Big Brothers Big Sisters Tampa wants to recruit 60 mentors in 60 days
National Volunteer Month campaign aims to inspire Tampa Bay residents to step up and change lives
TAMPA, Fla. (BLOOM) — While the NFL prepares to draft its next class of future stars, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is focused on scouting something just as powerful: local mentors ready to make a difference.
In honor of National Volunteer Month this April, the nonprofit has launched the Big Draft, a high-impact, NFL-partnered campaign aimed at recruiting 60 new 'Bigs' in 60 days—all before the 2025 NFL Draft kicks off on April 24.
'Mentorship is game-changing,' said Chris Letsos, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Tampa Bay. 'Just like in football, kids need a strong team behind them. Our Bigs provide the support, encouragement, and opportunities to help a young person succeed. We're challenging our community to step up.'
There are hundreds of kids across the Tampa Bay area waiting for someone to be in their corner—a mentor who will cheer them on, offer guidance, and help them believe in themselves. With an increasing need for volunteers, the Big Draft is a call to action for everyday people to change a child's life with just a few hours each month.
According to a recent study conducted by researchers at Harvard and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America:
Littles (mentees) are 20% more likely to enroll in post-secondary education
They go on to earn 15% more over their lifetime
Mentorship closes two-thirds of the economic gap for youth facing adversity
Volunteers—called 'Bigs'—don't need special qualifications. All it takes is consistency, kindness, and about four hours a month. Whether it's sharing a hobby, grabbing lunch, or just being there to talk, the impact can be life-changing.
This campaign is part of a national initiative supported by NFL Inspire Change, designed to spotlight volunteerism and amplify community involvement.
