri Halliwell Horner has left some of her Spice Girls bandmembers "horrified" after suggesting their iconic 'Girl Power' slogan is "irrelevant", it has been reported. The slogan was popularised in the mainstream by the British girl group and celebrates female empowerment. Prior to their fame, the Spice Girls were told repeatedly that they wouldn't be able to get on magazine front covers because "women don't sell" and that they grew increasingly frustrated by the misogyny in the industry. ‌ As they became the most famous girl group in the world, the Spice Girls embodied that motto with all they had and became feminist icons. Ginger Spice was no quieter than her bandmates as she declared she wanted to give "feminism a kick up the a***". ‌ However, her recent comments about "Girl Power" have left a sour taste as she appeared at the launch of her children's book. She said last month: "Girl Power was a sweet word for feminism. But if you look in the dictionary and see what feminism means, it means the 'equalisation between the sexes'. "Therefore, to me it's irrelevant what your gender is: I want everyone to feel their power. So let's evolve that word from 'Girl Power' to 'Inner Power'." A source reportedly close to some members of the band told Mail+: "The others, Victoria included, are so proud of shouting loudly about gender equality and the influence they had on society. "Does she think it is OK to rubbish the legacy of the Spice Girls, a band that five very strong women were proudly part of and which helped drive a lot of change, during a talk to promote her own career as a book author?" They continued to point out that a huge part of the band was being able to tell their fan girls that they could do things just as well, or even better, than boys. The source added that now is a time when girl identity is under threat and "she thinks it's OK to write Girl Power off in such a public way". ‌ While another source told the publication that Geri might not want to be part of the Spice Girls anymore, but suggested that she not "ruin it for the rest of those who do". Geri has undergone a major rebrand since her wild union jack dress-wearing days. The 52-year-old met husband Christian Horner in 2014, wedding him just a year later. She is mum to 18-year-old Bluebell, who she shares with her ex Sacha Gervasi, and her son Montague, eight, with Christian. ‌ The couple now reside in their lavish £7million Cotswolds estate, with Geri often sharing posts about her books, animals or while she's at events in her white and ivory wardrobe. It comes after Geri failed to turn up to Mel B's 50th birthday in Leeds last week. Victoria Beckham was also unable to attend, leaving Mel B to celebrate with Emma Bunton and Mel C. Another source claimed that Geri is not keen to be part of the reunion tour, adding: "She doesn't really want to be Ginger Spice again, there was a time and a place for that. Today she's more of a lady of the manor type." The Mirror has reached out to Geri and reps for the Spice Girls for comment.

Geri Halliwell declares end of ‘girl power', calls for gender-inclusion as Spice Girls eye reunion

It's the slogan that inspired a generation, but Geri Halliwell Horner has announced that 'Girl Power' is no longer relevant, proposing the term 'Inner Power' in the spirit of gender inclusion. Speaking to young people at her latest children's book launch, Geri, 52, said: 'Girl Power was a sweet word for feminism. But if you look in the dictionary and see what feminism means, it means the 'equalisation between the sexes'. Therefore, to me it's irrelevant what your gender is, I want everyone to feel their power, so let's evolve that word from Girl Power to Inner Power.' The former Spice Girl, who coined the phrase that became as iconic as her Union Jack dress, reflected on the group's 30-year legacy and her original aim to 'give feminism a kick up the arse.' Mel C, 51, described Girl Power as 'being able to do things just as well as – or even better than – the boys, and be what we want to be. It's about spreading a positive vibe and kicking it for the girls. It's not about picking up guys, we don't need men to control our lives, we control our lives anyway.' While millions of fans may be disappointed, Geri insists the message should be about celebrating everyone: 'It's meant to be inclusive and celebratory of who you are and what I feel like is important as well is that none of us are perfect, we're all idiots at different times, we are.' Geri, Emma Bunton, Mel B, and Mel C are reportedly planning a 30th anniversary reunion tour, though Victoria Beckham is not expected to join. Meanwhile, Geri's personal life has also made headlines, from her husband Christian Horner's public controversies to the recent news that he has formally adopted her daughter Bluebell, 18. Despite the challenges, Geri and Christian remain together, and Geri continues to support her family and career, recently appearing with Christian at the Miami F1 Grand Prix and celebrating her daughter's academic achievements.

