Tami Sawyer hires civil rights attorney Ben Crump after being detained by MPD
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer has hired well-known civil rights attorney Ben Crump after being detained by Memphis police during a disturbance Tuesday at the Crosstown Concourse. Video from inside Global Cafe sparked melee at Crosstown Tuesday, police were called to the Global Cafe after a woman in the restaurant went live on Facebook and said she was being denied service and was being asked to leave. A number of people who saw the post showed up, and when officers arrived on the scene, a large fight broke out. Four people, including Sawyer, were detained. Sawyer was later released. One officer was injured and taken to the Regional One Medical Center in non-critical condition. Suspects accused of assaulting officers at Crosstown appear in court On her Instagram page Thursday, she issued the following statement: 'At this time, I have no comment on the actions of the Memphis Police Department against me and several others outside Crosstown Concourse. I am focused on healing from my injuries and have retained Attorney Ben Crump as legal counsel. In the meantime, I remain committed to serving the people of Shelby County and will continue executing my duties as General Sessions Court Clerk with the same dedication I have shown since my first day in office. I appreciate the support I have received and will provide further updates as appropriate.' Ben Crump has been involved in several high-profile civil rights cases across the country. He is currently representing the family members of Tyre Nichols in a $550 million civil lawsuit against the city of Memphis in the death of Nichols. The case is set to go to trial in July of 2026. Man just arrested after pointing a gun at a woman last July
MEMPHIS, Tenn — A man was arrested Wednesday after pointing a gun at a woman after being involved in a car accident last July. Ronald Evans, 58, was involved in a two-vehicle crash on July 4 of last year. According to the witness, she tried to acquire the insurance status of Evans to which he went back to his 2005 Ford Escape. Video from inside Global Cafe sparked melee at Crosstown Reports say as she approached his vehicle, he pointed his black handgun at the victim. She stepped away from the vehicle and drove away northbound Ridgeway. On July 5, MPD obtained Evans' vehicle information and identified him as a possible suspect. Police conducted a six-person photo lineup and the victim identified Evans as the responsible party. She advised that she wishes to prosecute in this matter.
