Egypt condemns Iranian strike on Qatar, voices concern of wider regional conflict - Foreign Affairs
Egypt has condemned Iran's missile strike on a US military base in Qatar, warning that the attack marks a dangerous escalation in an already volatile regional landscape. The strike, launched late Monday and claimed by Tehran as part of Operation Bisharat Al-Fath (Glad Tidings of Victory), targeted Al-Udeid Air Base—home to US Central Command and a rotating British military presence. It came in response to coordinated US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities on Sunday, which themselves followed Iran's earlier attacks on Israel. Explosions were reported over Doha, though Qatar's Ministry of Defence said its air defenses intercepted the missiles and that no casualties were recorded. In a statement on Monday, Egypt's Foreign Ministry said the attack violated Qatari sovereignty and international law and expressed 'full solidarity' with Qatar. It called for an immediate ceasefire and urged 'immediate preserve regional peace and security.' Cairo also voiced concern about the speed and scale of the military escalation and called for intensified diplomatic engagement - citing dialogue as the only viable road to peace - to prevent the region from descending into deeper conflict and instability. The airstrike on Qatar was part of a wider Iranian retaliation, which also included missile launches toward US positions in Iraq. The developments have rattled several Gulf states, with Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates temporarily closing their airspace. Bahrain also suspended all air traffic and issued shelter-in-place warnings, including emergency sirens in parts of Manama. Flight disruptions spread Monday evening, with EgyptAir suspending all flights between Cairo and cities in the Gulf. The national carrier said the suspension would remain in effect 'until the situation stabilizes.' The incident marks a dramatic turn in the regional conflict that began on 13 June with Israeli strikes on Iran. US involvement expanded over the weekend with the bombing of Iran's nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—strikes that Washington framed as support for its ally amid the deepening confrontation with Tehran.