Girl Power is no more! Geri Horner goes gender-neutral and declares an end to the Spice Girls slogan

It is a slogan of female empowerment made famous by the Spice Girls and shouted with pride by women everywhere for more than three decades. But now, former band member Geri Halliwell Horner has declared 'Girl Power' defunct and said, in the interest of gender inclusion, it should be 'Inner Power'. Speaking to an audience of young people at the launch of her latest children's book last month, the 52-year-old said: 'Girl Power was a sweet word for feminism. 'But if you look in the dictionary and see what feminism means, it means the 'equalisation between the sexes'. 'Therefore, to me it's irrelevant what your gender is, I want everyone to feel their power, so let's evolve that word from Girl Power to Inner Power.' It has been 30 years since the Spice Girls, the UK's most popular girl band, were formed and it was Geri that came up with the name as she spoke famously about wanting to give 'feminism a kick up the arse'. Mel C, 51, described Girl Power as 'being able to do things just as well as - or even better than - the boys, and be what we want to be. It's about spreading a positive vibe and kicking it for the girls. 'It's not about picking up guys, we don't need men to control our lives, we control our lives anyway.' But much to the disappointment, no doubt of the millions of girls who grew up listening to the pop band, Geri, formerly known as Ginger Spice, has said Girl Power should no longer be about women. The mother-of-three added: 'It's meant to be inclusive and celebratory of who you are and what I feel like is important as well is that none of us are perfect, we're all idiots at different times, we are.' Geri, Emma Bunton, Mel B and Mel C are reportedly set to reunite for their 30th anniversary and have been secretly planning a world tour, though Victoria Beckham will not join them. It is believed that music mogul Simon, 64, has been in talks with the group to get back together with the hope of helping foot the huge bills of his split from his wife Natalie Swinston, according to The Sun. It comes after Geri's last year was plagued with scandal when her husband, the Formula One boss Christian Horner, was accused of sending inappropriate messages to his female employee, though he was found to have no case to answer. Despite Geri's the public 'sexting' row, the pair, who were married in 2015 after less than a year of dating, remain in their relationship. She revealed that Christian has adopted her daughter Bluebell, which had previously not been reported on. Geri welcomed her oldest child Bluebell, 18, during a short-lived relationship with Sacha Gervasi, a journalist turned screenwriter and director. The teenager is currently studying English literature and Geri gushed she is a 'brilliant writer' who she sometimes 'runs thing past' when she writes her own books. Asked whether Bluebell gets her writing skills from her dad, Geri explained that Christian has officially adopted her daughter. She said: 'Her biological father, yes. Christian formally adopted her. It's public knowledge.' Christian and Geri also share a son and Christian's daughter from his previous relationship with Beverley Allen, a former pub landlady.

Longmont community rallies for equality on International Women's Day

Longmont community members gathered downtown to rally for a more equitable society on this year's International Women's Day. On Saturday, a large crowd of people met at Sixth Avenue and Main Street in Longmont for the demonstration. The crowd filled both sides of Main Street, with some protesters occupying the median. (Dana Cadey/Staff writer) Over 250 people had registered for the protest on the event website by Saturday afternoon. Rally coordinator Lyn Lowry hosted a few International Women's Day protests in Longmont before the Covid-19 pandemic, but she said she was surprised to see so many people attend Saturday's rally. 'We need community — we need to support women,' Lowry said. 'We need to do something about misogyny and cruelty, and it's all over the world.' International Women's Day is observed annually on March 8. The day celebrates the accomplishments of women while calling for greater gender equality around the world. While most of the protesters were women, many men joined the Longmont rally as well. Erie resident Paul Crosson expressed his support for women's rights and abortion access. Crosson said it was 'hopeful' to see so many people rallying on Saturday. 'It's educational, and people need to do something with their emotions,' Crosson said. (Dana Cadey/Staff writer) Many signs displayed messages advocating for female empowerment, including 'Girl Power' and 'Hear Us Roar.' Others focused on separate political topics, such as climate change and fascism. 'It makes me tear up because I think we all feel the same way,' Longmont resident Lynette McClain said. 'It's a lot more than just a women's march.' McClain said she wants the rally to inspire people to be active in political discourse. 'We want to get people involved, and to stand up,' McClain said. 'We need everybody to stand up.' Paula Dyer, another protester from Longmont, spent the week attending other regional rallies, including one at the state Capitol building in Denver on Tuesday. 'My heart is breaking,' Dyer said. 'I'm 78 years old. I never, ever thought this would be our country. And I can't stay away. I have to be here.' She said it was 'so exciting' to see the big turnout at the Longmont rally. 'Longmont cares, and we're proving it today,' Dyer said.
