Brazil's Haddad backs research on oil reserves near mouth of the Amazon
SAO PAULO, May 18 (Reuters) - Research in Brazil for possible oil reserves near the mouth of the Amazon river has to go ahead but any discoveries should not delay the country's transition to cleaner energy, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has said. In the quest for new oil discoveries, the mouth of the Amazon is considered the area with the greatest potential in Brazil's Equatorial Margin - a vast region stretching between the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Amapa. "I am in favor of research, I think we have to do it, we have to check what is there. However, the oil that may be there cannot be an excuse for us to delay our (energy) transition," Haddad said in a television interview with local media outlet GloboNews on Saturday. Due to the site's location in the Amazon basin, potential drilling for oil is highly controversial. Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva - known as Lula - defends the exploration efforts. However, other elements in the government are concerned that opening new hydrocarbon projects in environmentally sensitive regions flies in the face of a global quest for cleaner energy options. Haddad called for reducing Brazil's dependence on oil, arguing this would be possible with greater investment in other energy sources. "Brazil has been leading this process for decades," he said.

Lady Gaga 'bomb plot uncovered' as Brazilian police arrest man and teen
Police say Molotov cocktails and explosives were allegedly planned for use at the Copacabana Beach show, attended by over two million fans. A man and a teenager have reportedly been arrested in Brazil over a terrifying alleged plot to bomb a Lady Gaga concert attended by more than two million fans. Police say Molotov cocktails and improvised explosive devices were to be used during the singer's record-breaking performance at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday — the biggest gig of her career. Officers in Rio foiled the potential attack as part of an investigation dubbed 'Operation Fake Monster', according to Brazilian broadcaster GloboNews. A total of nine properties across Rio and São Paulo were raided, uncovering electronic equipment and materials that raised suspicion. The adult suspect, described by police as the group's ringleader, was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm, while the teenage suspect was detained for possession of child abuse images, reports the Mirror. The arrests were linked to a wider police operation targeting an online extremist group accused of spreading hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community, teenagers and children. Authorities say the group promoted radicalisation, shared violent content, and encouraged hate crimes and self-harm, while also attempting to recruit teens to assist with attacks. Had the alleged plot gone ahead, the consequences could have been catastrophic due to the size of the crowd. The massive beachside gig was funded by the city of Rio to boost tourism and the economy. It marked Lady Gaga's first appearance in Brazil since 2012. She previously cancelled a 2017 tour stop due to health issues. The crowd reportedly surpassed Madonna's 1.6 million-strong audience at the same location in January, making it the largest concert ever held in Rio. Lady Gaga, 39, has not yet commented on the reported threat and has not shared any footage from the event on social media.

2 killed in Brazil small plane crash
SAO PAULO, Feb 16, (Xinhua): Two people were killed Saturday when a small plane crashed into a sugarcane field in a rural town in Brazil's southeastern Sao Paulo state, the local fire department said. The aircraft crashed in the town of Quadrahad after taking off from a nearby airfield, killing the two people onboard. According to witnesses cited by a fire department spokesperson, the plane attempted an emergency landing but exploded upon hitting the sugarcane plantation. The crash follows a Feb 7 incident, when a private jet crashed on a busy avenue in Sao Paulo, colliding with passenger buses and killing both people onboard. So far in 2025, Brazil has recorded 12 deaths in seven aviation accidents, according to reports from GloboNews, a Brazilian TV channel.
