LGL: Millcreek Education Foundation

Students in the Millcreek School District will benefit from this week's JET24/FOX 66 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express Resale Center. Owner Joe Askins presented the Millcreek Education Foundation with a check for $250. The Millcreek Education Foundation is one of the oldest in the country having started in 1982. 'We're here for Millcreek school district students to provide essential student needs. And that can include personal items as well as items they need to just to be a student,' Executive Director Kristina Huber MA, CFRE, said. Huber said the foundation is likely best known for the scholarships that it awards students every year. 'Last year we gave almost $70,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors. Not only for college, but for trade schools,' she said. 'We also have scholarships for items you may need when going into a career or technical. We have an architect scholarship, and we also have art scholarships for art supplies that can be very costly.' To support the work of the foundation, they hold events, like the MEF craft show each year, a golf tournament, and a pop luck fundraiser. Partners in the community, corporations, education tax credits, and random donations like this week's Loving Giving Local check from Auto Express help support the work of the foundation. 'For us to be able to deliver Loving Giving Local to the Millcreek Education Foundation and to learn today that the donation we bring is going to go towards their Student-in-Need program, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about. And this foundation has been doing it since 1983,' Askins said. Loving Giving Local: MYAA

Local athletes are going to benefit from this week's Loving Giving Local donation. Selected at random was the Millcreek Youth Athletic Association, which has served the Erie region for 71 years. Known best for its longtime baseball and softball programs, MYAA also offers competition to young people in lacrosse, swimming, wrestling, basketball, football, cross country, even cheering and adaptive sports, based in Millcreek, MYAA is open to young athletes from anywhere in the region, according to Trish DiSanti-Boehm, Baseball Major Commissioner. 'We have kids from all around the area participating in our programs. Fairview North East, Iroquois, Erie, anyone in the area that wants to drive here and play on our fields and participate with our facilities, we welcome them,' said DiSanti-Boehm. Disanti-Boehn said MYAA isn't just for the sports stars of tomorrow, but rather for any young person who loves to play the game. 'We have programs for kids just learning the game as well. Every kind of spectra of athletic ability is represented in the MYAA program and I love that because you're going to have kids that go on to play travel ball, they're going to play in high school. But you have kids that come back every single summer, every single fall for basketball and they're going to play because they love the game.' Thousands of kids participate in MYAA sports yearly. The all-volunteer organization maintains more than a dozen sports facilities around the township. So, donations like Loving Giving Local help. 'Any kind of sponsorship, any kind of award like the one we got today, it goes right back into our facilities so our kids can keep playing,' DiSanti-Boehm said. Even though the Loving Giving Local weekly non-profit is selected at random, MYAA and baseball are near and dear to Joe Askins heart. 'I grew up playing MYAA baseball, so for me to be able to bring loving giving local to MYAA and give them a donation, I know all they do for the community and that money is going to go right to the ballfields. That's what Loving Giving Local is all about. It's all about giving back to the community and MYAA has been doing it for over 70 years,' said Askins. Loving Giving Local: Goodell Gardens and Homestead

Thanks to the generosity of two sisters from Edinboro, you can learn about nature and gardening at a very special place. In the midst of a long winter nap, Goodell Gardens and Homestead got a visit from Loving Giving Local. These are summertime images of Goodell Gardens and Homestead in full bloom. This 80-acre public garden and arboretum in Edinboro has been open to the public for the past 20 years, from May through October. 'We are located right in downtown Edinboro right on Route 6N, and we offer classes and concerts tours of the gardens, hikes on the trails and we really just try to provide a great place for the community to learn about gardening and nature, and also offer cultural programs like concerts and festivals as well,' said Amber Wellington, executive director of Goodell Gardens. Pioneer farmer and blacksmith Layton Goodell moved to Edinboro in the 1830s. This was his property. And four generations later, thanks to Carrie and Margaret Goodell, the entire communjity can now enjoy this property. They never got married or had any children so they left their estate to become a place where you can learn about gardening and nature. The main portion of the garden is on about 12 acres. Recently, another 36 acres were planted into native grasses and wildflowers. The property is also home to the edinboro music festival and other concerts each year. Wellington said they welcome this weeks Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express. 'So $250 can help off set the costs of one of our summer concert series. Or it could plant two trees. So we're really excited at looking at different option on how to use those amazing funds,' Wellington went on to say. 'Whatever they choose to do we know that the funds are going to go to great use right here at Goodell Gardens,' said Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center. Goodells Gardens is enduring winter like the rest of us now, ready to burst into color this spring when the space opens to the public again May 1. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
