Aurora celebrates Asia Pacific cultures in preview to Global Fest

Aurora prides itself on being Colorado's most diverse city. On Wednesday, May 21, the city hosted a celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander month for its employees. There was dancing, food and drink during the lunch hour at the Aurora Municipal Center on the beautiful spring afternoon. CBS Aurora is getting ready to host its signature event in June - Global Fest. Wednesday's event featured some of the same performers and food vendors who will take part in the city's main event recognizing being "The World in a City." "We're just highlighting some of the great organizations here in Aurora and some of the many cultural groups that bring so much flavor to the city. So we'll have a Tai Chi demonstration and Polynesian dance and then we have an Iranian dance group as well today," said Aurora spokesperson Joe Rubino. CBS Immigrants in Aurora speak more than 160 languages. And every year the city celebrates with a Parade of Nations, international fashion show, performers and global cuisine. CBS CBS Colorado is excited to be a sponsor of Aurora's Global Fest. Your Aurora reporters will be there. Global Fest is Saturday June 14 from 11am to 6pm at the Aurora Municipal Center's Great Lawn. The community can still vote to select Aurora's best globally inspired dish, drink or dessert in the city's second Global Flavors competition. With a new deadline of Saturday May 31, the public is invited to visit participating food vendors in Aurora and vote on their favorite. The top three vote-getters will be recognized at Global Fest.

Sur la Table's Kids & Teens Summer Series is the ultimate passport to the kitchen with hands-on instruction. Catering to a diverse range of abilities and palates, these lessons are immersive and engaging. Choose from a variety of courses, each up to five consecutive days long, which take place during May—August. You can be sure that your kid will gain useful skills in a positive environment, with direct instruction from amiable professional chefs with teaching experience. "My son just finished his 4th Summer Series with Sur La Table and loved it once again,' says parent, Erica M. 'Over the years, he's learned so much from these chefs! From their exploration of different cuisines to their patience and guidance, we're so thankful for the heart and expertise they put into their teaching." Last year, in 2024, the Kids & Teens Summer Series had over 20,000 participants at 55 different locations, according to a press release. Over 100 recipes were taught by professional chefs and educators in small class sizes, expanding the types of foods that kids had previously been exposed to. From inspiring healthy eating habits to improving math skills, these classes made a lasting impact on students and their families. Weekly classes that inspire kids to taste flavors from around the world include dynamic programs like Global Flavors, Taste the World, Sweet & Savory Baking, and Ambitious Recipes. Small group class sizes ensure that your kids will be able to do their best in a helpful and entertaining environment. During each session, kids and teens will learn about kitchen safety, food preparation, recipe development, and more. "Our daughter had a blast in the Teens Baking Summer Series program at Sur La Table,' says parent, Jeanine S. 'We've loved seeing the way her confidence in cooking has transformed!" Ideal for fastidious eaters, these classes do more than just teach children the basics. Expert instruction in a specialized group setting also encourages young ones to try new flavors, pushing their creativity, ambition, and ingenuity to the forefront. Global Flavors competition is back to celebrate Aurora's international cuisine

Aurora will champion its global influences with the launch of Global Flavors: a recognition of its hundreds of specialty restaurants, markets and food trucks. The food competition is now in its second year. The city's signature event Global Fest has moved to earlier in the summer - it takes place this year on Saturday June 14, 2025 from 11AM to 6PM on the Aurora Municipal Center's Great Lawn, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway. Food providers in Aurora are invited to nominate a globally inspired dish, drink or dessert by March 30th and beginning in May the public will be invited to visit and taste the nominated items, then cast their votes. "As an extension of Global Fest, Global Flavors is a creative initiative that seeks to actively support and involve the local business community in this global celebration, showcase the diversity of food across Aurora, and unite people through food," said Ricardo Gambetta, manager of the Office of International and Immigrant Affairs. To participate in the competition, businesses must be based in Aurora and licensed to sell food, plus be in good standing with regulatory agencies.
